A shining example of what NOT to do

Smart coworkers
A place where you can learn a lot.
Decent benefits
Lots of left over food from catered lunches for meetings.

ConsAs with any big company, the team you are on can drastically change your experience here but I am going to try to point out some of the general things.

Also of note, before you read too much into the other reviews, take the time to notice how many of the 5 star reviews are can be summed up by "great place to work but has growing pains" or "you get what you put in, slackers need not apply". I will let you draw your own conclusion on why so many of these reviews sound like marketing message ....

It doesnt look like ExactTarget understands that they are no longer a startup. The only people that thrive at ExactTarget are people that have no lives. 50+ hours of work a week is the norm and anyone that does less is considered a "slacker" as you might have seen in some of these other reviews.

If you do the math, you'll realize that the decent paycheck, which is typically higher than the industry norm, ultimately falls woefully short when you look at how much you make an hour.

As you work here, you come to find out that it is very much a cult mindset and you are either in or out.

Job security comes from owning tribal knowledge of projects that are integrated in to the platform since documentation is apparently a running joke.

There are many processes that have been implemented to "streamline" development but apparently the management style here is to implement "solutions" and ignore the results because the only thing that these processes have done is add one more point of failure to an already broken system.

Contractors are treated as second class citizens. Its common knowledge.

The way to get ahead is to brown nose and give up on life outside work.

ET is founded on the principle that the reward for a job well done is an opportunity to do more.

After the Salesforce acquisition morale and productivity have been at an all time low while frustrations and turn over have been on the other side of the scale.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to understand what burn out is. Have middle management be more involved in existing process so they dont just hear about the frustrations other developers face but actually experience them to understand them better.

Going downhill fast. Really hard on us ExactTarget employees.

ProsI like the orange culture although its taken a hit because so many people in my department have left in the past 6 months. They hook you up with new technology every couple of years and I just got a new Dell laptop. Also snacks & drinks in the break room. Occasional Happy Hours with team members.

ConsBeen here a little over 2 years. It is good to see other current ExactTarget employees venting about similar frustrations I am having with its current state of affairs. This year has been very difficult, lots of uncertainty and a lot of turmoil at ExactTarget Indy HQ, so much so I have had many coworkers leave and take other jobs recently. Great teams are being dismantled due to the SalesForce takeover. The people who are still here are having to take on the work of the former employees along with their normal duties which makes for consistent 60+ hour work weeks. The cracks in the merger are really starting to show making for a tense and unfulfilling work environment. Sadly, I use to really love it here, truly heartbreaking to see this happen to a once great company.

HR and management are unbelievably concerned with their public image and I would not doubt if most of these 5 star ratings on here were actually written by them. Lets be real here, no job is 5 stars, every job has its frustrations and downfalls. Anyone rating a corporate company 5 stars is delusional.

I also notice a lot of the jobs that are being hired for currently are jobs people have recently left, which is deceiving because HR recruiters will really try to sell you on ET/SalesForce growth, which is a half-truth. Maintaining is more like it until they see how profitable the merger is, if it doesn’t meet expectations it won’t be pretty.

Advice to Senior ManagementWe all know the sale of the company is your 1st step towards retirement in the Bahamas.

Good place to work but very political in the sales organization.

ProsNice office environment and great benefits.

ConsVery political and management definitely has favorites here which will directly effect your performance or lack of. If you don't suck up to your director then good luck. You will not get the opportunities even with hard work, drive, desire, and perseverance. There are a few good directors in Corporate Sales but one in particular that is an HR nightmare and walks around like they own the place. Definitely shadow more than a few people that work for your director before you accept the offer. You will want to get a good idea of what it is like to work for that individual - make sure you're not going to work for someone that is emotional and makes remarks that will make you uncomfortable. If you are good at sucking up then you will be successful at ET and being Orange.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide training to coach your managers not to make emotional decisions - if an employee is struggling put together a plan instead or a performance improvement plan instead of firing them without warning - especially for employees that have been there for over 5 years. Also, put your directors through an HR class or two. Especially in Corporate Sales - Indy office.

I use to really love my job now I am just nervous about my future with ExactTarget.

ProsUnfortunately, most of the good parts have gone with the acquisition, nothing lasts forever, I guess. There's still free pop and snacks in the break room, for now.

ConsI use to really love my sales job here at ExactTarget but I am afraid to say those days are long gone. This use to be the place the be in Indianapolis for corporate sales but it really isn’t what it use to be, perks have been cut, pay has been cut ever since SalesForce took the reigns. I was hopeful with the acquisition but it hasn't been what I had hoped at all. There's been several people who have been let go from sales and for the first time in nearly 4 years of working here I am nervous about potentially losing my job. It's really sad as a year ago I could have seen being here for a large part of my career but I guess thats tech, ever changing, and volatile. I would be cautious about taking a sales job with ExactTarget right now, they keep hiring but its because people keep leaving for better opportunities, lots of uncertainty going on, the good people are getting out and I will be leaving as soon as I find a new opportunity.

