  2.

Worked one season as the early morning bagel baker--an awful lot of responsibility for not very much pay.

I worked at Einstein Bros. Bagels full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Enjoyed the work itself. I like working alone, so although starting at 3 am wasn't ideal, I did get my own work area and some quiet time during which to work. It was a good feeling to see the bakery case filled each morning with the fresh bagels and other goodies I had just made.

    Cons

At $9/hour, I was also expected to make decisions about how many bagels to prep for the next day, and how many more to bake off as the day went on. At the end of the day, if there were bagels left over, I was "in trouble" for over-producing, but also in trouble if we ran out of any varieties. And we did not sell day-old bagels. Ever. We threw them all away at the end of the day. Our manager was neurotic about achieving high scores on his regular corporate inspections which would occur periodically. He expected all of us to be just as excited about scoring highly on these inspections as he was, but frankly, I was not enthused to be scrubbing bits of rust off of much baked-on rolling racks so he could have "bragging rights" among the other Einsteins nearby. And all for $9 an hour.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The product line was also too broad. In addition to all the varieities of bagels and spreads, we sold muffins (which took forever to bake, taking up way too much time oven time), and had a whole line of hot and cold sandwiches, each served on their own different style of bread (not a bagel!). It made for a complicated service area and some real time to train both to produce this food and operate the POS system for it. Management loved to pull me out into the front area without training me to either make those sandwiches or operate that POS, which was also very frustrating.

    Pros

Great benefits package, and serve a great product.

    Cons

Managers are required to work a ridiculous amount of hours. At hire managers are given the quality of life speech which is total fantasy. Plan on at least 70 hours a week. If your store is well staffed senior management will pull employees to other stores to help them out; hence the managers that staff their stores, and run them well are punished for doing so, and end up working these ridiculous hours anyway.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is a business, and like all businesses you have to make money, but at what point to do stop abusing store management for the almighty share holders.

    Pros

The people (some of them), otherwise, I cannot think of any pros.

    Cons

Company has really gone down hill in the last several years. Dysfunctional and disorganized from the top to the bottom. Ineffective leaders who only focus on cost reduction, poor communication from leadership and between departments, reactive response to issues that arise rather than being proactive and planning ahead, widespread favoritism, little to no career development or advancement opportunity unless you know the right people, high turnover both at the corporate office and in the field due to poor/negative culture and unrealistic expectations, no real vision or focus that is long-term, pay and benefits are mediocre to poor (no 401K match). Anyone looking to go to Einstein's should think twice about it unless you absolutely need a job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Find leaders who are accountable, visionary, and focused on a long-term strategy rather than short-term growth
-Focus on people - this will help solve many of the companies issues
-Stop changing direction every other day, find a strategy and stick with it
-Stop trying to be something to every type of consumer; focus on core business
-Shift focus from things like marketing to the restaurants/operations

I have been working at Einstein Bros. Bagels full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some people are nice. Company used to be a good place to work. Still manage to produce good tasting bagels.

    Cons

There is so much corruption and gossip that its impossible to work. The Executive team needs to be fired. Company doesn't care and the interim CEO and Executive team are disconnected, slimy and untrustworthly. They have distroyed what used to be a good company. They promote incompetent people and really don't care about the customers in the stores or the employees in the stores. It's all about how much money they all can make.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sell the Company to someone who cares and can actually run the business and treat the employees properly.

    Cons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get qualified mangers that actually like the general public.
