    Great Internship experience

Former Employee - Intern in Burbank, CA
Former Employee - Intern in Burbank, CA

I worked at Emmis Communications as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Great laid back environment. Actually learn a lot about radio on the entertainment side a well as the business side.

    Cons

Some times the interns have no work and nothing to do. That is when you should make your self known to all the other departments and make yourself stick out.

  2.

Former Employee - On Air Host in New York, NY

I worked at Emmis Communications part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It was one of the best places I ever worked! Colleagues were very supportive of one another. The stations were very professionally managed, and led by very focused and successful upper management. Expectations were clearly explained, station plans were very organized and executed very efficiently. Staff rarely called off work, high morale, and fun social events for coworkers where we could comfortably let our hair down, on occasion.

    Cons

I honestly cant think of any, other than it was unfortunate that our station's format flipped after several years of being a heritage format/station, resulting in many extremely- talented individuals being let go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None...other than to bring back the Smooth Jazz format ?? (Note: the last year I worked for Emmis was actually 2008 (not 2009) but the dropdown did not go back far enough to 2008. Our format flipped in Feb 2008.

I have been working at Emmis Communications full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Incredible freedom, great work atmosphere, tons of fringe benefits, management that inspires evolution and embraces change, 100% commission, great culture (11 Commandments of Emmis Communications), have a finger on the pulse of the city's entertainment scene, make connections all over town, management is easy-going

    Cons

Earning potential has a ceiling, 100% commission, necessary job tools (phone, car, etc.) not covered, industry becoming more and more competitive (radio share is decreasing), "skip paychecks" twice annually, very difficult business to get started in (start below age 25!)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Local management needs to be able to confront issues with managers and employees more often

I have been working at Emmis Communications full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Emmis Communications is a world wide publicly traded company that lives their 11 Commandments. This is a company that rewards it's employees for hard work and vision.

    Cons

They expect you to be "on your game" and break barriers....the future is something that Emmis Communications isn't afraid to venture into.

    I worked at Emmis Communications

    Pros

In a cut throat world of disposable people, Emmis strived to be fair and respectful even when tough chopices had to be made. They aren't afraid to try new things and instead of being punished for failure, you received praise for the attempt. I always felt I knew the people I was working for and their values, ideals and beliefs, even if they were based far away.

    Cons

Being a smaller company, you could quickly run into a wall that made advancement difficult. They have also fallen into the cycle of chasing Wall Street which devalues individual effort and focuses on stock price alone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't fall into the trap of the "big guys" and lose the culture that made you unique.
