    I worked at Environmental Defense as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Nice and very smart colleagues;
    Interesting projects that enable you to learn a lot during the internship;
    Good work/life balance, no extra work after office hour.

    Cons

    Intern manager in office is not very helpful;
    Pay is relatively low;
    Limited cross-departmental communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay more to interns. Their contribution is considerable but their pay is less than TA job at school.

    I worked at Environmental Defense as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Lots of resources for domestic work; Great team of experts; good location and office environment;

    Cons

    unequal pay for interns; too many program managers that stand in the way; few chances for promotion; poor communication of future direction from NY HQ

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The org. needs more young people to move the org. into the future. - promote from within and hire your interns (and pay them to show them to indicate value)

    I worked at Environmental Defense as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Everyone is down to earth, very intelligent, and passionate about what they do. If you care about the environmental space, there are a multitude of practice areas to learn about.

    Cons

    Unfortunately the pay is low because it is a non-profit. Additionally, there is not a lot of room for upward mobility because they hire many experiences professionals as upper-management. It's a great place to start out between graduation and graduate school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The culture is great and management has been great.

    I worked at Environmental Defense as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    EDF works on some amazing projects that are relevant and truly have the potential to impact ocean management. I feel that the Oceans Department's goals are realistic but also large enough to make a difference. The people in the San Francisco office are passionate, creative, and supportive; it was a delightful work environment.

    Cons

    Difficult to obtain a full-time job in the organization.

    I worked at Environmental Defense as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Great staff (very motivated and well-meaning)
    Reasonable work hours
    Rewarding work and projects
    Welcoming atmosphere for newcomers
    Relatively little attention on hierarchy

    Cons

    This obviously depends on where you fall on the liberal-conservative spectrum, but: I'm a pretty moderate environmentalist and often felt that EDF was making too many concessions to please its business partners. Some of the steps businesses took to reduce emissions were almost too minor to matter.
    I'm not sure what the opportunities for growth were; I got the feeling they hired from outside EDF more than from within the organization
    Salary--low for entry-level positions (and San Francisco is an expensive city...)

    I have been working at Environmental Defense

    Pros

    Pays well. Get to work independently. Learn a lot about helping organizations improve energy efficiency. Proactive staff. Good for the environment.

    Cons

    Have to pay for expensive training up front. Reimbursed later.

    I worked at Environmental Defense as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    The EDF climate corps fellowship gives graduate students an excellent opportunity to affect change at major companies and organizations around the country

    Cons

    The application process was very drawn out and slightly disorganized. More communication between the submission of the application and the first interview would have been helpful.

    I have been working at Environmental Defense part-time

    Pros

    It is a very professional work environment and your colleagues are always willing to share and collaborate their independent work.

    Cons

    Management is always willing to listen but not often willing to move on policy which sometimes leaves them behind the curve. Overly cautious but nonpartisanship can be helpful later on.
