  1. Great place to work!

Current Employee - Software Engineer in Redwood City, CA

I have been working at Evernote full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Ridiculously amazing food. Lunches are catered. Monday through Wednesday has rock solid food that ranges from great to amazing. Thursday and Friday is catered by the same company every week and the food ranges from mediocre to good. Baked goods on Tuesday and Thursday and a happy hour every Friday.

    - Solid product. Evernote is used by millions of people all over the world. It's great to work on a product that so many people love and count on.

    - Great coworkers. Generally, my interactions with most people here are very positive; I wouldn't mind hanging out with Evernoters on the weekend.

    - Good work/life balance. People come in at a reasonable hour and leave at reasonable times. Yes, there are the occasional crunches, but it's very rare for me to work more than 50 hours in a week.

    - Good engineering. I can imagine it varies from team to team, but the team I'm on has a solid codebase. Code is reviewed, unit tests run, and automation tests run. My team members are solid engineers, which helps me become a better engineer.

    - Great location. If you don't want to commute into the city, Evernote is great since it's located in Redwood City right off of 101. If you do commute, there is a shuttle from the city and/or you can get a GoPass so you can ride for free on CalTrain. It's a 15 minute walk from the Redwood City station.

    Cons

    - Very easy to put on a lot of weight.

    - Some nice perks have been eliminated since I began. Namely, housecleaning and the electric car subsidy (people already on the subsidy would continue to receive it).

    - There is a gym on-site but it's not really well-equipped. There are a few treadmills, elliptical machines, dumbbells, and a smith machine, but no power rack. A gym subsidy would be nice.

    Pros

Exciting product with a group of smart, helpful, professional and great individuals. I enjoy the work and believe the product will go far.

    Cons

As a start-up growing up, the resources and departments are slim so you wear many hats and take on multiple projects (fun but lots of work). The plus to that is that you get lots of experience, but having priorities in order is critical.

    Advice to Management

Communicate the plans for supporting the growth with the people and department development to go along with the goals for growth.

The house cleaning benefit was canceled.

    Pros

    • Getting to work on a product that I have used for years, and which genuinely helps make millions of people’s lives more productive.
    • Extremely talented and passionate colleagues who are eager to make the product a success.
    • Great perks including daily-catered meals, weekly massage & boot camp, commuter shuttle to SF, yearly Caltrain pass, on-site fitness center, unlimited PTO, and a $1000 vacation subsidy to encourage you to actually take time off.
    • The company has recently given a lot of thought to how to make a freemium model sustainable, which was long overdue and speaks well for the company’s future.
    • There is plenty of room to find your niche and excel.
    • Managers are flexible and want to see you reach your full potential.
    • Competitive compensation for the Valley.

    Cons

    • At times there is a lack of focus on the core product and the execution of company objectives needs streamlining.
    • The company has been experiencing high turnover, which hurts moral, but is not unusually for a start up as they mature.
    • Long commute from SF.

    Advice to Management

    • The CEO does a great job of representing the company to the public, but at present he also leads the company operational. Separating the visionary from the administrative work is needed to continue growing the brand while ensuring a high quality product.
    • Focus on improving the core functionality of the product and streamline the execution of company objectives by delineating a clear hierarchy amongst the product teams.

    - Friendly, talented peers
    - Flexible schedule
    - Great office environment and atmosphere
    - Great benefits, nice free lunches

    Cons

    - Like other tech companies, the work space is open. If you want your own private space, it's not so easy to find.
    - The location, Redwood City, is a little bit difficult to commute for the people living in SF and South Bay.

    Pros

Working with very inspired, talented, passionate people who are out to change the world. Probably the best team I’ve ever had the privilege to work with.
An opportunity to contribute to an amazing set of products and services that I love and use every day.
Entrepreneurial environment that has encouraged breaking rules and trying different things.
Excellent brand value, outward communications, and messaging.

    Cons

Growing pains like most other startup-type organizations. People and projects can come and go which can be upsetting to the uninitiated.
Running fast has at times impacted performance of existing products and recovery from missteps has been slow.
At times management has been unclear communicating goals, objectives, and priorities for the company.

    Advice to Management

Keep going. Evernote is a transformational company with a great opportunity to become a lasting presence in the lives of millions for many years to come. This is noble work.
Learn from every experience, even when things do not turn out as planned, and communicate this knowledge throughout the organization.
Continue to challenge assumptions about what a tech company is and can achieve. You’ve done this in the past and there is no reason to back away.
Ruthlessly protect the trust customers have placed your products and services as you continue to innovate.

    Pros

    - Many of the employees are not just here to make some money. We want to make a visible impact to our society by proving a new kind of work tool.
    - Most of employees are quite helpful and respectful to each other. They will try hard to do right things.
    - Work environment is excellent. Many complements I hear from people who have visited here. Also, the company accommodates flexible work style. Many of us work from home as long as it fits well with your task.
    - All employees are treated as a trust worthy adult. Minimal formality.
    - Management is open to new ideas. They are trying hard to keep startup minds up and running.
    - The cloud service market is in its infancy. Evernote has been offering an unique value to the market. It has great potential down the road.

    Cons

    - You can be spoiled by a free lunch. Evernote cares about food (and drink). Sushi lunch is the best!
    - Sometime things can get confusing. It’s inevitable, because we try to implement new ideas all the time.
    - We face changes and challenges every day. If you are not comfortable with deal ing with them, it may be painful.

    Advice to Management

    - Hiring an mature COO with a track record will help us tremendously to scale this business up.
    - I think some employees may be a bit misplaced or overlooked, although they perform fine. Giving them a right task and responsibility, you may find even greater talent in them.
    - An effort has to be made to make a progress. However, such a effort won’t guarantee an immediate progress. Patience is a key.
