Difficult, but in a good way.

Programming Intern (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsInterns are given a great deal of responsibility. Good supervision. Fast paced and fun. Great opportunity for communications/journalism college students.

ConsThe number of responsibilities can be overwhelming

Parttime Emmis Radio On Air Host

On Air Host (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsIt was one of the best places I ever worked! Colleagues were very supportive of one another. The stations were very professionally managed, and led by very focused and successful upper management. Expectations were clearly explained, station plans were very organized and executed very efficiently. Staff rarely called off work, high morale, and fun social events for coworkers where we could comfortably let our hair down, on occasion.

ConsI honestly cant think of any, other than it was unfortunate that our station's format flipped after several years of being a heritage format/station, resulting in many extremely- talented individuals being let go.

Advice to Senior ManagementNone...other than to bring back the Smooth Jazz format ?? (Note: the last year I worked for Emmis was actually 2008 (not 2009) but the dropdown did not go back far enough to 2008. Our format flipped in Feb 2008.

One of the BEST Media companies to work for!

Senior Account Manager (Current Employee) Saint Louis, MO

ProsEmmis Communications is a world wide publicly traded company that lives their 11 Commandments. This is a company that rewards it's employees for hard work and vision.

ConsThey expect you to be "on your game" and break barriers....the future is something that Emmis Communications isn't afraid to venture into.

    Radio Sales

Account Executive (Current Employee) Austin, TX

ProsIncredible freedom, great work atmosphere, tons of fringe benefits, management that inspires evolution and embraces change, 100% commission, great culture (11 Commandments of Emmis Communications), have a finger on the pulse of the city's entertainment scene, make connections all over town, management is easy-going

ConsEarning potential has a ceiling, 100% commission, necessary job tools (phone, car, etc.) not covered, industry becoming more and more competitive (radio share is decreasing), "skip paychecks" twice annually, very difficult business to get started in (start below age 25!)

Advice to Senior ManagementLocal management needs to be able to confront issues with managers and employees more often

Still one of the true gems in the Radio industry.

    Manager (Former Employee) Phoenix, AZ

ProsIn a cut throat world of disposable people, Emmis strived to be fair and respectful even when tough chopices had to be made. They aren't afraid to try new things and instead of being punished for failure, you received praise for the attempt. I always felt I knew the people I was working for and their values, ideals and beliefs, even if they were based far away.

ConsBeing a smaller company, you could quickly run into a wall that made advancement difficult. They have also fallen into the cycle of chasing Wall Street which devalues individual effort and focuses on stock price alone.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't fall into the trap of the "big guys" and lose the culture that made you unique.

    Government Affairs and Research

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsEvery one that I have worked with was/is extremely nice, and outgoing. Very helpful, and the mood is light. People work hard, and play hard at this company. I never traveled due to my job description, but that is normally not the case. There are always free promotions, ticket giveaways, free concerts, and the opportunity to meet musicians/athletes.

ConsA lot of the employees are not very organized. There are meetings, for meetings, about meetings. The pay is average, and not really much room for advancement. However, most media companies are struggling right now.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
