I worked at E. & J. Gallo as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Great place to work. Everyone including Management is very easy to get along with. Willing to teach you plenty.

    Cons

They have rotating shifts every Four months. This is hard on the family. The same people get the same seasons every year. Ex; you can have the day shift for Thanksgiving, X mas New years....etc. but, the same people are always on the swing shift during that time as well.........not a great system. it needs to be rotated every 2-3 months to be fair to everyone so the same people don't get the "best deal" or the "worst deal" every season.

    I worked at E. & J. Gallo full-time

    Pros

The private (family) ownership allows management to invest in company and employees and maintain strategic long-term view. Met and learned from a lot of great people. Good sense of teamwork and rewarding work. Employees can chart a path through a variety of opportunities and learn a lot about the company while picking up valuable skills. Employees can take pride in the great portfolio of extremely successful products that friends and family enjoy.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be tricky in roles relating to operations, due in large part to seasonal nature of the business. Managers seem to understand this though and company rewards employees for their efforts and celebrates successes with employees.

    Pros

There are lots of opportunities in a wide variety of areas. Many positions allow for rotations in different positions or department. People are down to earth and enjoyable to work with. The work is challenging and rewarding.

    Cons

Expectations are high and people work hard. Employees need to take a leadership role in managing career paths, but managers are good at career discussions and helping employees develop.

    Pros

Pays wells compared to other Central Valley Companies. Huge opportunities to grow within your career as well as huge support to continue your education and skills base.

    Cons

Hours can be long and job requirements demanding based upon how close you get to the production side of the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come in with an open mind and ready to learn, they have the very brightest and best talent in the valley and they pay the amount they do to retain these types of individuals in which it shows if you see they are the Number 1 winery in the world!

Great place to work, but you have to drink the "wine"

I have been working at E. & J. Gallo full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fantastic opportunities to train cross-functionally, but don't expect to come from the outside and join the club. The dues to pay are high, the hours long and the fraternity is quite tight. They will value your outsider expertise but you will be trumped by dullwits who grew up with the family and have "do you remember when..." stories. Generally, people you work with are smart and passionate...

    Cons

Drink the "wine" (kool-aide) in order to move up...you must live in Modesto, and you must have weekend things to do with the "work family" in order to be clued in for Monday. Lots of inside talk and chatty chatty, especially by those trying to impress VPs and GMs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pull apart the wool from your eyes every once in a while...recognize those who add value but aren't of the "clan", and beware of those who use loyalty to manipulate you...focus on performance, competencies, skills and output...not just home address.
