    Pros

    young fun group of people to work with and your challenges change daily. Their is always something new to learn and be applied every day.

    Cons

    commisions are extremely hard to earn despite the promise you will break through to earning the 20% commission in 6 months. Echo's policy is deceiving in that it requires you to not only earn the commission percentage, but then it must be paid in by the client for it to count. With 30 day payment terms the commission is backlogged by at lest 2 months IF, in the rare instance, a client actually pays on time. As an Account Manager you are also responsible for handling your own Accounts Receivables when clients do not pay and Echo provides very little support or backbone to getting the invoices paid, which is key for you to earn your money. The bottomline is that it is extremely difficult to earn any kind of additional commission in your first 6 months, and you can expect only roughly $100 to $200 per month in your first year.

    Advice to Management

    The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. Echo is constantly changing which metrics are the most integral to success and you are always getting a different goal from every different manager.

    Pros

    Competition among your peers is not tough. I was 24 when I took the job, a few years of sales under my belt. Most of the 30 in my training class were 22 and just excited to have a job. It was like a continuation of college. Very strange. Either way, if you know how to sell at all you look like a genius in training, especially since the trainers are only in their mid-20's. Also, they have enough money to afford to pay you your small salary even if you can't sell, so job security is great.

    Cons

    Don't work here if you live in the suburbs. It's not worth the travel. You start looking at your hourly rate in relation to amount of time devoted to work and it's horrendous. My work day was 10 hours and 15 minutes, add over 3 total hours of travel a day and it equals a terrible life. You also get assigned a "mentor". Maybe you get a good one. I got one that had less sales experience than me and she was extremely condescending. Very unprofessional with limited knowledge. People there are just roo inexperienced.

    Advice to Management

    Well you guys are doing what you're doing and it's successful for you. Brokerage isn't going to last forever though and I know management knows that. Can't beat pallet rates from the big guys and the technology isn't innovate at all like you claim. Not much value to sell for the educated customer.

    Advice to Management

    Promotions are not available, training is too long and takes the wind out of your sails fast. Ok for a first job but you can make more bartending three nights a week...

    Be prepared to cold call and sell a competitive service that is hard to sell because of the resources you are given

    Treated like you are easily replaceable benefits package (lack there of) communication between departments

    Advice to Management

    If you want to continue to be a Technology driven company then listed to the Technology experts, not the guys in suits that sit in meetings all day playing office politics!

    Pros

    Young atmosphere constant change, and Beer Friday.

    Where to begin: For starters, the 'Logistics Sales Trainee' period is outrageous. 6 months of managers the same age as you making you feel replaceable. The training period is going through rotations for 6 months, doing jobs they don't want to hire actual full time employees for. In short, you upload documents for 6 months and then do one week of sales training and get thrown on the sales floor and are expected to make all these goals when you have very little guidance. The atmosphere is so young that promotions are based on favoritism, not because the person actually deserved it. Communication between departments is terrible, I would even say there is no communication period. The pay is horrible and not competitive to other Logistic companies in Chicago. The only way they make up for wasting 6 months of your life is bringing in beer on Fridays mid-afternoon.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees and what they have to say. Learn how to communicate with each other and make changes with the training program. The turnover rate would be much lower if even the smallest changes started getting made.

    Pros

    Young culture and extracurricular activities are geared toward that. Atmosphere is light and loose. The potential here is staggering ... if they can reach it remains to be seen. There are many things that we do well. But many, many others that we simply get by on brute force.

    Cons

    Quantity over quality is the name of the game. Focus is on turning out code, which is often sub-par. It is not a collaborative environment. Not just between individual development teams, but between the business and the analysts, the analysts and the developers, and between development teams. We simply do not work well together to compliment each other. Pay and benefits in IT is mediocre, especially given the hours and effort expended, turnover is high. No investment in training for IT staff. Not on the business. Not ongoing technical training.

