I worked at E*TRADE Financial full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very intelligent upper and middle management. E*trade has done a solid job of bringing on board top talent from other firms. They are also striving to be competitive and transform the company. Everyone at home-office level cares deeply for the success of the company.

    Cons

Unless you are in the tech or software side of the business, working at Etrade is more like working at a top-tier bank but with less pay, more frustration over lack of resources, and less opportunities.
    -Very long hours, little flexibility.
    - Pushing managers to give low reviews to employees. Promotions are almost impossible to secure in some teams. Structure set up for very low morale and will likely result in frustrated employees seeking opportunities elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve work-life balance, encourage more flexibility such remote work in HQ and home-offices; encourage positive peer and managerial feedback, as opposed to the opposite; restructure advancement process and ensure that all teams are given the opportunity to promote equally. Getting E*Trade to the next level does not require sacrificing employee happiness in the process.

I have been working at E*TRADE Financial full-time

    Pros

Pay scale is decent and the company provides good health benefits.

    Cons

Hard work and consistency have no value over at ETRADE. It is impossible to get promoted unless you are best friends with Managers and Directors. Even exploring options within ETRADE is perceived as betrayal by certain Directors. Bonus structure is also very subjective.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to your non managerial employees.

    Pros

Great time off policy. Good location in Arlington, VA very close to the metro and lots of lunch options around.

    Cons

Most of the cubicles have little to no natural light. Very few events that bring the entire company together in order to foster a positive culture. Managers are not interested in transparency or in the opinions of their employees. Very little opportunity to impact the business because the upper management is extremely insular. Even though the pay is decent it is not worth it at all.

    Pros

There are no Pros in E*trade

    Cons

Managers suck, they think they are Gods, most employees at E*TRADE are unhappy. Directors are rude and barely open their mouths to respond to a simple hello. you need to be part of the Click to get anywhere... if you are not a brown nose it's best for you to get the experience and leave ASAP

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are not GODS... it's too obvious that if employees don't suck up to you, they will get no where.. you have tendency of treating E*TRADE like a cotton field so please change people are employees, not slaves

    Pros

    flexible work hours. Convenient place.

    Cons

no training. the manual, someone needs to tell these people that everything is not black and white.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train directors about how to talk to employees. directors who manage 2 or 3 people think that they are gods sent . Talking to employees like we are some idiots. The arrogance of some of the managers, I wonder how these people become managers.

    Pros

You get paid every two weeks, if and only if your manager remembers to approve time cards with your planned vacation that you reminded him several times that you would be taking. If not, you only get half a pay check maybe, but your budget will be thrown off drastically.

    Cons

Senior management promotes by nepotism. If your the husband of some director, you'll get to take a 24 before anyone else who deserves it. If you're the drinking buddy and family vacation taker of the director, senior manager and manager, you'll probably be promoted to Team Lead. This makes it impossible for a rep to feel comfortable with following the chain of command, because the entire chain will be huddled up at each other's homes playing XBOX or whatever they do. This is worse than the rule "it's about who you know". Management in my group never did anything except compose threatening e-mails to the team about bringing in more leads that we wouldn't get compensation on. Senior management and directors don't care about the knowledge of the employee or the hard work and stress they go through, they just promote their frat buddies. I feel bad for the women and minorities. HR is a joke and management exploits that. Management and Senior Management, even if you are doing everything and more than your role requires, if you stay in a position too long, will attempt to force you to quit or force you into a position that you have no desire going to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want the queue numbers to decrease and the lead numbers to decrease, don't hire your drinking buddy who feeds the newer reps BS to tell the customer because they don't know themselves only to result in an escalation. And make sure your other drinking buddy doesn't make it so obvious that you are drinking buddies. Give the rest of the more tenured brokers some sort of hope of advancement even though there is absolutely no chance.

    Pros

There are no pro's other than they will pay you eventually.

    Cons

-Leadership lacks vision, understanding, and how to manage.
-For a firm that is supposedly tech savvy; they are about 10 years behind the rest of the industry.
-There is no clear vision of where this company is going.

    Pros

No free drinks, so can stay healthy!

    Cons

They use ancient technology. The place is run by folks who have been there for 15 years, and have an interest in keeping it that way. And of course getting information from them is impossible. Not much work to do. The drama compensates for that. The architecture team is a talking shop. They take a year to complete a project that should take a month, Expect to be yelled at and told repeatedly that you have you no idea about technology. Dont expect much help from HR. Recently they have beenlots of employees who have been frame and fired. HR tells you that the manager can do anything they want, including yell and spitting at you. If you're seriously down on your luck, consider this a temporary stopover.

    Pros

    Great Health Benefits
    Employee Benefits
    Flexible Work Schedule

    Cons

    Micro Management
    Inexperienced Management/Employees
Majority of the work staff have been employed since the start of their careers; therefore, they are not receptive to new ideas that are not conducive to what they are use to.
Managers will minimize the skills that you bring to the table to make themselves look good in the eyes of upper management. In addition, they will steal your ideas as their own.
    High turnover rate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your employees.
Welcome ideas from individuals that may go against the grain.
Invest in management training for all individuals who manage other employees.
Don't be afraid to highlight employee's strengths.
