My anonymous review of Duke Energy

Manager (Current Employee)
Charlotte, NC

I have been working at Duke Energy full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat people, marketable pay, training and professional development, pays up to $25K towards PHD.

ConsManagement often does not take the time to actually "manage" and develop staff. Positive reinforcement can go a long way.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake time to develop staff, provide cross training opportunities, take a direct approach to ee issues

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Honest, caring company that believes in growth from within, and promotes curiosity

Project Engineer (Former Employee)
Charlotte, NC

I worked at Duke Energy full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat teamwork environment
Focuses heavily on safety of employees and others
Good mentoring program
Opportunity to grow within the company

ConsLower pay than most mechanical engineering jobs
More project management than engineering
Project distribution is usually aligned with age or years with the company instead of ability

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage growth by allowing employees to experience different departments. Be more up front with future of power plants and employee future in general

Quality internship experience

Intern (Former Employee)
Charlotte, NC

I worked at Duke Energy as an intern for less than a year

ProsInternship often provide unique leadership opportunities...chances to take on projects you find

interesting, shadow other groups that you're curious about

Great benefits, even for interns

Great internship community, lots of outings together and group-building activities

Really an industry leader, working for a prestigious company

ConsCompany is currently undergoing some shuffling after merger so it's been hectic from what I can tell

very difficult to convert an internship into a full-time position. I've been trying to reach out to representatives there in hopes of coming back after graduation but have yet to receive any response

College Co-Op

Co-Op (Current Employee)
Terre Haute, IN

I have been working at Duke Energy as an intern for more than a year

Pros-Everyone is very friendly and willing to help you learn
-Great insight for the energy industry
-Typically not a very stressful environment to work in
- Upper Management (Plant Manager) was extremely approachable

Cons-My days at Duke oftentimes felt boring and as an intern I felt more expendable than I anticipated.
-I never really recieved a project I could call my own; I spent most my time doing smaller and more insignificant tasks for my supervisor

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to assign larger projects to co-ops that they can take ownership on.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
