I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Work with smart, dedicated people from different cultures
Work from home policy provides quality of life benefit
    Excellent benefits package
Opportunities to move within the company

    Cons

Using 1990s business practices and applications in most of the operational groups but they still keep the same leadership in place making the same bad operational decisions

IT is completely dysfunctional at EMC. It takes a herculean effort to get basic things accomplished and people who are successful just learn to navigate the system. Accenture is everywhere and basically runs IT. People are drowning in processes

Raises are infrequent. It is common HR practice to only give annual raises to the top 30%. As a result, pay is below industry average. Company uses salary + bonus to calculate comparisons with straight salary at other companies.

The culture is incestuous and has an old boys network which is a throwback to the company's early days that remains in place. They value longevity vs.experience brought in from the outside which results in "group think" and lack of innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at fresh ideas from new talent.
Invest your IT dollars more wisely - Accenture consultants who have been with EMC for years have lost their justification for higher pay. Convert these people or replace them with full time.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, a lot of very smart people at the individual contributor level. Very flexible on hours, working from home, etc.

    Cons

Executives over-promise on products resulting in terrible quality upon initial release. As a result there is tons of churn as products go from hot topics to buggy problems to closed down which leads to layoffs even of new hires. Extremely vertical organization results in lots of maneuvering by management and a lot of dishonesty.

    Pros

Depending on the team, you may get to work with good people. Benefits are just okay, nothing much to talk about. Seldom get work emails/calls after 6 pm.

    Cons

Poor management. No transparency. Very arbitrary decisions percolated down to development teams without explanation. Lot of duplicate efforts, with every team fighting to get a piece of the pie. Too much inter-team politics. Management does not promote or encourage good performers. HR is non-existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of old-time all-powerful ever-in-charge "consultant engineers". Almost seems like they've unionized the place, and no one can question them or their design/ideas, let alone work with them during the design phase. Encourage newer developers and designers to participate in design, esp those that have demonstrated potential. Educate middle-level management on management skills - this is a much-lacking skill here.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Industry leader. Trying to change.

    Cons

Trying to transform, but change is hard. Very political. Lots of "Lifers" (15+ years) that are resistent to change and out of touch. Lay-offs bi-annually. Cash cow (storage) is flat to declining. Good Federation strategy at least on outside, but from the inside it is just window dressing... for every "cooperation" program announced at EMC World there is a competing one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Innovate don't imitate. You are paying way too much for start-ups. Ask yourself what value are your managers (VP and Sr. Directors) are really bringing to the table? Trust but verify what they are telling you Lots of duplication, inefficiencies and down right boondoggling.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The best reason to work for EMC is for the technical knowledge they provide. EMC is the leader in the industry for storage. Good managers and great colleagues.

    Cons

Although EMC claims to be a pay for performance company, you will find a low performer and high achiever getting the same wage increase, if any. Furthermore, my group has lost our most talented individuals because EMC refuses to pay them what they are worth. They are now in other departments or other companies making 10's of thousands more. EMC really doesn't pay you what you are worth. I know multiple colleagues who are very actively looking for other jobs. Right now I can say morale is low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This will fall on deaf ears, but I think management needs to worry more about their employees compensation than quarterly profits. EMC is just another big business company. No real intrinsic value left.

    Pros

Great individual contributors. Gave me the skillset to get the great job I have today.

    Cons

Promotions are far and few between. Raises are minimal and were skipped two years in a row. Took my bonus and raise from me after a customer assaulted me and I complained about it.

I worked at EMC full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Willing to use technology to provide a better work life balance. Example ..telecommuting. The employees are knowledgeable and willing to teach ,train, learn. Middle management is flexible and willing to assist.

    Cons

Not much opportunity for career advancement /pay increase. Not strong in communicating goals and plan. Division of labor between groups leads to confusion & company is extremely top heavy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

share in the wealth. value the people making you your bonus.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good but have slipped over the years. Great campus with on site gyms in most buildings. EMC name still looks good on a resume!

    Cons

No work life balance. Working across multiple geographies means working around the clock. No budget for equipment or headcount which is leading to quality issues and burnout of employees which will have huge implications going forward.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward your A players. Promotions are few and far between, raises aren't keeping up with the cost of living. Salaries have fallen behind the industry. The exodus has begun. This was a great company but remember, it doesn't matter how good your sales team is if they don't have a quality product to sell.
