Amazing place to be as a student, and pretty neutral/comparable to other places as a professional environment.

Resident Assistant (Former Employee) Boston, MA

ProsPeople are open-minded and friendly. They're committed to creating safe spaces for discussion and inclusion. Everyone is passionate and values creativity. You'll feel like you're doing work that matters.

ConsTons of red tape. Honestly, that's the only real thing. Great work environment, but whenever something's wrong, it's nearly impossible to know whose job it is to fix it and go to them. It can take months to bring about change, and sometime the people up top may not give a good reason for why they decided not to change anything at all. Happens in a handful of departments, not all.

Overall good work environment; very creative staff, faculty, and students.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsNice work environment; some opportunity for growth; very good benefits (vacation, tuition, etc); small college makes for a community like feel; new president has a lot of innovative ideas to improve culture & several other aspects of the college; good location in Boston

ConsSalary could be more competitive with other area colleges; could have better maternity/paternity leave benefits/more flexible work options (telecommuting, etc)

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Great benefits, facilities and culture

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Boston, MA

ProsThe college itself is hip, fun and clearly instills a hard-working culture. That translates very well into the work life as well. The health benefits are good, pay is fair, and overall its an exciting place to work with friendly staff.

ConsTypical higher-ed bureaucracy. Sometimes it takes a long time to get things done or approved. Seems to be a hard place to move up because higher level positions are rarely open.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue the lower-level staff more. Offer advice. They really look up to you.

Emerson students are a unique, driven, intelligent bunch--loved working with them.

Adjunct Faculty (Former Employee) Boston, MA

ProsEmerson students are very focused and passionate about their studies. Great full-time faculty to collaborate with. Great location in downtown Boston.

ConsYou can't always control when classes are scheduled. Managing student expectations can be stressful. As a teaching grad student I wasn't given faculty library privileges.

Advice to Senior ManagementTeaching as an adjunct can be uncertain from semester to semester. My replacement was asked to teach before I was asked whether I was interested in continuing in my position, even though I had received positive reviews from students and other faculty.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Emerson College is a great community to work in

Vice President for Public Affairs (Former Employee) Boston, MA

ProsAt Emerson faculty and staff work cooperatively to enhance educational opportunities and experiences for students. There is a shared sense of mission and purpose and a belief that "we are all in this together." I've worked at five colleges and universities, and Emerson is the best of the bunch in terms of the work environment and ethic.

ConsIf you are not interested in communications and the arts, Emerson may not be the best fit for you. There's a certain quirkiness to some aspects of the college and the way things are done. There is also a bit of insularity in some quarters and a notion that thing have to done "the Emerson way."

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is significant room for improvement in the operation of the Human Resources Department and in providing opportunities and venues to facilitate informal faculty-staff interaction, especially given that Emerson most live a significant distance from campus.
