    Pros

It's a job, the co-workers are helpful to new employees. Benefits are good.

    Cons

Takes a long time to get hired if you don't know anybody. Some of the leaders have no management experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not wait so long to terminate the bad managers.

    Pros

You see interesting cases. The EMR is also helpful in review patient files

    Cons

Clinic schedule is over-booked and rarely finishes on time. Due to the lack of time scheduled for each appointment, patients are usually kept waiting for 30-60+ minutes before they are put in a room.

    Pros

You have set work hours so you know exactly when you will get off of work. There are also opportunities for overtime to get a little extra pay.

    Cons

There is a lack of on-going learning experiences and career development. Direct report/manager also lack professionalism.

I have been working at Duke University Health System full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, Great retirement package if you are salaried

    Cons

No work life balance, hard to advance to leadership positions if you don't already have leadership experience, annual raises are small...less than 3 percent

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more ways for non clinical staff to obtain leadership experience other than administrative fellowships which are geared towards graduate students and recent grads

I have been working at Duke University Health System full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    The medical benefits are outstanding.

    Cons

Senior and middle supply management make decisions based on theory, instead of evidence-based practice or instead of including the front line employees' opinions & concerns; process improvement and efficiency is at an all time low especially with the implementation of the new cancer center and new medical pavilion; their motto now is "work more with less." The nursing staff is unhappy and short-staffed; HR is a joke when it comes to getting a job, the Procurement department is grossly overworked, unappreciated, and micromanaged.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

LIsten to your front line staff; we know better than you do when it comes to the needs and concerns of the facilities. Please consider your hard workers for management/supervisory positions; the ones you have in there now are clueless. Try rewarding people with compliments or occasional kudos, some of us work hard and out work the slackers you have a hard time getting rid of; recognition goes a long way.

I have been working at Duke University Health System full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Stability, good benefits especially if you take advantage of the educational benefits allowing you to go back to school and use the tuition reimbursement.

    Cons

Pay is not competitive at all. Not rewarded for achieving an Exception performance review. May have some difficulty moving to higher levels even though you more than qualify for position. I interviewed for several position and was called back three times for additional interviews, but never received the position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Competitive salaries, better increases which line up with performance review. More opportunities for growth for staff assistants.

Duke School of Nursing doesn't respect their staff assistants. Most are over qualified, but not treated as such.

I worked at Duke University Health System full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    They do train the assistants

    Cons

Low promotion rates, low raises, condescending by some of the professors. Family benefits costs too much and pay is low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the staff assistant titles to Sr. Administrative Assistants and Executive Assistants and pay them more. Don't add on more work to their duties and fail to pay them more or give them a title change.
