Not a good place for women

    Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
    Bethesda, MD

ProsExcellent health insurance options, credit union membership

ConsThere was an awful lot of gossip regarding many of the females in the department while I was at EDS. It seemed as if almost every woman was rumored to be fast until she could somehow prove otherwise. I remember one woman who joined from another department said to me, "You've probably heard a lot of rumors about me." I replied, "I make up my own mind about people." She was grateful for that.

    EDS/HP needs improvement.

    Infrastructure Specialist (Current Employee)
    Auburn Hills, MI

ProsProbably, training opportunities were better than most companies. My expereince with job reviews is that it was a waste of my time.

ConsUnrealistic demands on working environment. EDS management would sign contracts that a sane person would run away from. Maybe with HP management things may change.

Advice to Senior ManagementEDS/HPmanagement should sit down and work with the technicians that are expected to do the job. This would give EDS/HP management a realistic idea if the terms of the contract are doable.

Retired 2005 - right time to leave after 23 years with company

    Consultant Senior (Former Employee)
    Dallas, TX

ProsEarly on great company with ample opportunities and real pay for performance (early 80's).
Great culture and some really bright and dedicated coworkers
At time I left it was still a good place to learn business skills and technical skills especially for young first-time entrants to workforce/technology

ConsStarted downward spiral during reign of Dick Brown
Continued into a downward spiral since by continual denigration of management's policy toward employee treatment
Management totally focused on short term gain at expense of long term viability and employee retention
Employee morale very poor at time I left (2005) and appears to have gotten even worse after HP acquisition (from friends who still work there - there number is dwindling).

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to seriously examine core management philosophy in regards to employee treatment. It seems that employees are only considered "cannon fodder" to get the job done with minimal levels of quality for the project at hand. Although management appears to say all the right words, their actions do not support those words.

Better than nothing, but most people could do better

    Systems Administrator (Former Employee)
    Tulsa, OK

ProsThe company was relatively stable and never bounced a check. Vacation time was reasonable and pay was enough to live on. I did learn a bit a first.

ConsStrong emphasis on hierarchy and policy over accomplishing work. Thick layers of bureacracy in the way of getting anything done, and upper management treated employees like numbers. Company slogans loudly proclaimed an emphasis on quality, while a broad array of individual policies discouraged it in favor of short-sighted cost-cutting and CYA.

Advice to Senior ManagementLive up to your proclaimed goals and ideals instead of paying them lip service. Increased quality has a cost, so if you want it that cost needs to be paid. Perpetual quarterly cost-cutting keeps the stock up temporarily, but it leads to a slow death spiral as all of the quality employees leave for better environments and pay.

EDS WAS a great company to work for.

    Technology Consultant II (Former Employee)
    Tampa, FL

ProsEDS, prior to being acquired by HP, was a great place to work. There were plenty of opportunities for growth and education in your field of expertise.

ConsSince being acquired by HP, the workforce reductions at EDS continue. The employees left have tremendous workloads, no morale and the ever looming question 'when will they let me go?'

Advice to Senior ManagementEDS management, I have one question. If you knew in Aug. 2008 what you know today, would you have sold EDS?

    You can do better

    Project Manager (Former Employee)
    Plano, TX

ProsA good number of clients and projects that they can place you on; however it is difficult to a transfer. They would rather lay you off. Management goes behind your back instead of asking you about what you are doing.

ConsThe most political place I ever worked both internally and externally with their clients. At the time they had been working with 7-Eleven for 13 years and they still didn't trust each other.

Advice to Senior ManagementI don't know how this can be done, but clean up the political mess. Try being honest with your clients.

    Not Great

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Lansing, MI

ProsA consistent Paycheck. Decent 401(k) match. Ability to meet lots of people (since turnover was so high). Access to the internet during slow times

ConsLeadership constantly motivating you by saying "at least you still have a job". co-workers were idiots and they were the ones that everyone looked up to.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe happy that HP bought you, it wasn't going to be getting any better anytime soon. Learn to really motivate your employees, not to demotivate them by taking away their pay.
