I worked at Esterline full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This review is for Advanced Input Systems in CDA, Idaho. They have some great employees and managers. For teh most part I knew what was expected of me and was able to complete my work in 45-50 hours per week. They are very open to advancement and growth. I tried out program management for a while and they actually let me go back to engineering with no questions asked.

    Cons

The benefits are horrible. Salary is mediocre but not bad for the area. Performance bonus based on goals so lofty that no one could ever attain them. Health insurance is non existent. It was free but it showed. $5000 deductible with a HSA that they didn't match anything on. In today's day and age of Obamacare you could probably find something better on the open market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

better health insurance if you want to hold on to workers.

I have been working at Esterline full-time

    Pros

Great environment, great people, learned a lot. Would recommend to anyone looking for a solid internship experience that will challenge you daily.

    Cons

The only negative would be just the nature of the work. A lot of time was spent dealing with the companies product lifecycle management system which at the time was not as efficient as it needed to be in order to truly serve its purpose.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Honestly, I loved the management.

    Pros

You get a lot of experience working with a lot of different aerospace companies.
    Employees are very nice.
Not a lot of repetition in what you work on.

    Cons

Working a contracting job does not give you a lot of in depth experience in what you are working on. Also it is very hard not having a lot of job security. Not a lot of room to grow technically or management wise currently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Upper management is fine.

    Pros

Big company, set hours to work, employees laid back. Creativity and hard work is appreciated, good communication with senior managers. Great CEO.

Employees who work for decades not to much of advancement. Politics, but that's everywhere the same.

    I worked at Esterline

    Pros

It has the benefits of working for a small company but it also has the benefits of working with a large corporation.

    Cons

Aging workforce, "this is the way we've always done things", some lack of leadership, not a lot of development opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create more development opportunities for employees. Update work processes and get younger more innovative people into the workforce. Become a great place to work.

I have been working at Esterline

    Pros

Very relaxed environment. People oriented. They will give you ample opportunities to grow and do better. Recognizes people continuously for good performance.

    Cons

Communication is a challenge. Most of management does not know how to deal with conflict positively. Too many emotions and people taking things personally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to play to people's strengths and recognize when people are in the wrong roles. Need to flush out the folks that pull the company backwards.

I have been working at Esterline

    Pros

One of the few companies that still offers a real pension. They don't feel like they own you like some other companies do. They would never dream of bothering you when you are at home unlike other companies who have no compunction in calling you at 4AM in the morning.

    Cons

The health insurance they offer is only good for catastrophic conditions. There are instances where senior management has very little knowledge of what people that work for them do.

Promotions are often given suddenly with no opportunity for peers to interview for the position and give rationale as to why they deserve the promotion.

Seniority within the firm seems to be rewarded with promotions. Sometimes this is wise but other times it seems like it's used as an excuse for upper management to not have to think too hard about who actually deserves the promotion and who is the most competent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seniority does not necessarily impart competence. The Peter Principle is alive and well at Esterline.
