    Pros

Descent pay for the area. Had some descent people to work with, however most have been let go due to political agenda or voluntarily left (running). Also, people who have been there longer get the final say whether it is logical or not. This explains a lot of the problems they have had and currently have.

    Cons

Too much political agenda, poor scientific practices (try the same approach to fix a problem over and over and they wonder why the method does not work). Management is ineffective, deceitful and just bad at their jobs. CEO pretends to care, but as long as the company makes a profit, no effective change from him or senior management.

Also, I find it amusing the number of positive ratings and vague reviews (i.e. "Fast growing company making great strides" made me laugh out loud) for this company went up soon after management discovered all the negative reviews on Glassdoor.

    Advice to Management

Does not matter, management gets a lot of good advice, but nothing every really changes at this place. Once you have a major competitor in the anthrax vaccine/treatment department, that will be the end of Emergent BioSolutions.

    Pros

Salary is decent and benefits are good.

    Cons

If Executive Management does not like what you say, you will be retaliated against. They ask you to be truthful, they have an open door, spill your guts in these 4 walls, but when you do, they retaliate against you. You can only get ahead if they like you. Does not matter what your performance has been. If you are not on their list or even a man for that matter, you will not go far in this company. Heck, they do not have any females on the CEO Executive team. Only 1 female Board member. HR is not a high performer. They are not there for the employees. They definitely do not do anything for the employees. They listen to what you say, but the Executives are the ones that rule. Still other departments lead by intimidation. The Senior leadership of the department put fear into their employees. You would think you had signed up for the military. This is a very toxic work environment. Not a great place to go everyday and spend 11 to 12 hours of your day. They do not believe in a work / home life balance. If you have a blackberry, you are expected to return emails at all hours of the night. They want to cut expenses, and decide to cut 15 people from the Headquarters location. Yet they will approve people flying all over the place for a 1 day meeting. Departments are having yearly retreats in various places all over the United States. If you sincerely want to cut your expenses you would cut stuff out like that, not lay off the very people who you say are the backbone of your organization. It is very toxic to work here. Everything is political.

    Advice to Management

Instead of listening to your Executives who are not the people doing the work, start listening to your employees. They are the backbone of the organization. Start living the Core Values that you like to say you have.

    Pros

VERY GOOD BENEFITS AND LOTS OF COFFEE AND SNACKS

    Cons

The HR department is a total joke. People working in that department don't even treat fellow employees with respect. The person in the employee's relations department constantly humiliates the employees in the company. There is no respect from employee relations whatsoever. Fellow employees from other sites constantly apologize for this person's actions.
If you are in the "Clicks" you can stay if not they had soon see you go. Better yet they pick and choose who to lay off. It is a man's world there. Recently 12 people were laid off, most were women, some were single family mom's with 1-4 children and a new mom.
Personally the bullies I felt were the worst. They were constantly humiliating you in front of upper management to the point you wanted to throw in the towel. Some managers have no idea how to manage. They look the other way when there is a problem or go to their bosses and cry for help or to get rid of that person.

    Advice to Management

Start from the top and regroup. No way can a company survive with two one person telling a very upper management person to get rid of certain people when he couldn't do it himself. They are a company that preach Core Values and have all sorts of Culture Teams but all they do is talk the values are thrown out the window and the Culture Teams are just free lunches. Being a former employee there I found you could not confide in anyone they would just go tell someone else and the ball would go rolling. They are very unprofessional people.
All upper management should go to some classes on how to treat fellow employees. I recommend offsite classes the ones on site are a waste of time.

    Pros

I made some of my best friends/acquaintances while working here

    Cons

Work-life balance is generally terrible. Benefits are only good if you negotiate when you first start. Expect to be over worked and under-paid. Expect to be given the opportunity to show your skills and then not be recognized or appreciated for it. If you are motivated enough to try and forge your own way and career expect to be shut-down, lied to, then placated and they want you to be happy about it.

