The Career of my Dreams

Health and Wellness Coach (Tier IV) (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Equinox Fitness full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThis is a place where someone with a passion for health and wellness, and a true commitment to helping others can thrive. In 6+ years with Equinox, I have received priceless guidance and support, while increasing my income by 10-20% every year I've been employed here.

ConsThis is not a company for people seeking guaranteed income and easy work schedule. My weekly hours range from 45-60 hours. I start as early as 5:30am and have stayed as late as 9pm. If being in a Health Club environment and catering to the needs of others is not your thing, this is not the right place for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement does a great job of recognizing and promoting talent from within. The hiring process could be more selective, as there are many who quit within 6 months because they are not ready for the rigorous workload.

Great experience. Lots of opportunity for growth if you work hard and contribute

Senior Management Level (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Equinox Fitness full-time for more than 8 years

ProsAbility to be creative
Opportunity for growth and development
Hard work and talent is recognized
Good benefits package
Pride in the brand

ConsSalaries tend to be lower than you would expect
Not a 9-5 Mon.-Fri. type of job

Advice to Senior ManagementMost departments could do a better job training their people for their respective jobs. Salaries for certain positions (front desk, maintenance, floor trainers) should be better to reduce turn-over. I think the new president will be a huge asset to the future of the company.

Excellent

Front Desk Agent (Former Employee)
Vienna, VA

I worked at Equinox Fitness part-time for less than a year

ProsClean area, high-end, good compensation

ConsYou are dealing with members who are celebrities, ceos, and other wealthy individuals. So you need to go above and beyond what is expected of you. If you don't you will be let go.

Advice to Senior ManagementPraise the lower staff a little more - especially if they handled a situation very well

Results for members and for employees but just like fitness you must put in effort to get results

General Manager (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Equinox Fitness full-time for more than 5 years

ProsAn Innovative, experience driven, high performance company. Equinox invests in it's employees, they consistently drive training and education, support growth from within and create a high energy culture that is addicting and almost impossible to leave. I'm grateful for the time spent in this company and still use the core principles and values they taught everyday.

ConsNot a company for someone who has trouble taking feedback, you will need thick skin.

This is a highly detailed, experience driven company. If you are not willing to put as much effort into your personal presentation as you are your work then do not apply. While this company will always support your growth with training and education, your personal presentation will be a factor just as much as your performance. I personally didn't mind dressing the part, but I watched it determine the fate of others.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind a way to curb the gossip. Knowledge of company moves and decisions spread like wildfire and most of the time through senior management.

The delivery difference between senior managers was not consistent. Some directors made you want to work for them because they always worked for you. Others ruled with iron fists and made you want to run in the opposite direction.

The process improvement, performance management, education, training and incentives were challenging and motivating. The people are just as unique and state of the art as the clubs. The culture was addicting and competitive. Overall, it was always a positive and high energy environment to work in.
