I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    1. Excellent salary and benefits - it is almost impossible to move to another company that could competitively match these.
    2. Previously, extra effort was rewarded.
    3. Excellent about work-from-home or remote locations.
    4. Excellent for interns and fast-track hires.

    Cons

    1. Resources are being shifted to higher-growth product areas (as they should), but it is leaving other areas too lean.
    2. In lower-growth products areas, there is little hiring locally but more in sister departments in other countries.
    3. If you are the leader of a project within a lower-growth product area, it can be very difficult to get engineers to spend time on your project, since they are spread pretty thin across other projects. At that point, you either take on an inhuman amount of the work yourself, or you don't and you appear unproductive.
    4. Lately, extra effort has not been rewarded, and is almost expected.
    5. Poor work-life balance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Focus Focus Focus! If you want something done, let your people focus on it; don't spread them so thin.
    2. Let those engineers become experts and more comfortable in fewer areas. Constantly reassigning them to the hottest program without the right qualifications forces them to press through a natural learning curve, deliver poorer project estimates, and lower quality work.
    3. Better staffing for even the lower-growth product areas, especially if you still want work to be done and in a timely manner.

  2. It's a stable company. But if you are young and ambitious. Probably not the place for you.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great employees and supporting system

    Cons

Very conservative. Promotion is more about seniority rather than ability and achievements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think outside the box. Challenge the status quo. Encourage innovation and new ideas. EMC is getting behind compare to the competitors in terms of thinking and ways of operation.

I have been working at EMC

    Pros

EMC is a great company with a huge future. They are number one in their industry. Great executive team. Great benefits.

    Cons

The ratio of presales employees to products/offerings (from their portfolio) is way off. Each Engineer has to know, and speak to, the whole portfolio during sales campaigns and its just too much responsibility and as such everyone is more of a generalist.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great opportunity to learn and work with great solutions

    Cons

Once acquired company if fully under wing its all ugly business, bottom dollar only, get things as cheap as possible but sell at high as possible. All driven from small centralized HQ vacuum.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try not to be so cold and calculating about everything. Share a little more

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You get to work with some industry experts, great peers to work with and good benefits

    Cons

Some technologies are very old and do not give you the required cutting edge to make salable in market outside

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

consider an even pay out of profits, invest more in making employees happy. Give higher incentive & perks to engineering than to marketing/sales/finance.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and my team, mostly because of my boss, has a very good work-life balance
My biggest Pro is actually being close to work (short commute)!

    Cons

Since most of my team is remote (in other cities/countries), I find the work environment very boring.
EMC also has a history of laying people off, especially if they can find cheaper workers in India/other.
It annoys me to constantly hear EMC is 'a great place to work'. Maybe its just time I moved on, but I think EMC could do much better and doesn't compare to other big companies in the Bay Area. For instance the cafeteria here (SC) is the worst I've ever experienced in the Bay Area, and most EMC locations don't even have one.
I've seen lots of 'good' people leave or get whacked in only 3 years. Almost like a epidemic here in SC.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop laying off good people and opting to hire lessor qualified people in other countries simply because they are cheaper. This is a shameful and stupid practice (you get what you pay for in my experience). I've personally witnessed several groups/areas that have degraded in expertise & quality due to this practice. I also think making an effort to co-locate more teams so people can actually work with others in-person and not deal with remote sites all around the world is not only more efficient but makes for a much better work environment. Don't forget people are what makes a company special and 'a great place to work'.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The company has great benefits if you are hired on to the company. Many of the new hires are hired on as contractors and within a year the company may convert you over to a full time employee.

    Cons

There is not very much room to move up within a specific department. The company does not offer promotions unless you are to switch departments.
