Good if you are ready to work very, very hard. Watch out that your job can go away at any time

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExcellent benefits! Salary is very good! EMC Employees are awesome and have made it worth working here. tight knit groups. Have built a lot of great relationships. Technololgy/products excellent. If you have a lot of IT experience- you have much many more opportunities in areas

ConsIn my position- NO training. 100% OTJ. Learned from 'mistakes', instead of pro-active/proper training. Poor communication between my teams. Expect to work OT & lots of it. You get used to it and get very good OT/shift differential if hourly. Very stressful environment. Must be on your game 100% of time. Your job can 'go away' or be 'relocated' at the drop of a hat.. like mine. Even if you are top performer. You never know what is going to happen. If you want to get anywhere, Internal references are very important.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate to your employees! Treat them with respect--especially after you tell them they have no job in 3 months. Show you actually care and assist more in finding new positions.

    Good company in decline

    Principal Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    Hopkinton, MA

ProsGreat training, competitive salary. Initially started out in tech support ample opportunity for growth. Culture that use to value results, now changing for the worse.

ConsRequired work on Saturdays. Management laying off senior personnel, poor leadership. Aggressive release schedule without concern for work/life balance. Senior management continually make poor decisions and don't suffer repercussions.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand that the best people will not put up with the continued cycle of layoffs and then asking remaining people to pick up the slack all so senior management makes it quarterly goals.

EMC does not share the wealth with its employees

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Hopkinton, MA

ProsFlexible work hours, workwise, and decent benefits

ConsExpected to work 10-12 hour days, forget about ever getting a decent raise (even if your merit rating is 'consistently exceeds')

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you are not willing to fairly compensate your employees, quit having the pep rally quarterlies. Really sick of hearing how well EMC is doing, but yet most employees are lucky to get even a pitiful raise.

IIG division: no vision, living on past glory

    Consultant Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Pleasanton, CA

ProsIIG division: Big company, very nice talented people. Highly skilled professionals in technical roles.

ConsIIG division: lack of clear vision and direction. Lame upper management. Lots of good engineers leaving these past years.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake a decision, good or bad, and stick with it for longer than 2 years and a single release.
If it's a good decision, you win.
If it's a bad one, execute it so it becomes good.

    low salaries, grey ceiling

    Financial Analyst (Former Employee)
    Hopkinton, MA

Prosflexible schedules, good career stepping stone, good brand name

ConsWorked here for several years until I came to the realization that career growth opportunities were basically nonexistent and pay was consistently below market levels. Education will get you in the door, after some work experience you're better off finding a new company to work for.

    Silo Mentality

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat benefits, decent salary, though not great, encourage learning, great work-out facilities

ConsManagement at first professed that they were all about helping you drive for success. In the beginning they were there to assist in working with you while you were learning your position. One minor, and I do mean minor error, and that behavior is all over and it becomes having to prove yourself on a daily basis. Since so many of my colleagues were legacy people, 15 years plus, there is definite favoritism that puts a newbie at a disadvantage. It is so sad that it had to end on a negative not...since the company as a whole is great.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart being in touch with the people that report to you. Driving them out of fear will only burn them out!
