I have been working at DuPont full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Dupont is a big company so there is what seems to be a certain level of job security. The benefits and pay are decent.

    Cons

Despite being a large company if you don't work in the heart of dupont in Wilmington Delaware things are hardly secure. DuPont is an east coast company that doesn't seem to take west coast facilities into consideration when making decisions regarding benefits and policies. Working for a business recently acquired by DuPont I have seen the culture that made working at our site attractive melt away as DuPont policies and mind sets have taken over. DuPont emphasizes respect for people at a high level but in reality the follow through is just not there. DuPont is nothing special when it comes to taking care of their employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

An ever increasing workload for the same pay and paltry annual increases is not how you show respect for people. Keeping temps/contractors on staff for years with no attempt to hire them full time is not showing respect for people. Step up and take care of your people for real.

I worked at DuPont full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, flexible schedule, low standards

    Cons

Company is pretty content with the status quo. Don't push for change or new ideas. Employees who follow the rules and don't do anything wrong are celebrated, while those who challenge the existing way of thought and try to innovate are not valued.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Raise your standards for hiring new employees. 2. Put those employees in roles that are best suited to their strengths. 3. Give those employees the freedom to be creative problem solvers within the scope of their role. 4. Sit back and reap the rewards.

Hard to break in to the culture - people and work - since there were so many 25+ year employees.

I worked at DuPont full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Smart scientists.
Tries hard to be global but every region and every business unit thinks they are unique.
    Six Sigma has been institutionalized.

    Cons

Work experience from outside the company is not valued.
Opportunities happen by knowing someone from having worked with them in the past. Very hard for experienced new hires to be known for upcoming opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You know there has to be a problem when over 80% of the experienced new hires leave within 2 years. This is 'accepted' and there is no interest in trying to understand or change this. How do you get new ideas into the company?

    Pros

    Good place to get experience

    Cons

Autocratic un-educated micro managing little man syndrome. Will be a nobody to anybody when he retires

I have been working at DuPont full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Able to build up a career network

    Cons

As an engineer, work not challenging; work with too many people that are not innovative & creative; big disconnect in what the company says and what it actually does

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hard to advise on this since it is striking how leaders and managers do nothing to change the culture and help those who are talented and driven. Status quo seems to be the way to go.

    I worked at DuPont full-time

    Pros

The employees are empathetic and innovative, the work is fulfilling, and the site offers a fitness center as well as a subsidized lunch every day. The change in ownership put a heavy emphasis on safety.

    Cons

This same emphasis on safety could easily take more time than one would expect - it led to one rushing to complete the required jobs, which obviously doesn't aid in improving safety. Management lacks the one mantra that came with the change of ownership from Danisco to DuPont - respect for people. Continued implied threats of job loss do not encourage a workforce to work smarter or safer. Little transparency between managers and staff - no 360 degree reviews were performed during my time there.

I have been working at DuPont full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The company has been around for over 200 years and a lot of people in the business community recognize the name and the brand "DuPont"

    Cons

Not a lot of mobility for younger or middle age workforce. The company talks about being new and different and listening to their employees but the same managers with the same mindset are promoted

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at DuPont

    Pros

Able to work at home office if needed. Benefits and compensation are in the mid-range of other companies.

    Cons

Many individuals have been with the company most if not their entire lives. For individuals who are new or with a few years experience, it is very difficult to work here. New thoughts are not welcomed. Little to no career advancement or support to get it. I have known many individuals with talent and drive who have left. I am not far behind.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assess management's ability to attract and retain talent. Fix the cultural and structural flaws.

I have been working at DuPont

    Pros

Does not demand very many hours per week if not in management. Many research projects are intellectually stimulating. Many great colleagues.

    Cons

Uncompetitive pay and benefits. Uncompetitive compared with more agile and focused competitors. VERY slow to execute. Can be stifling environment for true innovators and entrepreneurial types.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a commitment to be the best again. Go back to the culture of the heyday years. Let the scientists run wild. Put them at the center. Be more like Google or Amyris.
