All they care about are the numbers

    SPA Coordinator (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

    ProsBartering within the club
    Free membership
    Flexible hours
    No micro managing

ConsThey expect so much from you when they pay you literally minimum wage
They dont care about the spa at all. The only time they so care is when they ask you for the numbers
    Expected to work all holidays

Advice to Senior ManagementWe understand that members go to Equinox to work out and not for the spa but as licensed massage therapists and estheticians this is our career. Management should really take care of all departments because everyone in the spa gets discouraged and feel unappreciated. You should really learn how to value your employees and not just think about hitting quota.

Equinox made me do it! And I quit.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFree gym memberships but black out times.

ConsDoes not care about employees. Management rules through fear of your job. The turnover ratio at corporate is like 40% and 80% in the clubs especially sales and pt. For corporate only directors get a bonus and difficult to get promoted unless your fluffing the right vp or higher.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour employees are the face of the company and the only differential between you and the competition is our customer service. You can learn something from Danny Meyer and soulcycle.

Cool Gym to work in, Great members, Area/Regional Shop mgmt. unethical...

The Shop Sales Associate (Former Employee)
    Dallas, TX

ProsMembers are very cool and facilities are innovative. Equinox has established a brand identity that is very appealing and attracts celebrities, people of influence. The P/T Dept. has many outstanding personal trainers who, at least in the Dallas clubs, are dedicated to Fitness and personal improvement. Upper level Shop Corporate (NYC) staff are/were mostly down-to-earth, positive and constructive. If you're into Fitness you will love your free membership! The Shop carries a unique mix of fun athletic and casual wear that is fun to sell. Developing retail clients is easy as the same crowd was in the gym all the time. GM was fair (though I can't say he was big on personality). The latest PTM, FM, Group Fitness manager and Pilates manager, from my vantage point, were excellent.

ConsShop MOD, Area and Regional management was ethically challenged and consistently struggled to demonstrate management skills. Area manager would resort to slander and libel to fire those she didn't like and also would cover for staff she liked that slept on the job, showed up hours late/under the influence or didn't do their job. Shop became a total "Girl's Club". If you were not a sorority "sis" or "girl" who put your female co-worker's feelings above what was best for business you would most certainly be fired. Denial/Retaliation from Area and Regional Shop mgmt. was common if concerns were raised. Instruction from Area manager often opposed Regional manager. Often Area mgmt.'s decisions were based on emotion/personal motives rather than what was good for business, client retention and sales. The member experience and company mission statement were conflicted by rigid, confusing and punitive Shop policies. Commission was dependent on achieving a Shop goal but lazy associates/managers with poor sales were tolerated. Manic calls, emails and texts were common on days off and most were entirely unnecessary.

Advice to Senior ManagementGreat gym and P/T dept. but you ought to take the Shop Dept. seriously too. Pay more to get good, or even decent, Shop managers and see more than just a handful of shops hit their goal! Don't create a competitive sales environment with aggressive goals and then allow Area/Regional Shop managers to punish associates for being aggressive in getting sales. Should be seen as a business not a Kindergarten. Fire managers who employ retaliation. Insist employees of the on-site café be background checked rather than label Equinox staff who are uncomfortable working around felons as "disruptive". Stand by your 24 hour hold policy on merchandise! Don't allow special associates to hold piles of new merch. for days on end and then retaliate against eager staff who actually sell those items to members begging for them in-store! Consider hiring Regional Shop managers who will manage rather than send the same tired "Sell, Sell, Sell" emails while ignoring training and significant Shop and staff issues. Strongly consider drug-testing managers and staff who are responsible for inventory, cash and member credit card info. Hold quarterly Gym-wide meetings/events to build enthusiasm for the club. Most staff I knew sadly had a negative view of Equinox.

warped sense on how to train people and they play favorites however you do learn helpful skills and training/business

    Personal Trainer (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsNice facilities, learn more about fitness than other clubs

Conscompensation, long and random hours, favoritism, they want you to train their way or no way

Advice to Senior Managementhelp the team as a whole manage their business and stop catering to a handful of people. Allow trainers the liberty to know their clients needs and goals.

Too much focus on numbers and irrelevant performance measures, not enough focus on employee retention

    Personal Trainer (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

Pros-Excellent education for trainers and networking opportunities within the company. Great work/life balance for trainers

Cons- Less focus on education after initial EFTI, more emphasis is placed on building your business on your own. Extremely high turnover rate

    Very Disappointing

    Personal Trainer (Former Employee)
    Scarsdale, NY

ProsGreat Learning experience for new trainers- a four month learning program called EFTI- but a lot of it is somewhat B.S., where the main focus should be on becoming a master at programming for your clients.

ConsToo much competition from other trainers, horrible pay structure- $8/hr for floor shifts where you are cleaning up like crazy making everything "picture perfect". Private one on one training pay rate for most is $25-28.50/ session. You make decent money if you reach tier 3 status and hit bonus(42 session/ pay period) or your paycheck gets cut in half. God for bid a client gets sick or goes on vacation and you do 40 sessions for the 2 week pay period instead of 42 needed for bonus- paycheck cut in half. Tier 2 $28.5 hit bonus + $12 per session, Tier 3- $33.5 hit bonus + $13/session.
They say if you do what you are told to do and follow their protocols you have a great chance of succeeding- B.S.- I was there for about a year and saw 20 newbies like me come and go- 2 people made it- thats 10%. You really have to be special, and best if you do group fitness too- but now they are not allowing newbies to do group fitness.
I also thought this was a gym that i could grow with and be there for years, but during my time there, i saw 3 veteran trainers leave(5+ yr of experience there) and another 1-2 ready to leave.
With all personal training jobs- Best if you get into a brand new club.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire High school or early college students to keep the floor clean and have the right amount of trainers for your client base so all of your trainers have a good chance of being successful. Get rid of this crappy bonus structure and have set pay no matter how many sessions one does. Have EFTI focus more on specific program design, going over best exercises and templates to use for certain type of clients.

    For beginners

    Skincare Therapist (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

Prosfun environment, free membership, flexible with schedule

ConsBad pay, lack of visibility for the spa (members arent even aware there is a spa) which means no business for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to step up there marketing for the spa. They leave it up to the therapists to bring in business.