Overall, they will continue to spout this ideology of how they want the company to be. Which if it were even remotely possible to become a reality would benefit everyone involved. However, they regularly institute policies (both formal and informal) the discourage progress, discussion, or any sort of constructive criticism. The executives and managers are only interested in their year end bonuses and not actually working toward the company goal of 'protect[ing] life'

I would recommend staying unemployed or in your current position before coming here.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend starting over from the top down. A place this toxic needs a complete overhaul.

    Pros

My commute was great. Close to good lunch options. There are no positives about the company itself.

    Cons

Absolutely disgusting middle and upper mgmt. Men dominate this company and the woman are bullied and treated less than. No work life balance, toxic people and environment. Very low pay. Lacks direction. You will regret working at Emergent.

    Advice to Management

    None. You can't change a person's mindset.

    Pros

Initial pay is great - which is good, because you will never get a raise.

    Cons

SVPs are cruel to employees. Employee retaliation is so frequent that people have become catatonic to the abuse. The executive group seems annoyed when employees discuss the negative culture the executives foster.

    Advice to Management

The Board of Directors should get involved and remove anyone at the CEO table, anyone with the title "Site Head" or equivalent.

    Pros

Good pay if you play the game right. Some decent people in the corporate office but few and far between.

    Cons

No personal growth unless you are a favorite of a certain EVP.
Bullies, liars, back-stabbing, horrible culture at the corporate office. I am sure satellite offices were better. Core values were thrown out to staff but upper management did everything secretly to undermine any progress on this front, protecting the worst of the worst.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of upper management including Executive Chairman of the Board and start fresh.

    Pros

Compensation and benefits are fair. Annual bonus is nice. Talented people. Insurance benefits, 401k plan, life insurance, vacation, holiday pay. Summer hours.

    Cons

Toxic and unethical environment. Members of senior management each have their own agenda which breeds in-fighting and turf wars which adversely affects company growth. Outside the box thinking is not encouraged or rewarded. Attempts at encouraging Core Values is propaganda at best and a failure.

    Pros

Pay is above average. Benefits are good. PTO is good if you ever had time to use it.

    Cons

Respect is non-existent. One department calls their boss Dr. Arrogant and senior management looks the other way. Promotions are based on politics and nothing more. People are extremely overworked - 60-70 hour per week norms and no vacation. Supposed flexible work schedules is a joke when senior managers discuss the comings and goings of cars from the parking lot and shame people publicly for leaving. Private family time is non-existent (a blackberry is handed to you and you are expected to take it to the bathroom with you.) There are Senior Managers afraid of the admins because HR will drop a hammer on the manager for the slightest complaint from the admins.

    Advice to Management

Decide how you want to run your business and start making personnel decisions to which support your business philosophy. Get rid of the baggage of disrespectful, rude, uncaring management and controlling, manipulative employees.

    Pros

There is a talented pool of employees. Compensation is fair.

    Cons

The senior management doesn't value their employees. There are a handful of qualified managers at this company but most are playing dirty political games, scared to advocate for their employees, not adequately educated or experienced, and overall make it near impossible to fullfill their company mission. There are several examples of employees reporting unethical and harrassment offenses to Human Resources without any action. There is virtually no development. They will tell you what they have to, to get you in the door, but then you are bound to do only a version of the job that your (ever-changing) manager will determine is appropriate. There are several employees that live the company's core values (as stated on a poster) but there are also instances where employees have been punished for following the core values leaving employees in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" environment. Employees with limited educational background and poor performance are often promoted while those more qualified are left stagnant in their roles for years at a time. This company is all about who your friends are. Decisions are made based on personal reasons and not on performance or qualification. Regardless of what you are told your job is during your interview, or how great they make the company sound, run as fast as you can to another opportunity. The only place Emergent will take your career, is backwards.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employee feedback, take the survey results seriously, hire ethical leaders who are qualified to perform their roles, hold Human Resources and Management accountable.
