Top wine company across the country

Sales Representative (Former Employee)

I worked at E. & J. Gallo full-time for more than a year

ProsThe company's wine has the best reputation for retailers. The people they hire are great and supportive.

ConsSolitary work - you never see most of your coworkers. Case goals were aggressively unrealistic.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake all of the territories partner books.

Management Development Program

Sales Representative (Former Employee)
Dallas, TX

I worked at E. & J. Gallo full-time for less than a year

ProsFriendly management.
Fun meetings / tastings
Opportunities for bonuses and prizes by hitting individual goals

ConsSeparate from the distributors you'll actually be working for.
Unorganized
Little to no direction
Heavy lifting and long hours and weekends. Very poor work life balance.
Working all holidays (except Christmas Day and Thanksgiving day)
Unreasonable quotas for certain brands.

Advice to Senior ManagementThis job is better suited for individuals with little experience and grocery background. There is such a high turnover rate because reps are basically glorified grocery stock boys and none of us went to college for that.

Operations Management

Supply Chain Manager (Current Employee)
Modesto, CA

I have been working at E. & J. Gallo full-time for more than a year

ProsGrowing company with lots of opportunity to make a difference. Employees definitely do what it takes to get the job done.

ConsSenior Leadership does not 'walk the walk' as far as company values. Inbred culture makes it tough for an outsider.

Good for resume bad for work

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at E. & J. Gallo full-time for more than a year

ProsGood benefits
Fun out of work activities
Work experience
Good pay

ConsTerrible management and training. I haven't learned a thing from my boss in over 2 years. I might talk to him once every two weeks. They play the favorite card pretty bad. Gallo family members move up quick and they usually don't know anything. HR is a huge joke. The city of Modesto is awful, let me repeat that AWFUL.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake Gallo family member work outside of the company before placing them in management positions. Also upgrade office areas as they are terribly outdated.

A Job - Could Be a Career...

Team Leader II (Current Employee)

I have been working at E. & J. Gallo full-time for more than a year

ProsGood benenfits and definitiely a growing industry. Family owned and no stock holders to worry about and hostile take overs. Offers a challenging and secure opportunity.

ConsMiddle management is challenged by inexperienced leadership and poor decision making. The culture is drastically different across different areas / departments of the company. Though relationships are important to success in any business or professional position, the people at this company love to form impressions and there is alot of rumors that run throughout the business about employees. Sometimes good and sometimes bad. It is a slowly accepting environment that is difficult to break into and get to know and suffers a trust deficit for building trust amongst its employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementPractice what you preach and treat people the way you wish to be treated! Dont handicap individuals and not allow them to make decisions - otherwise known as micromanagement.

Don't look behind the curtain

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at E. & J. Gallo full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat sales/sales management training. Good marketing. Some smart people. Hard but great place to start a career.

ConsThere are really a very small number of key decision makers at Gallo. They are made men who have been with the company for decades (and don't know the world outside of Gallo) and Gallo family members ("The Family" as they even call themselves in a creepy sort of way). The closer you get to the seat of power the crazier the world is. This is a family company through and through. The Family will always run the business. Good place for business followers to have a career.

Great business to work in, but a culture of silos prevails

Finance (Current Employee)
Modesto, CA

I have been working at E. & J. Gallo full-time for more than 5 years

ProsWorking in the wine industry for the world's top wine company. The industry is fascinating, and the company is experiencing tremendous growth both domestically and internationally. As a result, there are many opportunities to learn. Employees are intelligent, driven, and talented. Many have worked at the company their entire lives - 20, 30, even 40 years. Salary and benefits are competitive.

ConsThis is a company whose success is the result of doing what they've always done, and doing it well. The downside to that is leadership tends to be very resistant to new ideas and change. The company is organized in functional silos that emanate downward from the individual core executive leadership team members. Cross-silo collaboration is very difficult without buy-in and support from top leadership. Patience, persistence, and keen political savvy are key to get innovative projects off the ground. Experienced hires tend to have to take a cut in title to get in the door. Advancement opportunities tend to go to those that are in with the good old boys, and not necessarily the most accomplished or qualified. Agree with the previous comment that certain business school graduates are arbitrarily selected for preferential career progressions that are denied to others, regardless of interest or merit. HR labels them "high potentials," known colloquially to their fellow employees as "the chosen ones." Corporate culture overall is more reminiscent of the '60s or '70s than the 21st century.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmpower employees, dismantle the outdated hierarchical structure, foster a culture in which failure is allowed and used as a learning opportunity, rather than an opportunity to cast blame. Embrace diversity and eliminate bias from hiring and promotion decisions.

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

ProsGallo is an industry leader. The training you receive is second to none in most aspects.

ConsSalary is below average for the industry.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on compensation to retain qualified employees. Also open up options for non-sales job progression outside of Modesto.
