May be the biggest, but they don't live up to what they claim to be.

    I worked at E. & J. Gallo full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good starting salary & benefits

    Cons

No structured on-boarding and training program, new employees are given an overloaded plateful of assignments that are added to virtually every week if not daily. They preach job/life balance but expect 24/7 if that's what it takes! Poor management that doesn't do their job then throws others under the bus to pass blame. I witnessed and was a victim of what can only be described as age discrimination - after 2008 great recession the then current manager of our department (as all others) was given a mandate to cut costs, did all we could operationally but it wasn't enough and he was too good of a man to do what was wanted to senior staff. He was removed and retired and a younger manager with no ties (or heart) came in and over next 18 months removed 8 of 12 salaried department positions, replacing a couple with younger people who were paid much less.

I understand this is business, but the way it was done was terrible. Senior salaried members with 25, 30 & 40 years of loyal service with no blemishes on their records were suddenly told they had unacceptable defects in their performance reviews and were basically shown the door with the choice of taking early retirement/quitting with their integrity intact or being fired on some trumped up unacceptable performance charge! Noticeably, every one was over 50 years of age, which meant they had the most tenure and highest salaries. Several were planning on retiring soon until the great depression lost half of their retirement income and hoped to work long enough to regain it. This was also done to senior salaried personnel in wine making, HR and others. A number of newer/younger employees who one would think would make it to top management abruptly quit, why invest your career in a company who treats other so callously. It's either walk in lockstep like a soulless robot or not being true to yourself. Unequivocally the worst job experience I've had in 40 years of employment. I even heard that many Gallo folks have left to go work for their competitors in the area and the people there have heard all this and more and those that get a job say it's like a different world.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you're going to have pep rallys and post huge banners and stickers all over the campus claiming 'We're All Family', then you need to understand that most people don't treat their families the way the Gallo's do!

    I have been working at E. & J. Gallo

    Pros

Strong name on your resume, easy to move out of the company. Well respected training program, and strong first job

    Cons

WORST management skills, at times verbally abusive. Unless you do exactly what they want they will start to phase you out. They get away with a lot of shady business practices because they are privately held.

    I worked at E. & J. Gallo full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Here are some of the best parts of Gallo.
    Great training program for employees
    Good compensation
    Excellent 401K
    Good benefits

    Cons

If you are looking for a stable company and to make good money Gallo is for you. If you want work satisfaction and feel like you are making a difference in an organization Gallo is not for you. The company in general is very set in its ways. My feeling is that Gallo does not like change and many employees feel threatened by change and new ideas. If you take a job at Gallo my advise is get in, learn what you can and move to a company that you can actually use what you have learned.

    Pros

great pay and benefits for central valley. Some learning opportunities for IT beginners. They make wine and there good at it. some good managers.

    Cons

I never worked at a place that wasn't clear on what direction they wanted to go in IT. Instructions are based on what the management sees at the time.
The other bad middle managers do not want to make a mistake. be aware they will blame you.
you are stuck with that manager.
Independent thinking out of the box an analysis of problems not done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

send some of the IT managers to a Business School and not the corporate one and two day classes.

    I have been working at E. & J. Gallo

    Pros

Good pay for the area. Decent medical and Dental. 401k. Opportunities for advancement. Inexpensive to live in area. Family cares about the workers.

    Cons

HIgh turn over. Burn out. Political. Merit is not important as knowing the right person. Culture is behind the times.. Resistant to change. Workers are forced to work long hours. Every program to make the place better like safety, culture training gets corrupted by middle management, who resist any kind of change that comes along. Sad to see all the money going to waste on these programs. If you are creative and voice your opinion, you will be targeted. Family and upper management are deceived by middle management. The lower one goes on the food chain, the more abuse encountered. No recourse. HR is worthless.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more creative people.. Clean out the corruption. Make anti corruption policy. Treat employees equal. Make it safe for women. Workers fear telling the truth for fear of losing their job. Human Resourses need to be trained to screen for sociopaths. Need more transparency, better communication between hourly and salary workers.

    Pros

Great colleagues and compensation, which however seems to little for having to deal with incompetent managers and having to live in Modesto,CA.

    Cons

Senior management was not up to the project requirements. Utter lack in leadership and technical expertise to warrant the on time delivery of important company wide projects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A drastic change in senior management needs to occur. The in-house grown managers only appear to understand how to brown-nose, and not how to lead teams.

This employer is stuck in the 1970s.

    I worked at E. & J. Gallo

    Pros

Good Health care options. Outstanding company 401k contributions. The company is very stable. IT training budget is very good (books, training all can be expensed). Vacation / sick time is very generous.

    Cons

Intensely political environment. Upper management asks opinions of workerbees only to get the answers they want to hear; those who voice objection or concern are considered to be troublemakers. Bias and cronyism factor heavily into performance evaluations and promotions. The environment is very politically conservative. Pay is below industry average for most white-collar jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Accept the fact that you don't know everything; it's OK to listen to the advice of non-managers sometimes. Consider promoting based on merit, rather than simply on who shmoozes the best.

    I have been working at E. & J. Gallo

    Pros

The company is a industry leader in terms of research and development. They have a extensive scientific knowledge of the wine making process. They are extremely methodical in research and have experts in all aspects of wine making from oenology to manufacturing. Also the beginning salaries are high for the food and beverage industry. In terms of wine manufacturing they have the resources and the size to utilize new and innovative methods which is unique to the wine industry. Also the emphasize on safety is to a much higher level then I have observed at other companies. Safety is built into their culture.

    Cons

Work life balance is non-existent. I receive e-mails at all times of day and night and there is an expectation that I will be on my blackberry to respond during weekends, vacations and holidays. Also there are pet projects from the Gallo family which do not have much merit but get pushed due to their influence. The politics in a company of this size is expected but the peaty nature is a bit shocking.

The turnover rate is also high from senior management to entry level professional staff. This is dependent on different departments but in the last couple years, the turnover has been increasing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please pay the long time employees appropriately!
