Once you have mastered your new skill set, go and work in another place to be compensated fairly

Database Administrator (Former Employee)
Dallas, TX

I worked at Electronic Data Systems

ProsGood place for getting training for new skill set

ConsCompensation for your skill set is inadequate

Advice to Senior ManagementBe open to employees regarding how much of bonus is allocated to each business group, employees on the floor usually hear of bonuses but they do not actually get any.

Retired 2005 - right time to leave after 23 years with company

Consultant Senior (Former Employee)
Dallas, TX

I worked at Electronic Data Systems

ProsEarly on great company with ample opportunities and real pay for performance (early 80's).
Great culture and some really bright and dedicated coworkers
At time I left it was still a good place to learn business skills and technical skills especially for young first-time entrants to workforce/technology

ConsStarted downward spiral during reign of Dick Brown
Continued into a downward spiral since by continual denigration of management's policy toward employee treatment
Management totally focused on short term gain at expense of long term viability and employee retention
Employee morale very poor at time I left (2005) and appears to have gotten even worse after HP acquisition (from friends who still work there - there number is dwindling).

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to seriously examine core management philosophy in regards to employee treatment. It seems that employees are only considered "cannon fodder" to get the job done with minimal levels of quality for the project at hand. Although management appears to say all the right words, their actions do not support those words.

You can do better

Project Manager (Former Employee)
Plano, TX

I worked at Electronic Data Systems

ProsA good number of clients and projects that they can place you on; however it is difficult to a transfer. They would rather lay you off. Management goes behind your back instead of asking you about what you are doing.

ConsThe most political place I ever worked both internally and externally with their clients. At the time they had been working with 7-Eleven for 13 years and they still didn't trust each other.

Advice to Senior ManagementI don't know how this can be done, but clean up the political mess. Try being honest with your clients.

So many possibilities, so little accountability...

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Plano, TX

I worked at Electronic Data Systems

Pros* Great name to get on your resume...EDS/HP
* Global assignments
* Will meet truly nice folks...
* Will meet really talented folks...on their way out

Cons* "Seniority" is questionable, at best
* 10+ of experience with the company equates to stagnant thinking, ego-maniacal behavior, poor results...yet can "build relationships"

Advice to Senior Management* Instead of down-sizing the talented, innovative thinkers, who actually produce results...get rid of the dead weight--->folks whom have never worked with any other company and are exceptional in passing the buck, spouting corporate rhetoric and generally taking up space...and oxygen in the numerous meetings they seem to enjoy "leading", which serve as pissing matches, only to leave attendees annoyed, as they will simply have a minimum of 56 email messages (in 60 minutes), upon their return.

HP is sinking this ship fast and furiously.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Plano, TX

I have been working at Electronic Data Systems

ProsLife at EDS before HP was acceptable. Managers, for the most part, were flexible with time off and work hours.

ConsMorale is at an all-time low (and this is post Dick Brown years). EDSers all have a target on their forehead. Even though it was mentioned, "EDS will retain its name and operate as an HP Company," that has changed. It is now HP Enterprise Services. All signs of EDS have been stripped from the building. The parking lot seems to get emptier every day. It's depressing.

Every day at work is just another opportunity to flex that target on our foreheads. I used to think highly of HP but being in their environment and seeing how things are done has really opened my eyes.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think if HP realized the talent they have in front of them, things would be very different ... instead of capitalizing on this, they are flushing it down the toilet.

Suck up to the boss and survive

Information Specialist (Former Employee)
Plano, TX

I worked at Electronic Data Systems

ProsDecent work life balance. Most people dont work so they know that their other jobs or life is more imp than this job.

Cons* Pathetic management. Bosses know how to suckup to their bosses and they expect it from employees. No merit. No consideration for skills, experience and knowledge. Very old school and rigid reporting structure.
* Employees are incompetent, stuck on to old technology, dont share and dont want to share as they fear job security.
* Management makes it worse by laying off their best people. And outsourcing jobs.
* I have seen many career empoyees who daily come to office or work from their homes on the same deadend projects somehow. Hats off to their suckability.
* bottom line..useless company

Advice to Senior ManagementU have no hope.

Turn out the lights...

Manager (Former Employee)
Plano, TX

I worked at Electronic Data Systems

ProsGood people on the team; benefits are OK, at least for now before becoming same HP. I enjoyed working for my team and felt I was supported by first-line managers. Also enjoyed working with teams on a global basis.

ConsThe problem was with upper management. Most acquisitions are not good for the rank and file and it's annoying when management tries to pretend all will be better, more opportunity, etc. Why pretend? HP has ruined the company. The first 5% salary cut was hard, but at least it was across all of HP and EDS. The extra 10% cut in April was only on EDS in the US--not fair and did not stop the layoffs. Most people were livid, but had little choice because of the bad economy. As soon as times are better, those few left will also hit the road.

Advice to Senior ManagementNone to give-it's over.

EDS used to be great... HP is destroying us.

Infrastructure Specialist (Current Employee)
Dallas, TX

I have been working at Electronic Data Systems

ProsThe people I work with a are great, my job is challening and I enjoy what I do. My direct management is very flexiable with my scheduling and allows work from home when needed. This is a big positive in my book. There are not many positives now though since HP came in.

ConsEDS used to be a great place to work before the merger with HP. Since that time HP has been coming coming through with an axe and chopping EDS apart. It is not the same place it was when I joined 12 years ago, or even 1 year ago. The first big downside is HP came in and cut everyones base salary by 5%. Even though the company reported a profit. To pour salt in that wound all US based EDS employees got an addtional 10% pay cut. Again even though EDS is making a healthy profit. This has put quite a hardship on my personal finances as my salary is my total compensation. And my moral and drive to give 100 and even 110% effort is in the tank. HP touts is it a pay for performance company but nowhere is my compensation plan does it state what goals I need to meet. I am in a billable, client facing role and work my butt off nights and weekends and I am not holding my breath on getting any type of performance bonus to make up for the paycuts.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemeber the little guys, the ones out in front of clients eveyday, the ones who do all the real work for the company which allows you to get your healthy bonus and stock options. I have no issue with large executive bonus, but it is a slap in the face when my total compensation gets cut by 15% and you still get ungodly amounts of money in your pockets.

Joe Eazor cuts the workforce pay, while getting over 400% bonus.

Senior Infrastructure Specialist (Current Employee)
Plano, TX

I have been working at Electronic Data Systems

ProsA variety of things to do and learn. If you work hard you can go through the ranks You are surrounded by smart people and in most positions you can learn from those people. In addition, you can also mentor othes. The people (non-management) are exceptional people. To work with them is a privilege.

ConsBelow average compensation. Joe Eazor cuts the workforce pay, while getting over 400% bonus. Even Hurd, Livermore and the rest of these execs get big bonuses over and over, while cutting the people who deliver by 5%, 10% and 15%. If you look at their total compensation package, their pay was cut by less than 1%

Advice to Senior ManagementStop worrying about your bonuses and worry about the people who deliver.