Advice to Senior ManagementI know you think its all about the money but why not try to remember who made you into what you are.

Way overrated--don't believe the hype

ProsThere's free food to be had

Fitness facilities are top notch

ConsThis review is for the Indianapolis office--things may be different in offices overseas or out west.

In my opinion, this place takes institutionalization to new heights--free thinkers will typically not excel here. The "culture" is the biggest downside, as most employees have this fake, forced, condescending extroverted personality to them. You will be ostracized quickly if you do not fit this mold.

Never question the company, as they can do no wrong. Don't speak up and you're fine. Kissing up seems to be prevalent and is a great way to get promoted.

Other colleagues breathe down your neck more than the managers do--it's not a very gossipy place, but people are extremely nosy and will probe into your personal life if you let them. Most employees are vindictive, too--they will not hesitate to throw you under the bus if they feel like they've been wronged in any way.

The work-life balance is horrible. Do not plan on working here if you a family and/or value your free time, because 60-hour weeks are the NORM here, and that's for all positions. No reasonable person would expect to complete the amount of work you are given in 40, 45, or 50 hours.

The company itself seems very fragmented and disorganized. Internal changes are common. Your job responsibilities and performance metrics will change as the wind blows, with no explanation as to why.

There is very little diversity among employees--older, minority (read: black) and female employees are few and far between.

Salary and benefits are abysmal and not competitive at all, given the profile of the company's clients and the niche nature of the email marketing industry.

They sell the company to you quite hard during the interview, but unfortunately, that sale seems to fall well short of expectations in reality.

Sounds attractive to you? Then by all means, apply--they'd love to hear from you. Otherwise, keep looking.

Advice to Senior ManagementEngage employees at ALL levels of the business, not just the top. Get workers exposed to other departments--there is very little interaction among colleagues, even in the same building. I still have no clue with 80 percent of the other employees actually do. Also, with rapid growth comes great challenges--your focus and priorities will shift if you aren't careful. Learn how to scale.

Being Orange is a marketing slogan not the real culture.

Prosgreat food, sodas, parties, swag such as shirts etc. Lots of resources and known by everyone in the space. Mostly young except senior management. Great first job out of college as they provide lots of training and

ConsCult like culture of being orange. They have created a program and system and you are either in or out. Follow the system and smile you will excel but don't speak up. Not uncommon for 25% to leave after the first 6 to 9 months after the dating period wears off. The culture changed a few years ago and now everyone internally believe they are the best and have become ego-manics. Feel like the customers have really been oversold the past two years.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet everything in writing. Lock down the states, companies etc who you will be calling on. Make sure you really like your manager. They are growing so much that there's a good chance he or she may be gone. The newer managers are very processed oriented versus customer or employee oriented. If a customer is unhappy, thats his fault versus finding a solution. Not uncommon for them to offer more stock, more territory etc while they recruit you only to change once you are inside.

Pros- You'll thrive here if:
You think SMALL,
You think about NOW, not tomorrow,
You plan for short-term and,
You kiss-up!

Cons- Disorganised (everywhere): Product don't document changes at all. People move amongst work cells, without leaving sufficient documentation behind. We tried to resolve a trivial client issue; no one in Product knew how to fix it! It's very upsetting when the customer threatens leaving the company, blaming the Services project team! Did anyone actually help? Well, many people **appeared** willing to do so, no one wanted to be involved. Knowledge system? Yeah, there is one and it is a joke!
- No **true** vision in Services: the message from Sr Mgt was: we know what we want YOU to achieve, find out how to do it by yourselves! Shocking... I mean, Indiana University is good, but you can't lead an entire Services organisation with just a single job in ExactTarget. Even rocks know that you play the game (politics), but go on, open a book (preferable Management 101) to learn -AT LEAST- the basics! Sr mgt completely immature with no experience outside ET.
- Bonuses? Promotions? Are you kissing up? If the answer is yes, come on, that's the ideal place for you!
- Diversity: the company claims to embrace diversity. Far from it: any type of diversity, such as gay people, people listening to non mainstream music, family guys, are totally marginalised. There isn't mature management in place to lead as role models. Everyone cares about the numbers. ONLY.
- AUS, UK: not competitive salaries at all
- US: for Indiana, salaries are OK. Just OK.
- Orange Culture: the JOKE. Does anyone really think about this stuff?

Advice to Senior ManagementYou pushed out so many talented people. STOP that. STOP that, NOW! We are here to help, not to undermine your precious seats. Enough with favoritism, enough with promoting all the schmucks! I suppose, competence threatens you, right?
