I have been working at Emergent BioSolutions full-time

    Pros

Challenging, great coaching and great people. Pay and benefits are solid. Efforts to improve culture are evident. Fast growth overall.

    Cons

No prioritization of work - takes on more than is realistic and does not support resources to achieve goals. Work/life balance is poor - rewards long hours and total dedication over planful and balanced execution.

    Advice to Management

Give good performers the time and prioritization to be successful where they're needed instead of piling on until they break.

Upper management was not supportive of personal goals and growth within the company.

    Pros

The benefits are descent and the PTO was excellent.

    Cons

The pay is not very good.

    Advice to Management

Your employees are an investment. If you want it to mature, you have to allow it to grow.Give the employees a little time in each week to explore different and new challenges at work. If work is only for work then people will never be willing to give more of themselves and you will not have dedicated employees.

I have been working at Emergent BioSolutions full-time

    Pros

CEO is trying hard to improve and grow the company. CEO is worth 4 stars in my view. Ever changing strategic direction and reorganizations means you get to gain experience in many aspects of existing and new businesses. My manager is competent and is doing a good job.

    Cons

Always changing strategic direction -- company does not seem to know what it wants besides growth in revenues and net income. Frequent re-orgs and exploration of new businesses. HR is wedded to strict guidelines on compensation and promotions despite employee's performance. You need X years of experience to get to the next level, but real biotechs like Genentech had a 30-ish years old CFO promoted from within. This is the millennial age -- stop sticking to baby-boomer 1960s HR practices. 1-2 stars for HR practices. I heard not all departments have competent managers, but I'm fortunate not to have worked with them.

    Advice to Management

Need to figure out the strategic direction of the company. Several years back it was to be a high growth biotech/oncology company, then after failure of several compounds (common in biotech, but may also be due to bad acquisitions) the company tries to increase shareholder value by cutting "wasteful" R&D. Then it became a spec pharma company. Not sure what it will be next. Management should figure out what Emergent's strengths are and continue developing them. Is it biodefense? Yet there has not been any new approvals besides expanded indications for BioThrax and hopefully building 55. Surely all that grants and contracts money has to lead to something? HR needs to adapt from the 1960s baby boomer management practices to the GenY/millennial practices in 2010+. You can tell that management in HR clings on to outdated practices and has no clue about dealing with Gen Ys/millennials because it appears many of Emergent's employees are baby boomer or gen X age. Some Directors/VPs/SVPs are getting it and I respect them in working to understand the changing times, but HR appears to have no clue. We are competing with other biotechs and tech companies for talent, not mature industrial manufacturing companies with a workforce looking forward to retirement.

    Pros

Work on interesting, meaningful products to protect and enhance life. Opportunities to develop and learn. Focus on improving company culture. Flex time opportunities and good bonus opportunities.

    Cons

Company has been focused on changing and improving culture for 5 years. Change can seem slow at times.

    Advice to Management

Continue simplifying processes, removing red tape, and removing roadblocks to getting real, meaningful work done. Move on past the founder of company - sometime he still seems to have too much influence in a culture eroding way.

    Pros

Great people, a strong focus on culture. Company is growing and changing, which yields a lot of room to branch out for individuals who want to get involved in new things.

    Cons

Though there's a lot of talk about culture, there are still issues. Pay is below expectations, and promotions are fairly difficult unless you're already at a fairly high level. Different departments have completely different work experiences - if you get a good manager, you'll have a good work environment. With a sub-par manager, it's easy to be taken for granted and never given a chance to grow.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the culture shift not just at the upper levels - there is positive change, but it's not company or even site-wide. Some groups are really "getting it", while others still have empowerment/employee respect issues. Don't be afraid to reward hard work.

    Pros

Some great incentives for employees. Company culture initiatives. Decent benefits Company has a lot of potential to grow, not to mention they have the anthrax vaccine market monopolized so there is certainly some job stability in that regard.

    Cons

-Management is largely inexperienced. -Several departments are constantly understaffed and overworked. -Turnover rate is high. Retention rate is low. You will spend 3 months training a new staff member and they will proceed to walk out the door just as they have completed enough training to work under less supervision. -Amount of mandatory meetings needed to figure out why no work is getting done. -Favoritism. It doesn't matter if they don't know how to do their job, they've been with the company 25 years! -Salary is not merit based. If you were hired in at the high end of the 'allotted pay bracket', don't expect a raise for a job well done. Regardless of your excellent performance review. -Little upward mobility or room for promotion in some departments. -Training may be made available, but your supervisor will shift priorities the day before and you will not be able to attend. This will happen for every training. They will then send out surveys asking why staff members don't take advantage of training opportunities. -Hard work is rewarded with increased work load, more responsibilities, less time to complete tasks, and no pay increase. Those who don't work as hard are not reprimanded, but instead it is the responsibility of their co-workers to encourage them to pick up the pace.

Oppurtunities to grow and learn are everywhere in this company. Benefits are great. Merit increase/bonuses are fair.

    Cons

People are over-worked. Not a lot of consideration for work/life balance. Management does not get along and is not shy to admit it.
