Great place to work, but at the whim of the government

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Lexington, MA

ProsFlexible schedule, as long as you work 80 hours every two weeks, they really don't care how you get them in. Excellent benefits for the most part. Top notch health plan. Casual work environment, jeans, sneakers, etc. And for the most part everyone has their own office. No cubicles.

Three weeks vacation to start with, four weeks after 2 years.

ConsThere's no real career advancement path unless you really carve one out for yourself. Almost all work is federal gov't, so when there's a shut down or a sequester, work dries up. Also, it's all about billable hours, so if you get stuck at home because of a blizzard, you're expected to find a way to make up those 8 billable hours. Same thing if you're traveling for work. That time in the air, you better be working on something billable.

They have a good profit sharing match they put into your 401k, but only once a year instead of spread out over every paycheck. So if you leave anytime during the year before that payout, you won't get a penny of that payout.

You get a lot of vacation time, but only six paid holidays.

    Great people; difficult career advancement

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe benefits are very good (vacation time, tuition reimbursement, etc.). The people who work here are very dedicated, intelligent, and friendly. There aren't a lot of stringent policies that large companies can have; generally, they operate by a "reasonableness" policy where they are conisderate of employees' needs, and ask for the same in return.

ConsIt is extremely difficult to advance your career. While you may take on little bits of added responsibility, that is project-dependent and may not necessarily mean you've advanced in any way. There are a tremendous number of Vice Presidents, with no clear path from entry level, regardless of initiative. It's also possible to get "stuck" in a particular area of work that you aren't interested in. By working in an area once, if that area of work grows, you may be repeatedly depended on to continue that kind of work. Work outside of your immediate manager is difficult. If you express interest & expertise in another group's project, they may say they'll include you, but never do.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide (paid/billable) training for managers.

    Good place to work

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Lexington, MA

ProsERG is a great place to work if you're in certain work groups. There are many opportunities to switch groups, work on new projects and become 'the expert' in new areas of work. My fellow employees were smart, motivated, and hard-working. There is a certain pride that goes along with working for a company that does important environmental and policy work.

ConsIf you work for a manager who doesn't ecognize accomplishment, or even good work, then you may not get satisfactory reviews and raises. Bad behavior is sometimes tolerated from employees in very visible positions. I was shocked to have a door slammed in my face by a very senior person (fortunately not my manager).

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good hiring practices but implement a more structured review process.

    Excellent place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsFlexible schedule. Very low level of disfunction. People at all levels operate from a high level of respect for all employees. You are given a lot of room to take on as much responsibility as you would like to.

ConsThere is not a strong emphasis on growth, which can be good, but sometimes it would be nice if there was more aggressive focus on moving into new work areas. Entrepreneurial/aggressive business development is not necessarily rewarded.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
