I respectable place to launch a career in finance

Valuation Analyst (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Duff & Phelps full-time for less than a year

ProsSupportive coworkers always take time out of their day to help you. The training program is also very helpful to new analysts

ConsMonotonous, boring work. The firm lacks the fast paced environment that other financial service firms have to offer.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

A decent place to work, although it depends highly on the city and group in which you work.

ProsPay is better than at the Big 4, especially since higher level employees receive stock options and restricted stock.

ConsPublic company issues are prevalent. Also, a large portion of the firm is valuation, which is more of a commodity than some other value-added services.

Career Advancement

Vice President (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Duff & Phelps

ProsDuff and Phelps is a great place to develop a strong skill set which can be leveraged as an asset towards career advancement.

ConsBecause the services provided at Duff and Phelps are more ancillary and audit like the fees that the company charge are not that great, in turn the salaries are capped at a lower level than deserved.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease the work life balance of the employees or increase the salaries. The company should not have gone public because now there is too much of an emphasis on the profit margin rather than the employees.

Has its challenges but overall a good work experience.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I have been working at Duff & Phelps

ProsGreat client base. Many opportunities to learn and stretch for greater responsibility. Collegial environment in most cases. Generally personable and grounded co-workers.

ConsUnder-developed performance review culture. At times little cooperation at senior levels of management due to individual interests. Hours can at times be long. Bonus compensation often viewed as average or below average. Culture across cities can often by very different. Public company status can result in management overly focusing on short-term results.

Advice to Senior ManagementResist the urge to focus on short-term results and focus on most effective ways to increase shareholder value in the long term. Closely scrutinize and review compensation practices.

Senior Associate (Current Employee)
Norwell, MA

I have been working at Duff & Phelps

Pros1. Friendly and cooperative working environment;
2. Flexible schedule - as long as you get things done;
3. Great opportunity to work with talented people;
4. Managers respect thier subordinates in genenral;

Cons1. Not sure if the comps are competitive enough;
2. Performance review is only from the top, not a 360 degree review;
3. Utilization is king;
4. Less focus on employee development;

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you really treat employees as the key asset/foundation of the company, you should place more focus on employee fullfillment. Still a long way to go!

Good place to work. Work with a lot of big name clients

Valuation Analyst (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Duff & Phelps

ProsStart doing value added work from your first day on the job. Office environment is not overly formal. Management willing to help you learn.

ConsOnce you have been working for six months to a year, the projects are routine with little variation. After a few years the work can get repetitive.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to put in place a continuing education program for analysts and seniors to work on during down time.

Decent Place All-In-All

Senior Associate (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Duff & Phelps

ProsGood Work / Life Balance - compensation is weak but hours less intense than larger banks.

ConsLack of Challenge - constant valuation assignments can get extremely mundane.
Not a Meritocracy - promotions and awards are often given based on length of service rather than quality of work or revenue generation.

Good Place to Work

Senior Associate (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Duff & Phelps

ProsDuff has a much more relaxed work environment than many other middle market and bulge bracket investment banks. There is no face time requirement at the company. If work is completely on time and in an efficient and high quality manner, there is no expectation that people will stay until the most senior person leaves the office.

ConsThe company has limited name recognition which may be a detriment to resumes. Many people associate Duff with accounting related services and do not realize that investment banking is even a service we offer. Additionally, compensation could be more in line with other middle market investment banks in order to recruit the best talent possible.

Advice to Senior ManagementSegregate the investment banking group from the rest of the business
