I have been working at EMC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Industry leader. Trying to change.

    Cons

Trying to transform, but change is hard. Very political. Lots of "Lifers" (15+ years) that are resistent to change and out of touch. Lay-offs bi-annually. Cash cow (storage) is flat to declining. Good Federation strategy at least on outside, but from the inside it is just window dressing... for every "cooperation" program announced at EMC World there is a competing one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Innovate don't imitate. You are paying way too much for start-ups. Ask yourself what value are your managers (VP and Sr. Directors) are really bringing to the table? Trust but verify what they are telling you Lots of duplication, inefficiencies and down right boondoggling.

I have been working at EMC full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The best reason to work for EMC is for the technical knowledge they provide. EMC is the leader in the industry for storage. Good managers and great colleagues.

    Cons

Although EMC claims to be a pay for performance company, you will find a low performer and high achiever getting the same wage increase, if any. Furthermore, my group has lost our most talented individuals because EMC refuses to pay them what they are worth. They are now in other departments or other companies making 10's of thousands more. EMC really doesn't pay you what you are worth. I know multiple colleagues who are very actively looking for other jobs. Right now I can say morale is low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This will fall on deaf ears, but I think management needs to worry more about their employees compensation than quarterly profits. EMC is just another big business company. No real intrinsic value left.

    I worked at EMC full-time

    Pros

Great individual contributors. Gave me the skillset to get the great job I have today.

    Cons

Promotions are far and few between. Raises are minimal and were skipped two years in a row. Took my bonus and raise from me after a customer assaulted me and I complained about it.

I worked at EMC full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Willing to use technology to provide a better work life balance. Example ..telecommuting. The employees are knowledgeable and willing to teach ,train, learn. Middle management is flexible and willing to assist.

    Cons

Not much opportunity for career advancement /pay increase. Not strong in communicating goals and plan. Division of labor between groups leads to confusion & company is extremely top heavy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

share in the wealth. value the people making you your bonus.

I have been working at EMC full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The benefits are good but have slipped over the years. Great campus with on site gyms in most buildings. EMC name still looks good on a resume!

    Cons

No work life balance. Working across multiple geographies means working around the clock. No budget for equipment or headcount which is leading to quality issues and burnout of employees which will have huge implications going forward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward your A players. Promotions are few and far between, raises aren't keeping up with the cost of living. Salaries have fallen behind the industry. The exodus has begun. This was a great company but remember, it doesn't matter how good your sales team is if they don't have a quality product to sell.

I have been working at EMC full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

No matter what function or level, this is a fast paced company, with a ruthless focus on results. Take initiative and be passionate about your work. Lots of talented people work here, especially early in career.
Can be an exciting an vibrant experience.
Once you've earned your stripes, you also earn trust and flexibility.
Progressive regarding remote working in most cases.

    Cons

    Command and control, hierarchical culture.
Pervasive toxic leadership in some organizations.
Lots of politics and emphasis on flash instead of substance.
Some lifers have become complacent and are enabled to remain while offering little to no value.
For an 'innovative' high tech company, they are laden with red tape and process.
Resources are tight and headcount is almost impossible to grow. Even replacing a person who leaves voluntarily or is let go is difficult. This results in poor performers staying on longer than they should - even at very senior levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward healthy leaders rather than those that strong arm.
Invest in management development, especially in the Sales and HR organizations.

I have been working at EMC full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Steady pay, good benefits, good products, generous educational opportunities. No shortage of thank-you's voiced by leadership. Not much else good I can think of.

    Cons

20% Performance based pay. 24 by 7 on call, including holidays, for field management. Leadership is always saying thank-you, but doesn't back it up financially.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Staff for the 24 by 7 mission in the field, so we don't have to worry about the phone ringing nights, weekends and holidays. $24b in revenue, paying dividend and 69k employees, means there is no excuse for 24 by 7 standby. It's bad leadership to ignore it.
