    Pros

I really can not think of any pros other than it was a job that payed the bills ...

    Cons

Lots of politics and incompetent engineers. Not much respect for hard working employees... Lots of favoritism within managements. Obvious disconnect between HR and personnel. Has seen and felt discrimination and self biasing exerted by managers. Overall, Not a pleasant working environment (mostly due to management attitudes and incompetencies). Lots of layoffs...

    Advice to Management

Managers need to value hard working employees and give them promotions. None of the managers have "managing" and "people" experience. Managers/directors need to open their minds to new ideas and work hard instead of trying to find escape goats or under-dogs for their screw ups. Managers need to find ways to reduce the number of layoffs and engage/contribute to scheduling, distributing and assigning clear responsibilities and instructions, There is no "company process" in place. Managers need to put an end to favoritism and bureaucracy. They need to hire knowledgeable and responsible/credible employees...

    Pros

A lot of talented people work in the engineering side, only thing that has kept the doors open. Other than that, there aren't any pros really.

    Cons

the culture is absolutely horrible. This is set by the poor management from top to bottom. There isn't a single qualified person in their position. The top management are engineers whom have zero business sense and are wasting their true talents. This is leading them to hire awful middle, and lower management. because these people are not qualified or confident in their positions, they use fear to control people. If they feel threatened by how hard you work, they go out of their way to make you look bad. I worked there for almost seven years and worked my butt off. My boss felt threatened by the level of work I was producing and promptly set me up in a bogus situation and had me terminated. Unfortunately, I was not the first person to receive such treatment.

    Advice to Management

Fire all and start over with new culture and mindset ASAP!

  3. Emcore has the potential to be a market leader, but the internal disfunctional management is killing this company

    Pros

The cutting edge technology in several areas is an incentive to work at this company. And I liked the can-do attitude to get problems solved at the technical level.

    Cons

There were several million-dollar programs that were being run as graduate student projects. No documentation, no work processes, and 'star' leaders that would not work with anyone. Teamwork was not something that was encouraged, and individual mistakes were severely punished.

    Advice to Management

Bring in an experienced business management team and demote the PhD's to technical leadership. Focus on the value of product lines, and the actual costs of each product line. Install teamwork processes, and create business processes and structures. Make the effort to really value your personnel, instead of using them as a cash-flow balancing tool.

    Pros

The technical staff who work here are typically incredibly knowledgeable and talented.

    Cons

The high talent level is dragged down by an inability to remove obvious dead weight, which typically moves up the ladder with this company. If you are useless, or are good at sounding intelligent without putting any effort into your ideas you should apply today with this company, you will probably make manager within a few years. Salaries are abysmal, and the rewards are only verbal. If you can pay your bills with "atta-boys" you will be just fine. Unfortunately, most of us need an monetary investment in our personal worth from our employer. The saddest part is that everyone at the company who is not buddy-buddy with senior management knows that it is a terrible company, and has grown to expect things to not change.

    Advice to Management

Go join a terrorist organization, so they can benefit from your highly effective ways at demoralizing members and destroying competent people.

    Pros

Umm.... I guess if you suck at your job then you might be safe here.

    Cons

Pretty much everything from pay to incentives to equipment to employee morale and getting anything accomplished. Oh and the stock price performance is a joke.

    Advice to Management

Quit. You're all talk and no substance. It amazes me that you're still employed in your capacity considering the stock price performance and the inability of your company to do anything well. If it wasn't for the US government propping you guys up you're house of cards would have been dead a long time ago. Talk is cheap and everyone worth keeping can see through your charades.

    Pros

The are no pros other than I have a job this week. Some people are nice.

    Cons

No raises, no bonus, benefits cut, no money to get tools needed to do job. Management hands off. Benefits horrible. Salary low. People do not help. 80s style management except its 30 years later.

    Advice to Management

Get the dead management out or just move to china.

    Pros

Some very good people who are working very hard to keep the place afloat. These people are worth way more than they are getting.

    Cons

No interest in fixing things the right way.....just slap it back together and keep the wafers moving.

    Advice to Management

If you intend to keep the manufacturing in the states (questionable) then you will need to modernize some of your equipment.

    Pros

Laid back work environment. Good work/life balance. There was a solid foundation at least from a resource standpoint after the divestiture from Intel.

    Cons

Clear lack of direction from senior management. Their acquisition of Intel's Optical Platform Division was followed by sugar coated kool aid speeches of how the employees are the most important asset. Six months later there was a mass layoff because of The Great Recession. Those who were left were given promotions even though they were not the best candidates to fill in the void. To say that title inflation runs amok at that place is an understatement. My very job was posted on the company's website a year ago, and I was not even given time of day after applying again. Wow, so you didn't even consider calling back those you laid off? Quality costs, but it looks like you don't want to put your money where your mouth is after reading the other reviews by current and former employees. I cringe thinking what has become of all the top shelf test and capital equipment that is languishing in a shelf or storage area. I'd love to use a fraction of it in my current job.

    Advice to Management

I don't know who replaced the senior management that left during the great purge, but they seem to be no better. You failed to retain the best and the brightest and it shows in your standing in the fiber optics space

    Pros

Very bright engineers who enjoy the technology

    Cons

Extraordinarily cheap company which refuses to spend money on even the basics (office supplies, lab supplies, laptops, wireless that works); currently offers salaries below market value because of the bad economy; has very poor benefits (thank God for my wife's benefits!); many people seem bitter at the company culture of "do twice as much with half the support"

    Advice to Management

Update from Lotus Notes, for God's sake! It has the worst GUI ever. That will save us many hours per week of extra work. Spend a little money to keep your employees happy; give them the tools they need to do their jobs. Otherwise, as the economy gets better, there will be a huge exodus.
