    A good start

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Gardner, KS

ProsThis was a good place to start working. Tried to be very team orientated. I liked the yearly review and the bonuses that came with it.

ConsSome people are angry, its hard to deal with people everyday who do not love their jobs. You definitely feel like you are just a number after a certain amount of time.

    Project Manager

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Overland Park, KS

ProsCompensation, work environment, professional coworkers, work / life balance, high tech projects, work was evaluated in two categories annually (either you did the job or did not).

ConsVery political, constant organizational and process changes, departments don't work well together, not much opportunity for advancement if you're not on the fast track.

    Limited communication kills employee productivity.

    Product Development (Current Employee)
    Overland Park, KS

ProsEmbarq is a very flexible work environment with a focus on achievement, not hours - meaning that management is open to flexible hours and time off for family issues.

ConsWe are currently going through a merger, and the flow of information about how it will affect jobs is very limited.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore communication and better coordination between departments at all levels would help people accomplish their jobs and limit unnecessary work.

Great company for experience and growth, not a place to stay long term.

    Customer Service/Sales Representative (Former Employee)
    Jefferson City, MO

ProsGreat benefits. Flexible scheduling when time is needed off. Great sales experience. Great oppertunity to make a lot of money if you're good at sales.

ConsThe customer service provided by the company to it's customers needs work. Irregular scheduling from time to time. Mandatory overtime.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your act together. Don't change things every month. Customers don't like to be deceived. Bait and switch advertising just doesn't work.

Company with opportunity, but too slow and greedy to react and invest in the future.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Overland Park, KS

ProsRelatively good pay, and opportunity to progress in the company

ConsSlow moving, unprogressive. Getting anything new done is like moving an ocean liner with a tricycle

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't be so near sited and focused on short term revenue returns. While your concerns has been about access lines and increasing revenue - you have lost "customers", and therefore any opportunity you have for growing the business. Also there is too much management and not enough action. Reduce your management work force and empower your SMEs to more effectively advise, drive and ultimately make decisions. Hold them accountable - and you will get much more done, in less time, with less people.

    Average Company

    Application Developer (Current Employee)
    Overland Park, KS

ProsThe pay scale is decent. The benefits Embarq offers are better than average. If you get in the right group, you may get to work with some interesting technologies. The working conditions are pretty good although some of the building in Kansas City are getting dated. The flexibility at Embarq is one of the nicer things about working there. Depending on the team you are, you can work at home a decent amount. As a developer, the equipment you get to work with is not the latest technologies, but if you know the right people, you can get upgraded to something that works.

ConsThe incompetent management is one of the worse aspects of Embarq.. They are bent on getting as much of IT as possible moved offshore at all costs. So, if they think they can get away with it, your team will go too. The team I am on has about 60% offshore, so we are forced to work with staff from India that is very hard to understand and work with. We are also expected to have meetings very early to accommodate them. Many of the senior architects in IT know very little and are unable to lead and set directions for the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a look at what you are moving offshore and compare that to some competent developers onshore.

It was a great learning experience, growth opportunity and opportunity to excel financially.

    Retail Sales Consultant (Former Employee)

ProsEmbarq offers many different avenues for personal and professional growth. If you stretch beyond your comfort zone you may have the opportunity to be a part of managament, continued education, customer interaction and community events, to name a few.

ConsEmbarq is a large company, so like most large enterprises, C-level vision can get skewed or miscommunicated throughout the organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementI believe that Embarq is a great company to work for and should continue to hone the skills of talented, dedicated individuals through challenging goals and keeping lines of communication open down to the 'ground level'.

Has turned into a bad place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe job itself is fun and challenging. Lots of various products to work on and support. Some training is provided allows professional growth.

ConsSince the merger with CenturyTel it has been downhill. Management seems clueless about how the organization should be run and how the new organization structure be created.

Advice to Senior ManagementPick an organizational model and stick to it. Some parts of the company are still working in a regional model and other parts are on a national model and it's causing a lot of confusion. Select managers based on their skills and ability to lead.
