I have been working at EMC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Everybody knows EMC and having it on your resume is positive yet nobody will ask you why you want to leave. Great career advancement opportunity if you are a white male who trophy hunts and spends time with colleagues at the bar.

    Cons

    - Fear and shame based management -Who you know vs what you know success factor -Aggressive to point that drives many to enage in unethical behaviour which is often condoned

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take HR seriously. Management needs training. Biased culture so pervasive that it is normalized. Noi work life balance.

I worked at EMC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

None! ....I guess the only thing is the pay and that you'll learn a lot!

    Cons

Be prepared to be treated like crap, work 50-70 hour weeks and get no recognition for it, and after taking the time to learn EMC's technology and industry, to be let go for some one with more experience...perhaps in the corporate office, the experience is different.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to get to know your employees and see their potential. Don't ruin their careers when you see the first sign that they don't have enough technical knowledge about a product. Also, avoid defamation, and fraudulent claims on the PIP plans. Don't set your employees up to fail, or make promises and agreements where you mislead them. I know former EMC employees who are considering suing their former managers or EMC.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay and good benefits. Does attract some highly talented technical staff at the low levels. EMC has a good brand name for now. Hosts good conferences.

    Cons

Invests too much in overseas product development which will tarnish the EMC brand soon due to poor product quality. The middle management at EMC is uninspiring and untalented with very dated skills which leads to an aggressively political environment. Much of the leadership is too fearful of retribution for making a wrong decision which inevitably causes lost opportunities. The culture at EMC looks to blame others rather than getting the work done and often takes credit from someone else's efforts and accomplishments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At your next employee survey ask questions regarding the topics in the Cons section and allow the employees to specifically identify the incompetent management by name. You'll soon see who truly needs to be "restructured" rather than laying off the hard working and dedicated workers. And open your eyes to the true cost of offshoring your software development and bring those jobs back to the US.

I worked at EMC as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

It's a successful, large company with an equally large internship program. Many people have told me that their time at EMC was enjoyable.

    Cons

The work culture/attitude of EMC is incredibly uncomfortable and stressful. My boss tried to tell me I wasn't being paid for certain things when the time was, in fact, billable. Occasionally he also tried to get me to work overtime for free (since at EMC interns are discouraged from working overtime).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stressing out your employees makes them less productive. A more comfortable environment is much better for work and creative thinking.

    Pros

Peers are great to work with

    Cons

-Salaries are so low there is no incentive to advance stick it out as hourly
-Management holds employees accountable for them not meeting their bonuses.
Quote from last meetin - "You are taking food off of my childrens plates"
They lack the ability to properly motivate and manage a work group.
Force us to start work 30 minutes before our shift starts and refuse to pay us for that 30 minutes.

I have been working at EMC full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Not many good reasons to work there; they still allow remote workers and for some people to work from home. Didn't have to relocate to take this job.

    Cons

Lack of diversity. Barely no women in exec roles, and certainly no people of color. Some chief leaders don't have degrees and they are very old school- don't use smart phone, etc. This all reflects in their behavior. They say they can't find qualified women to promote. People are extremely rude. Entry level people have aggressive tone, say things like "take it up with the boss". Very disrespectful of seniority and experience. Foul language is often used in the workplace. Doesn't really seem like a high tech company. It's like working in an old fashioned steel plant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A diverse workforce will add some innovation and balance of approach. It will bring EMC into the modern era where people act professionally, they don't curse or tell sexist jokes in the workplace. It is because all your senior leaders look and act the same, that they find this behavior acceptable. It is easy to see that EMC started >30 years ago as a furniture company. They are not high tech!

    Pros

Great Products, Great Name. You will learn a lot about storage and can really build a good foundation.

    Cons

Everyone is like sharks. Little to no Diversity in idea, people or cultures. Not very fun place to work. Everyone is middle aged or older so no going out for drinks. Be prepared to work over 60+ hours a week. Very little resources and very little rewards or recognition.

I worked at EMC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, benefits, opportunities to learn new technologies.

    Cons

Work-life balance is non-existent and they will drive you until you can't take it anymore. More are unhappy but won't say it and I saw several leave in my tenure there to go to other tech companies to get away from the culture and were happy they left also. I advised a couple of friends to look elsewhere in their search.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look hard at the middle management layer as that is the piece of the pie that drove me away and is still driving others.

I worked at EMC full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I changed divisions withing emc and I always had smart and friendly colleagues.

    Cons

    - When I moved from east coast to the west coast, the HR offered no relocation, inspite of me asking him a few times
    - got a promotion but got only 3% raise
    - After 5 years when I applied outside, i realized I was being paid 40% below the market(stock+bonus)
    - Always interview outside emc, every 2 years to understand your worth so you can negotiate with HR

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees with respect. You cannot expect to get good engineers in California, if you are going to pay then 30-40% below the market.
