I worked at Emerson full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Fair salaries, decent opportunities to grow

    Cons

company depends too much on low cost labor manufacturing

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stick to best cost producer strategy rather than lowest price, don't trust Chinese and Korean joint venture partners to NOT stonewall productivity numbers to inspire early buy out, then actually hit previously "unachievable" targets and beat the US firm on competitive bids not long after the exit is complete

I have been working at Emerson full-time

    Pros

Salary is good, fun benefits in many of the departments. Group is fun to work with. Challenging work at times. Company rewards those who work hard and stay with them long term. Good work-life balance, travel expectations are low for some positions.

    Cons

Not many training opportunities. Expects relocation throughout career, must be very mobile. Old school benefits, who still offers a pension? Company lacks diversity (of race, gender, and age) in many of the U.S. locations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hard to recruit top young talent with the benefits package that has not been updated in many decades. Spouses work (or like to) in the 21st century, hard to relocate a family w/o company support.

I have been working at Emerson full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Overall very well managed company that is stable, promotes from within, had only 3 CEOs since 1956. Although a US based company, more sales outside US. Places ethics very high.

    Cons

Divisions operate in silos. There is hardly any collaboration between them.

    Generally good, work life balance

    Cons

Huge differences in culture and compensation across different operating units
Salaries will lag the industry average over time
Reluctance to let poor performers go
Company tends to work in silos across the business platforms

I have been working at Emerson full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Work-Home life seem to be very balanced in this company (and even more-so depending on your boss).
    Vacation accumulates fairly quickly.
They like to keep individuals in house, it is easy to move up the ladder here.

    Cons

The HR staff here moves slower than any HR group that I have ever worked with before!
The salaries at times can seem to be a little less competitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be willing to make sacrifices to keep solid employees. There have been many good employees leave for an outside company because Emerson would not meet some simple requests.

I worked at Emerson full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to grow and advance in all areas of the business. Generally promotes from within. Strong mentoring program and great educational support.. Training is available to all employees and encouraged. Passionate people at the leadership level and very goal oriented. Facilities across the globe are fantastic and the corporate campus in St. Louis is particularly beautiful with multiple cafeterias and gyms. Work/life balance is for the most part maintained though travel requirements for leadership roles can be taxing.

    Cons

As with many large companies Emerson can be slow to change and some of the creativity is missing that can be present in smaller firms. Compensation is comparable but can be slow to increase.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more input from all levels of the business when setting company goals, there can be a perception of an ivory tower.
