Great entry level opportunities. Burn and low pay relative to other cities.

    Pros

Loved working in teams, great culture and work space.

    Cons

Moved to Indy from Ann Arbor. Indy was not too exciting and little other tech employers. My partner and I ended up with great jobs in Chicago with much better pay and benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be great to have a larger Midwest corporate presence in Chicago.

    Pros

    Some bright employees, good technology

    Cons

Zero leadership, no communication, some commission checks take forever to collect, no accountability. Fake culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend less time worrying about image and operate a business. Cut costs, not employees. Stop spending when you are not making a profit. Lifers made $ on SFDC purchase - newer folks did not. Those who did are the leadership who no longer care about operating a business.

    Pros

I really enjoy my coworkers and being Orange. I like the downtown office locations and the free food and drinks. The culture has kept me here but the pressures are mounting and the uncertainty of the company make it hard to stay. Pay has been pretty good. ExactTarget Connections is always fun but is ton of work.

    Cons

Work life balance has gotten really out of whack the past year and a half. I do more and more but then get more and more to do. It seems like if I don't check my email at 10 at night I am considered a slacker, very hard to have a life outside of ExactTarget and nearly impossible to keep up with management constantly changing directions.

I am the only minority on my floor, ExactTarget is overwhelmingly Caucasian probably 98% in the US offices, which is kind of depressing. Also it's very difficult to get promoted as a female above a director level, nearly impossible so I am considering switching companies to either Angies List or Interactive Intelligence as I hear they are better about promoting diversity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think its unfair you don't hire more minorities and rarely promote women.

    Pros

I get to travel a lot for work, it is good and bad, I am not home a lot but I do love to travel and I love having a company pay my expenses. Really good pay but 65+ hour work weeks are really starting to get to me when I hardly get to see my family.

    Cons

2-3 years ago this place was an incredible place to be, now, to be honest not so much. I have liked working here for the past 3 years but a lot of the things I previously loved about ExactTarget are no longer. It has lost its small company feel and these days it feels very cut throat and corporate, lots of backbiting and bickering among employees which creates a very tense and uneasy work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Relax, things will get done, people CAN work more but at what cost?

    Pros

The perks are great, I actually like the 'Orange Culture', plenty of new things to learn.

    Cons

They do a great job at marketing, both for the client and for themselves. The job sounds a lot better when they are pitching it to you than what the reality is. The hours are inconsistent and mostly border between long to really long. This is not the place for a person with a family. There is little to no direction as to career development and we hear about the same plans for improvement every few months but they never come to fruition. I feel like I have tried hard to like it here but I don't think I will last much longer. Even if you really want to do great work, unless you suck up a lot and work around 60 hours a week, you won't go anywhere. It's probably just like every other company, and if it is, I need to rethink my career choice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just reward those that are willing to give up seeing their kids, or who don't have any, for the sake of getting more paperwork done. There will always be more work, but good employees won't stay forever if they aren't treated right. Focus on team building and improving processes rather than just creating more.

Becareful leaving a good job for this company, 30% of new hires don't make the cut the first year.

I worked at ExactTarget Marketing Cloud full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Lots of parties/free food, young and energetic company, decent pay, nice downtown location.

    Cons

There are a lot of good things about this company but the company is so into itself they forget to treat people humanely if that makes sense. They hire, hire, hire but if they dont like you and you don't fit exactly into their "Orange Culture" employee mold they will get rid of you within the first year and completely forget that you are a person who has kids to feed and that you probably left a good job to go to work for them.

At least 30% of new hires dont last longer than a year, it might be more now, it's kind of disgusting really but they know what they want and aren't open to free thinkers. They "say" they want "leaders" but its quite the opposite, they want followers.

The culture they have set up is too much, it like doesn't even feel real, like slavish, cultish 24/7 devotion to this Orange ideal, it's like these people think they are gonna work there for life and nothing could ever possibly change. Im not a troublemaker I am just a realist, so what did they do, they got rid of me within the first year. They don't do layoffs so do avoid bad press they just find a reason to fire you. It's pretty hard to deal with, you see backdoor corporate bullying at its finest at ExactTarget.

It's a fun and cool place to work at times and if you fit and if they like you you'll probably be there for a while, but if not it's a pretty huge letdown, buyer beware, it's up to you but I wish I hadn't left a great job for ExactTarget all to be kicked to the curb a few months later.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote women and minorities to Senior Leadership. Treat people better, be ethical and civil in your dealings. Stop being a corporate bully.

The sad story of the UK branch...

    • Comp & Benefits

I have been working at ExactTarget Marketing Cloud

    Pros

ExactTarget US is a great organisation to work for. The on-boarding process of one week in Indianapolis infuses the new employee with 'Orange' culture. The reality in the UK office is completely different.

    - Initially, you feel proud. After **one month***, your orange-ness disappears...
    - Great learning experience for younger professionals
    - Fast-growing environment
    - One of the leading ESPs in the world
    - Excellent reputation in the US
    - Reliable platform, good product, innovative 'Interactive Marketing Hub'
    - Amazing collaborative environment in the US offices (failed to do the same abroad)
    - Friendly people, very approachable and dedicated

    Cons

The 'Orange' myth of ExactTarget US is dying slowly in the UK. The company has unprecedented growth and its management is poor. Reading the rest of the reviews, I wonder which company they are talking about.

    - Favouritism and Office Politics is a major issue. Mid and Sr Mgt always prefer their mates to play ball.
    - 35% of employee turnover in 2011 in the UK.
    - Good people leave eventually. Amateurism thrives!
    - No resource planning whatsoever, firefighting is always the case.
    - Older colleagues are completely burnt out, victims of sr mgt's experimentations.
    - For really experienced professionals, ET is a major drop in their career.
    - No meaningful feedback about your job performance; no objective assessment. If they like you, you are safe. This is rarely the case.
    - No processes, no methodology, as management is too **scared** to make any decision.
    - Leadership abilities of Sr Mgt are very questionable. Also, their consulting experience is quite limited, marginalising more experienced people.
    - In every healthy environment, there is constructing debating. In ExactTarget, all matters are personal... All the unfortunate colleagues, who dared to highlight even mandane issues, are treated as outcasts. Mgt avoids them!
    - No HR dept in the UK office.
    - Promotion of inexperienced (less than 4 yrs of job experience in Managing Consultant roles) and indecisive people with attitude issues.
    - The art of 'promising the sky with the stars', when rarely anything is materialised. Growth is presented as an opportunity, however it is a major impediment.
    - Experienced colleagues were treated and labelled as 'junior consultants'.
    - The internal knowledge sharing system is massive, yet so badly organised that new employees find it extremely difficult to improve their product knowledge.
    - New employee on-boarding (apart from the week in Indianapolis) is -almost- not existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

An impartial HR dept. is very much needed in the UK office in order to resolve the ongoing issues. The team requires a direct and reliable communication channel with the US' Top Mgt. Employee turnover % says it all. Just listen what people have to say. A common phrase used by the older legion: 'It's such a shame'.
