Best work experience of my life

    Associate Research Scientist (Former Employee)
    South San Francisco, CA

    ProsLots of autonomy and responsibility.
Able to switch departments and learn new skill sets.
Managers are often "in the trenches" with you.
    Collegial atmosphere.

    ConsManagement is becoming multi tiered.
The final decision about promotions are made by upper management who may not even know you.
Too many meetings and some are redundant.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize and reward talent even when a PhD isn't part of the person's background.

    Efficient, goal-oriented company

    Senior Scientist (Former Employee)
    South San Francisco, CA

ProsExcellent management. Smart and hard working people.

ConsSince everyone knows the top priority of the company and department, it is a little frustrated to be assigned to the low priority projects.

    More ups than Downs

    Research Associate I (Current Employee)
    South San Francisco, CA

ProsGreat people and great facilities make it nice to come to work.Feels like manangement cares about employees by providing small perks such as food/snacks/cafeteria.

Managers are typically nice and responsive to employees needs.

ConsLike any other biotech/pharma, company performance is tied to what is in the pipeline, FDA approvals, and how much money the company is bleeding.

Not a bad place to work.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    South San Francisco, CA

ProsThe people are extremely helpful. They are always willing to offer a helping hand, are supportive of your efforts, and offer constructive criticism to help make your work higher quality.

ConsIt can be very busy with some pretty tight deadlines. They have very high expectations of all their employees. As with any company I have worked for, I am cynical of the honesty of upper management.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou can be more open and honest with the employees.

    Internship

    Research Assistant Intern (Former Employee)
    South San Francisco, CA

ProsExelixis is a fabulous place to work with very positive interaction among my project team and senior management's openness to work hand in hand with entry level employees/interns such as myself was a definite plus. Positive work environment made my tenure far more enjoyable.

ConsCertain scenarios arose where senior management and my managers were not on the same page during many projects. Perhaps communication could have been more fluid between the two groups

Advice to Senior ManagementTo sort of rehash what was said above, there wasn't much bad to harp upon during my time there, but the instances of communication lapses (among certain specific divisions) could be better taken care of

    Transformative Period

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsCompany has a drug Cabozantinib in Phase III trials that could potentially be a blockbuster.
People are very friendly and easy to work with.

ConsThis has been a transformative period for the company with massive layoffs, especially in Research. This has lead to low morale.
Could be further layoffs in the future, depending on company priorities.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to recognize the existing employees using the excellence awards to improve employee morale.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
