EDF has an excellent culture and meaningful projects.

    Oceans Program (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsEveryone is down to earth, very intelligent, and passionate about what they do. If you care about the environmental space, there are a multitude of practice areas to learn about.

ConsUnfortunately the pay is low because it is a non-profit. Additionally, there is not a lot of room for upward mobility because they hire many experiences professionals as upper-management. It's a great place to start out between graduation and graduate school.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe culture is great and management has been great.

    Ups & Downs

    Financial Analyst (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsRelaxed, fun company, that works on a mission to help the planet.

ConsBad communication among programs & managers, low moral, HR needs work, very hard for advancement within organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep your team in the loop...

Great internship experience in the Oceans Department

    Oceans Intern (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsEDF works on some amazing projects that are relevant and truly have the potential to impact ocean management. I feel that the Oceans Department's goals are realistic but also large enough to make a difference. The people in the San Francisco office are passionate, creative, and supportive; it was a delightful work environment.

ConsDifficult to obtain a full-time job in the organization.

Great, motivated employees--may make too many concessions to business

    Intern (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsGreat staff (very motivated and well-meaning)
    Reasonable work hours
    Rewarding work and projects
    Welcoming atmosphere for newcomers
    Relatively little attention on hierarchy

ConsThis obviously depends on where you fall on the liberal-conservative spectrum, but: I'm a pretty moderate environmentalist and often felt that EDF was making too many concessions to please its business partners. Some of the steps businesses took to reduce emissions were almost too minor to matter.
I'm not sure what the opportunities for growth were; I got the feeling they hired from outside EDF more than from within the organization
Salary--low for entry-level positions (and San Francisco is an expensive city...)

    Nice organization to work for

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsPays well. Get to work independently. Learn a lot about helping organizations improve energy efficiency. Proactive staff. Good for the environment.

ConsHave to pay for expensive training up front. Reimbursed later.

    Great EDF Climate Corps Fellowship

EDF Climate Corps Fellow (Former Employee)

ProsThe EDF climate corps fellowship gives graduate students an excellent opportunity to affect change at major companies and organizations around the country

ConsThe application process was very drawn out and slightly disorganized. More communication between the submission of the application and the first interview would have been helpful.

Great work environment with capable collegues that are all passionate about many facets of the environment.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIt is a very professional work environment and your colleagues are always willing to share and collaborate their independent work.

ConsManagement is always willing to listen but not often willing to move on policy which sometimes leaves them behind the curve. Overly cautious but nonpartisanship can be helpful later on.

Great organization that balances competing priorities for the planet and people.

    Program Associate (Current Employee)

ProsVery pragmatic, yet innovative organization to work for. Seeks to accomplish large-scale environmental change with as many partners as possible. Strong organizational culture. Supportive work environment. Upper management/executives are open and receptive. Strong leadership throughout organization.

ConsFor new hires, it can be tricky to integrate into and navigate the organization. Programs and departments operate in silos and there is less cross-departmental communications and coordination.

    Great place to intern!

    Legal Intern (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsVery friendly people, easy going atmosphere, many opportunities to learn about many different areas of environmental protection and preservation, incredibly knowledgeable staff, nice area, all day free water and coffee, very flexible schedule.

ConsTasks for interns should be more well planned. I sometimes felt like my supervisors we're struggling to find meaningful work for me to do. However, this may not be the same for all supervisors. Computers are ancient, don't have much space, and can be very slow.

Fun, intellectual, energetic place to work where everyone is passionate about what they do.

    Coordinator (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsThe Fun Committee, The annual all staff retreat, Working with some of the smartest and most hard working people around (definitely no slackers), Being part of a great machine working towards an awesome social cause, Being part of an ethical company that values employees, And the fact that EDF is growing provides great opportunity for creating your own career path. Also EDF alumni go off to do some great things.

ConsWith rapid growth some folks are let into the org and they don't necessarily have a passion for the environment but rather a passing interest. This sort of dilutes the passion-factor a little. Also some folks are promoted to manager status when they're not fully equipped to manage people.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou'll have less turn over from the younger generation if there were more set career paths that allow people to advance professionally in a systematic way.
