I have been working at Emeritus Senior Living full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great atmosphere. Great people. With many growth years, there have been lots of opportunities to learn and advance. Communication is good both within and between departments. Employees are treated to great gatherings, parties, and events.
Great location next to the Olympic Sculpture park and Seattle Center. Many take advantage of walking along Elliott Bay, or working out at the company sponsored membership at Rain Fitness across the road.
Very low turnover. Everyone is happy working here so few people leave.

    Cons

With the growth of the Seattle office, one or two departments have become more fraternal and less cooperative with other teams. It's now common now to hear "That's not my job", instead of "Hang on, let me see what I can do." Hiring for open positions can be biased in favor of team member than someone from another department, or someone from outside the company.

I have been working at Emeritus Senior Living full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Amazing positive and laid back environment/culture, Free food and drinks regularly (stocked fridges) managers tried to take care of employees, provided regular, consistent feedback and even top level management had an open door policy.

Awesome coworkers, flexible schedule, monthly parties to celebrate birthdays, new hires and anniversaries, boozy Holiday party. Almost impossible to get fired. Some departments allowed dogs in the office.

    Cons

Too many employees didn't pull their weight and nothing was done. Other employees asked to pick up the slack but never ramifications for the lazy one. We had several in our department who clearly to advantage of the managers trust by disappearing for hours on end and then didn't get their work done.

Too hard to move up and around unless you've been there for several years. Low turnover in most departments so openings were few and far between. I regularly asked my boss for additional work that wasn't available because others with longer tenure had already taken the projects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shouldn't have merged. The employees loved working here and the environment you created.

Wonderful culture here at Emeritus! Emeritus takes care of their residents, employees, and vendors.

I have been working at Emeritus Senior Living full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The culture, the people, the location of the corporate office. Emeritus has now merged with Brookdale so you can no longer work for this great company.

    Cons

Salaries are low for the Seattle market. Now that the company is part of Brookdale, I would not suggest this employer to a friend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice to Emeritus would have been to Increase salaries. Advice to Brookdale would be to communicate better within the corporate office (between departments) and to the employees in the communities.

    Pros

Emeritus' culture and people. It was truly a family like atmosphere and it was a privilege to be a part of it.

    Cons

Brookdale's culture and employees. I have never seen co-workers/peers treat each other like this. Finger pointing is the norm when somthing goes wrong.

I have been working at Emeritus Senior Living part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The pros of this job is that you get to help the elderly. It makes such a difference in the lives of some of them who have no one. It's truly a gift to share your compassion with these people, if that is genuinely your calling.

    Cons

This facility's management does not appear to have the best interest of it's residents or employees in mind. I fail to see the compassion, care or concern!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice would be to take time to do what's best for the residents and employees. I rarely see any of management actually engage with the residents or take time to ask just what it is that they could do to make their stay their more pleasant.

    Pros

The senior living industry can be very satisfying in the sense that at some level every employee has an amazing opportunity to help seniors. There are positions within the senior living industry for professionals of all sorts of experience, be it IT, medical, accounting, business development - and more.

While at Emeritus, there were many opportunities to be a part of amazing projects and there are so many amazing people that work for the company, at every level of the organization.

    Cons

    Many...
It's difficult to hear about so many family members complaining about the care of their loved ones, even if there seems to be more people happy than unhappy, it is still difficult and makes you wonder what is going wrong with the organization. It's also difficult to hear so many employees complain about being paid poverty level wages, while also complaining about the facilities.

Communication isn't that great between managers and subordinate at the corporate level. Manager more concerned over own career than empowering subordinates.

This place is fine to work if you're not the family breadwinner.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    None.

I have been working at Emeritus Senior Living full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

It's a corporate environment, so you are more likely to receive timely work reviews and increases. Professional employees. Some enjoyable perks to be had. there was plenty of advancement opportunites, varied work-so could be interesting

    Cons

Can be micro managed at all levels. locked compensation company wide(during Emeritus), meaning if you deserve more than a 3% increase it was difficult to get.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your focus about your customers--the elderly--and less about your sales quotas.

    Pros

The management style is very team oriented. There really is no micro-managing and the continual trainings keep us up to date on the latest laws and government actions.

    Cons

The commute is a bit of a drag; however the view from the balcony of the building makes it worth it. The Seattle skyline is definitely a job perk.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay better! People are doing a lot of hard work to make the company a success. When an employee has devoted years to the company...pay them for their loyalty.
