    Pros

    Work-Life Balance (Flex-40 schedule)
    Ok, benefits
    The ability to learn from seasoned professionals (if you ask the right questions)
    Good projects to work on, just need to be executed by the right team

    Cons

    Managers who will lie to your face to keep you productive
    Managers who can be insulting to a seasoned professional while not having the appropriate knowledge about what the professional is working on.
    Less-experienced individuals are praised for small efforts, while experienced professionals are constantly overlooked and slow to promote.
    Lots of turnover in the organization

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Employ upper level managers who know what they are doing
    Do not create continuous layers of middle to lower management, too much overlap and crazy directions from wannabe managers at the bottom.

    Pros

    Work Life Balance (Flex 40 hrs. work schedule 1/2 days off every Friday)
    Community Leader (encourages community work to help others in need)
    Laid back environment in some cases
    Benefits package is okay
    Good place to get your "feet wet" in learning Pipeline and/or E&P.

    Cons

    Diversity is not a big topic (minorities and women seem to be a non-issue)
    Promotions are scarce unless you belong to a clique' of managers
    Certain managers spend after hours with young recruits in bars and sporting events
    Certain managers are disrepectful to individuals if you don't play the game.
    Most managers are inexperienced rejects from other oil and gas companies, some will even pretend to fake their actual skills and qualifications to yield some authority.
    Dumping ground on people who are hardworkers; playground for lazy people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Change some of the managers out and stop with the created "layers" of management. There are 3-4 managers for one team (SCM in particular).

    Pros

    Overall good, kind, caring people and hard workers. Every day is different and there is a sense of community amongst the people in each of the three cities with main offices.

    Cons

    There is no continuity between the various owned companies work practices, especially between similar job descriptions within engineering. Pay grade within an engineering level is the same even though different positions involve much more work and responsibility than others (why would someone take on more work, stress, and accountability and get paid the same). Little room for growth partly because management is stagnant. Good work is rarely recognized while a mistake is never forgiven. People with little or the wrong type of experience are hired/retained/promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Recognition of good work goes a long way with keeping employees happy. Whether it is monetary or verbal. Clearly define the different roles and what is expected and be consistent across all of the owned companies. If one role has more responsibility, work, stress, accountability then that position should be compensated accordingly. Leadership needs to promote good working relationships between the owned companies where right now it's resentment and animosity.

    Pros

    Very understanding when you have family emergencies, treat employees fairly when injured, etc., good severance package, in house gym, 75% match 401k (up to 6% of salary)

    Cons

    Poor communication between levels of management; Most of the employees are long-time veterans, and if you aren't then you have no place in their world, just go make coffee; The upper management preaches hard work and ethics and such all the time, but without any real demonstration that they are on board with those ideas themselves. The upper management ask for innovation and ideas but the lower management will chastise you if you try to suggest changes; If the execs think they can get away with it they will make you work unpaid overtime, make you work unreasonable schedules (ie: work 12 hours a day for 20 days straight, or rotate between day and night 3 times each week, etc).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The departments are like a loose collection of badly managed small businesses. If you want to lead an organization you need to have a real idea of what is going on at the department level. And the carefully worded questioneers asking if the company has been "action oriented" enough really don't give you that kind of information.

    Pros

    El Paso is a great place to work for life-balance. They have great benefits, pretty good pay, and large amounts of time off. They encourage physical fitness and local community contributions.

    Cons

    Working on software in a city that is not El Paso head quarters in Houston means we were looked down upon and ignored. Being a large company, there is no end to the number of people who think they should tell us how to do our job, there is no autonomy. The company seems to like massive layoffs every 5 years or so. Even with these layoffs, there remains a core of ‘old style thinking’ people making decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Professionals can reduce cost and drive up productivity if they have mission goals and little interference. Increase autonomy for these paybacks.
