    Pros

There is a talented pool of employees. Compensation is fair.

    Cons

The senior management doesn't value their employees. There are a handful of qualified managers at this company but most are playing dirty political games, scared to advocate for their employees, not adequately educated or experienced, and overall make it near impossible to fullfill their company mission. There are several examples of employees reporting unethical and harrassment offenses to Human Resources without any action. There is virtually no development. They will tell you what they have to, to get you in the door, but then you are bound to do only a version of the job that your (ever-changing) manager will determine is appropriate. There are several employees that live the company's core values (as stated on a poster) but there are also instances where employees have been punished for following the core values leaving employees in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" environment. Employees with limited educational background and poor performance are often promoted while those more qualified are left stagnant in their roles for years at a time. This company is all about who your friends are. Decisions are made based on personal reasons and not on performance or qualification. Regardless of what you are told your job is during your interview, or how great they make the company sound, run as fast as you can to another opportunity. The only place Emergent will take your career, is backwards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employee feedback, take the survey results seriously, hire ethical leaders who are qualified to perform their roles, hold Human Resources and Management accountable.

Worst Years of My Life at Emergent

I worked at Emergent BioSolutions full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Heath Benefits - Which were needed due to the extreme stress of the job. I used to have panic attacks nearly every day working in the toxic environment. I had horrible insomnia, panic attacks at home, depression, suicidal ideation, and even vomited at work from stress. I really wanted to die.

    Cons

    EXTREMELY TOXIC ENVIRONMENT

Managers would undermine each other instead of working together for the common good; there were cliques of managers who would gang up on other managers with each other.

Good managers would leave the company which made things even worse.

    Unproducitve meetings

Yearly reviews were a joke; employees should have been able to confidentially review management. Then again, Corporate probably wouldn't care if they knew the truth about management.

Human Resources was a joke--never any real assistance to me. They truly didn't care about the welfare of the employees. Most times I was afraid to come to HR with any concern about management as I knew they would disclose my confidential information back to the manager and make life even worse.

The company had very high turnover--and for good reason!

Since I've left, most of the few "good apples," have left the company. Such a shame, these people had been there for years with so much knowledge and talent. I'm happy they've left like I did. No kind-hearted person with a conscience deserves to be in that toxic h#ll hole.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company needs an entire overhaul. I honestly don't know how this company could ever repair itself and make things good for employees. Maybe it should be Government owned and hire only the good employees and fire everyone else. If an outside source from the Government came in and took surveys from employees that were confidential, they would be apalled at what they read. Survey would have to be in paper format and not through a computer system where comments could be tracked to which employees made which comments.

Managers, try caring about your employees and doing your job as a manager! Your job is to make sure your employees have the resources to accomplish company goals.

I have been working at Emergent BioSolutions full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The training opportunities are okay; company is growing; talented employees; comp is pretty good.

    Cons

Very political; senior management always playing the blame game; senior management doesn't know what they are doing; no direction or solid plans; workload is often heavy; everyone is looking for a new job; the culture leaves a lot to be desired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to make decisions and stick with them; do something to improve the culture instead of talking it to death; treat employees with RESPECT (executives need to learn what that means--the stories are shocking).

I have been working at Emergent BioSolutions full-time

    Pros

Rapid promotional opportunities for the ambitious.

    Cons

-HR. Answers to no one and is playing Judge, Jury, and Executioner for the company.
-Three highly dedicated people with single income families to feed were fired with no warning for not following a company policy no one is taught to take seriously.
-Tried to get away with not paying the employees for their last day of work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your HR under control. If they had the decency to take personal accountability for doing their job adequately, instead of terminating people without real cause, three good workers could have saved their jobs, and now you wouldn't have entire shifts of talented people abandoning your company.

Worst place to work in my professional career

    • Comp & Benefits

    • Culture & Values
    • Career Opportunities
Former Employee - Anonymous Employee  in  Gaithersburg, MD

I worked at Emergent BioSolutions full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There were talents and expertise within the employees, so you can learn something among your peers, other than that

    Cons

    1. Yes there were talent and expertise within the employee, however, senior management failed to utilize and recognize these talents and only deal with things as they please. Bureaucracy, favoritism, a hierarchy culture are just some of the things you'll see in their work environment. You can be the dumbest guy in the group but if you play your cards right, you can be promoted and get every single recognition and awards for doing nothing.
    2. After stating #1, people with talent and expertise will be belittled and used to the max. You will do all the work, but you will never get the glory or threaten to be let go.
    3. HR is non-existed and they never dealt with any reported ethical issues. Employees are afraid to raise any flags because if you do, you're immediately targeted as a trouble-maker and retaliated. They keep tabs on how many cases you report, but never resolve any of them, so the victim will just be victimized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Over 50% of management personnel either don't do their job or don't know anything about their job. No one takes responsibility or ownership to follow-up. Yes you meet to try to resolve problems, but it all ends at the meeting and nothing carries out.
Lastly, respect your employees! They are afterall, the ones who took the bullets for you when things go downhill. At least have the dignity to treat them with respect...

    Pros

    Good benefits and free parking

    Cons

So dysfunctional and toxic for one's well being.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Restructure. Get rid of those who do not know what they are doing (but some how still managed to be egotistical). Senior Management do not respect each other and proudly announce it so.

I worked at Emergent BioSolutions full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There is a wealth of talent and expertise within the employees who have been there the longest. Sadly, even those employees are starting to leave the company as well.

    Cons

Horrible work environment, executives constantly left the company (by their own choice). No work/life balance for managers and directors. High stress levels among employees at all levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There should be 360 reviews so employees can evaluate unacceptable management behavior. Human Resources Dept. did nothing to help numerous employees with concerns regarding management behavior.

I have been working at Emergent BioSolutions full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good benefits, pay and bonuses, summer hours if you aren't too busy working which you probably will be. Fun people. Good area for Montgomery County dwellers.

    Cons

Treat employees unfairly, only promote those who play the political game regardless of skills and work ethic. Unrealistic timelines. Way too much bureaucracy, no change comes easy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get an expert in to review the problems with communication. Only way to increase the stock price is to spend money on new products with commercial value.

I worked at Emergent BioSolutions full-time

    Pros

    good compensation and pleasant employees

    Cons

Senior management is incredibly incompetent with leadership and management skills, and human resources is very open about defending them. Turf wars of sr. management instill fear among the employees, as many have left the company with the first opportunity that arose. Politics, not performance, is what sr. managment emphasizes in evaluation of employees.

I have been working at Emergent BioSolutions full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Compensation can be good if you stay with the company over a longer period. Otherwise few come to mind.

    Cons

Impatient, aggressive management. Employees expected to work 24/7. If you play the political game well you will get promoted regardless of talent. Senior management often deals with complex situations unprofessionally with anger and tantrums. Timelines are always being shortened to the point of being completely unrealistic and unachievable. A lot of people reach VP and SVP level who really shouldn't. Project management run things completely - even if you are functional head they will overrule you!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more realistic with timelines and have a better system in place when it comes to selecting senior management. If most of the company can identify the really bad senior executives, why is the C-level so blind to this? Also, be more realistic with investors regarding opportunities and time lines. Perhaps then the share price might go up, rather than the always repeating pattern of over-promising yet never delivering.
