    Pros

Very friendly and fun workplace. Lots of freebies (swag). Chance to run into celebs and network. You're in the Biz. You get to work two other jobs to make a living.

    Cons

Yes, it's a good place to get your foot into the door if you want to get into broadcasting. However, chances to move up for a better shift are slim to none. If you are the creative type, management will often shoot down every other idea after talking to "sales" or budget reasons. Its business model wants to be at the the forefront of technology and edgy, but still drags its feet in the 20th century ideas so in essence, corporate radio. I know this is a joke in radio but the pay compared to other major markets is well below standard.

    Advice to Management

Step up and be managers. Getting the advertising bucks is only half the job, do air-checks and keep the standards high and consistent. Just because clients have the money to buy themselves a job on air, doesn't mean they need to be on air. Show some self respect.

    Pros

Great owner, and a great media company overall. I never felt like I was working for one of the "big" media giants that treated their employees like a number.

    Cons

Middle management was changed, and leaders from those "other" media companies were brought in. The atmosphere changed, and the "Emmis Way" was gone.

    Advice to Management

Make sure your middle management is in line with YOUR vision for the company. If you don't want your employees feeling like just a number, then make sure the managers you hire won't treat them that way.

    Pros

Tons of information to learn and grow your career in the radio and entertainment industry overall.

    Cons

Too many associates afraid to engage management about how they can make better use of there skills.

    Advice to Management

Fresh ideas, young minds coupled with seasoned talent is the recipes for success.

    Pros

Talented people. Ability and encouragement to develop your career and capabilities. Flexibility in growth path.

    Cons

Declining industry and tight budgets. The nature of radio involves significant career risk.

    Advice to Management

Keep promoting a strong culture and developing talent. Look for opportunities to leverage your team's skill sets beyond terrestrial radio (without simply copying Pandora or trying to "save" radio).

    Pros

Great company to intern for. Every employee is very friendly and willing to help you with anything. Very flexible at working with your school schedule. Interns are encouraged to job shadow in various different departments, which is pretty cool. I interned in the spring and got to help the marketing/promotions department with SXSW. Great learning experience. Gives you good insight of how a radio broadcasting company functions.

    Cons

Opportunities for employment at the end of the internship are pretty slim. Internship is also unpaid and you must get school credit in order to intern for Emmis. Other than that, everything else is pretty great.

    Pros

Working in the corporate HQ building has it's perks. It was a beautiful building during my time there. Great employees. Fun atmosphere.

    Cons

In my time there, the company struggled with cash flow so I saw some creature comforts go away....nothing that messed with my day to day work life, just perks.

    Advice to Management

Spend time with everyone, not just sales people!

    Pros

Collaborative vibe without the sense that moves are dictated top-down. Local programmers are given the freedom to be local programmers. Navigational tools to succeed are there.

    Cons

Not a lot of positions within the company to grow "to", with just a handful of markets and 20ish stations. And winning tools exist, but there could always be more.

    Advice to Management

Honestly, in today's business climate, I wouldn't ask for anything to be done differently. It's not as great a place to work as a decade ago, but I still think it's an industry leader, with good folks who are always looking for new opportunities to forward the company, and share in its successes.
