Very smart people, good business, can be too political and feel like a cozy club for the management favorites.

I have been working at EnerNOC full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible with time off, kayak use in the harbor, amazing facilities, great young group of people.

    Cons

Overworked. It is expected that you answer your email all hours of the day and every request is urgent. Worked during my paid time off without a thank you. Long grinding hours with little back office support causes high turnover rates. The health care is awful (really it's the worst I have ever experienced).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get help in the back office. Sales is expanding and so should Finance, Legal, Contracts, Energy Markets etc. With the globalization of the company the continuing lack of back end support will cause some of your best people to leave because of burn out and cause major errors that could potentially lead to financial miss calculations.

    I worked at EnerNOC

    Pros

Fairly positive experience. I had the opportunity to lead projects in my first month. Definitely a work hard, play hard environment.

    Cons

Work hard can be taken overboard. You should not be expected to work 24/7. Has a bit of a "boys club" atmosphere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers, listen to your employees and let them know they are valuable. Give them time off. With that, they will work harder when on the clock.

I have been working at EnerNOC

    Pros

Exciting industry; fast-paced work; always changing; upbeat attitude; young employees; smart workforce

    Cons

Constant re-orgs and changes in management; incompetent senior management can't see past the ends of their own noses; lots of smoke and mirrors; unreasonably high-pressure sales and marketing organization; beholden to Wall Street; salaries don't match the level/amount of work you do; raises and bonuses are rare

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get in touch with your employees. The 11th floor (executives) has no clue what's happening on the 3rd floor (everyone else). Simply telling people they are doing a great job but not rewarding them with pay increases/bonuses/promotions is ineffective. Your top and mid talent will continue leave the company if you do this. The company has way too many VPs because you made up jobs just to hire your friends. You don't even vet your friends before you hire them as VPs. You make anyone below director-level interview for months and months and months on end but VPs are seemingly appointed at random.

Unique opportunity to work for a "clean tech" leader

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Boston, MA

I have been working at EnerNOC

    Pros

EnerNOC has a remarkable collection of very smart people, and is recognized as a leader in the "clean tech" sector -- they're also one of the few profitable companies, so have much more stability than many companies.

    Cons

It's not a great place to work if you aren't smart, and don't want to work hard -- the expectations are high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you don't lose the "small company" mentality as you grow -- need to make sure that the people at the "bottom" really understand the mission.