    Advice to Management

    There are a lot of young managers, who were promoted from within the company, which is generally good. But there is little balance between young guns that only know the "Echo Way" and seasoned professionals that can help the company improve. There are some smart people in IT. Put the brightest from IT and the business in a room and engage them. Collaborate with them. Then challenge them. They will challenge you back and help you to examine your preconceptions. Put all the pieces to the puzzle on the table so we can find the missing pieces together. The result will be truly dynamic partnership.

    Good place to get logistics Experience. 35K salary ( is a pro if thats all you want in life) Not a pro if you are trying be a provider

    Incentives that actually have money in them. commission plan with an actual chance for commission. Think more about the employees than your own pockets

    Pros

    Two weeks of all-expense paid classroom training in Chicago Young culture, 'Beer Fridays' Competitive salary for entry level position Good place to obtain industry knowledge and experience

    Cons

    Meetings upon meetings (group and one-on-one), day after day, management shadowing you on the phones, and your supervisor sits just feet away from you in an office environment with no walls and no privacy. Metrics are sent out about every two hours. New hires are expected to make 80-100 cold calls, send out two quotes to new clients, achieve 20% talk time on the phones, and add about 30 leads a day (which you aren't allowed to do during office hours). If you have a question or task for your supervisor, they most likely don't have time for you right now because they're stretched thin among 15-20 sales reps. In December, Echo redesigned its commission structure and nearly all sales reps who were making commission saw a significant decrease in their paychecks - and Echo can change commission anytime it wants to, so we could see another pay cut in the near future. If you're a new hire, you won't make commission for at least a year after you hit the sales floor (unless you get obscenely lucky), and the incentives are few and far between ('free dinner' or 'fancy office chair' are the incentives offered for hitting goals, and they're tough to hit). Also, Echo's Accounts Receivable department exists only to establish and extend credit/buffer days, so you are responsible for obtaining payment from your clients - and commission is based off of what your customers have paid. If your client goes into collections and defaults, you are responsible for about 22% of what they owe...this will be deducted from your paycheck. When it comes to actually selling, what you find is that you're selling an average product at an average or inflated price in an extremely saturated market. Most businesses you call are very happy with their 'current transportation solution' and have no reason to switch, plus they're annoyed at the amount of calls they get everyday from 3PLs just like you. It's tough to sell on service in an economy where so many businesses just care about price. Bottom line - there are definitely worse jobs out there. These are just things I wish I knew before I took the job.

    Advice to Management

    Trust your employees and dangle carrots in front of them - their only motivation to achieve goals right now is to keep management off their back. Coercion is NOT the same as motivation, especially not in sales. Give employees some level of autonomy and privacy, along with challenging but attainable goals & incentives, and productivity will increase.

    Pros

    The IT dept at Echo is top notch. The entire team wants to make a great product. The IT managers are great. They can be a tad bit arrogant, but name me one IT manager who isn't one of the most arrogant people you've meet. There is a real chance for advancement in this dept, which is rare for IT. And it isn't based on favorites, but skill level. However...

    Cons

    The Executives do not give us any respect or time to do what's right. They're constantly pushing us to do things quick and easy. The pay and benefit structure do not match the market. The health insurance plan for families is the worst I've ever seen offered to an IT dept. The co-pay is almost $800/month. Most employees with families do not use Echo's insurance cause the cost is too high. It's cheaper for them to purchase it online or use their spouse's plan. The 401k matching is the bare minimum a company can offer and still legally be able to state they have matching 401k. It's all based on very long term vestments so you'll never see the matching $. They claim your bonuses is a max of 5%, but in reality it's only maxes out at 2.5%, vs. the standard 10% offered by most IT places. The upper management does not see bonuses as a way to reward you for hard work, instead they see it as some chicken feed to throw at you so they can say they handed out bonuses. The high turnover rate reflects the lack of benefits, and yet they still haven't figured it out.

    Advice to Management

    Give your IT dept a real competitive bonus structure. Pay for most of their health insurance, which is pretty standard for IT dept. The current benefits structure makes me NOT want to work hard or work overtime. We had record profits the last 2 years mainly due to new products pushed out via overtime by IT. But yet the IT dept is constantly given the cold shoulder.
