A job that went absolutely nowhere

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Pleasanton, CA

ProsIt has the benefits associated with a large company, such as a good health insurance plan.

ConsEMC is squeezing every penny they can from Documentum with as little investment in the product. Less than six months after I began working on the Documentum product, I was tasked with training a junior software engineer in Bangalore, India, to do my job. There was no chance for career advancement, and the offices are a ghost town from all of the layoffs over the years.

I have nightmares of returning to work at EMC Documentum.

Advice to Senior ManagementI'm unsure if the situation at Documentum can be remedied.

Big mistake, should have listened to warnings

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Franklin, MA

ProsIF you work for a good manager they will support and back you, Work life balance was great.

ConsWorking across departments is a battlefield. A lot of back stabbing and deceit. Taking credit for others work. Get blamed if a golden child makes a bad decision or huge mistake. Don't think about defending yourself if you are the chosen fall guy because they will make your life miserable and damage your professional reputation. Incompetence is rampant. Some departments have no work life balance yet others are taking naps and steeling from the company. Un educated incompetent people in management roles because they know some one. Illegal activities are covered up. Retaliation is allowed and HR protects the wrong people in their effort to save their own job. Shall I go on?????

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of the hard working honest employees and get rid of the trash. Only hire and promote employees who are educated and have the experience for the job. Throw out the olds boys network. Company desperately needs a culture change.

compensation is horrible.no stock options unless you're a director and above

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Hopkinton, MA

Prosvery work/life balanced. basically work 9-6.
lots of classes you can take.
    annual bonus is awarded quarterly

Consthe compensation is embarrassing compared with other tech companies. no stock options unless you're a certain level or above. very disincenting.

people have been working at the company for 15+ years. good in that there's a lot of institutional knowledge. bad in that people just kind of float there for their career. hard to be promoted if you haven't been there a minimum of 3 years.

so male dominated. HR tries to have programs to foster women but it's a joke. the management in my group literally sends out emails with "we have to be warriers, etc"

Advice to Senior Managementthe management does a great job of managing the stock price and shareholder expectations. overall great vision for the company. unfortunately that reward is not shared among employees.

The place where careers go to die.

Systems Technician (Current Employee) Franklin, MA

ProsFree gym membership, Interesting work, great peers in most cases.

Cons(Yes, i'm a contractor, but a very intelligent and capable one)
Cons: No reviews for contract staff, No raises for contract staff, False promises of getting hired when in the past 3 years only 2 or so contractors have been hired.
The management at EMC will turn a blind eye to every full time staff member that sits around and plays video games on their workstations- never completes tasks- and starts trouble with other staff, but will never notice the contractor that comes in every day, works their tail off for the good of the company, supports end of quarter requirements ect.
Management is too reliant on the words of corrupted staff members. If a staff member (especially group leaders) doesn't like a contractor, all they have to do is make up a reason and the management pounces all over it- thus ensuring the contractor will never ever be hired.

It looks like people who are given any position of responsibility in EMC have served some sort of military. This would be fine, except just because someone is in the military- it doesn't make them a good leader or even good with people.

Advice to Senior ManagementReview your leadership staff- especially on the lower levels.
Get rid of the dead weight staff- I.E, those that talk at their group leaders stations all shift, those that refuse to do certain tasks, those that do not support E.O.Q requirements.
    Hire on deserving contractors.
Give a raise to contractors that have been there at least 5 years... there are a TON!

    Stuck in the 1970s

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Hopkinton, MA

ProsThey have a nice gym with a swimming pool, and a cafeteria that's partly subsidized. Hopkinton is easy to get to from I-495, although that assumes you have a car.

ConsNo "work-life balance." Mgt. refuses to permit telecommuting or flex time because "that's not how we do things." It's all about face time and obeisance to the idea that the job is the most important thing in your life. Those who resist are subject to guilt trips. I encountered managers at various levels who should not have been in their jobs. Some were abusive toward underlings. Others were regarded as incompetent even by their peers, but were "protected" for political reasons. Atmosphere is very "Whitey McWhiteville" in that particularly smug and parochial suburban way, and there's most definitely a glass ceiling for women. EMC strings along contractors for years and years with promises of full-time jobs with benefits. Sometimes they make good on this promise; often they don't. And they love their meetings, to the point that they interfere with getting one's job done. Finally, they're major offshorers.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe other one-star commenter who said that giving advice was pointless, because EMC is not open to change, was correct. They're dinosaurs. The unfortunate thing is that when they eventually fail, they will take a huge chunk of the regional economy along with them.

EMC More Concerned About Numbers than People

Marketing Manager (Current Employee) Pleasanton, CA

ProsGood benefits. Paychecks arrive on time in my account. Travel expenses are processed quickly.

ConsToo large a company, incredible bureaucracy making it frustrating to get the simplest things done.
Too much hierarchy, old style management. The hardware side has no idea how to run a software company. Company encourages yes-men and does not support innovation. Company is too focused on the lowest dollar cost vendor without accounting for the resource and efficiency benefits that are lost when you go with the low-bidder.

Advice to Senior ManagementDecide on a vision and execute. Trust your employees to make good decisions.
