I worked at Express part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Express was a good place for me to start off my "real-world" job experience out of high school and through college by working with other associates and customers. I learned a lot with how to deal with "customer service" situations.

    Cons

Pay is minimum, and depending on how well you worked determined how many hours you got. They give out regular shifts and "call-in" shifts where you have to call a few hours before your call-in shift to see if they need you to work or not. It's hard to move up in the company unless you're really devoted. Even after moving up however, the pay is still not great.

I have been working at Express part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Came out of the service industry into this job so learned a lot about retail thru Express. Some customers/coworkers were fantastic. Employee discount was decent, but other retail stores have more reasonable discounts for employees. Work-life balance only OK if you don't mind your time being used at the whim of someone else.

    Cons

Underpaid. Underpaid. Underpaid. Pennies above minimum wage. They will demand A LOT & you will not be compensated. Not for selling, not for staying 2 hours after your shift, not for anything. Managers at my store were condescending and for awhile it just felt like a hostile environment. Again, you WILL be underpaid so I do NOT suggest this company, their pay reflects the low value they place on employees. Manager always went outside availability. Terrible company values.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more so GOOD employees will stay. Schedule shifts like you actually care. Stop being so pretentious when you work at a company that pays associates peanuts to sell thousands of dollars of clothing basically FOR YOU and YOUR paycheck, everyday.

I worked at Express full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Awesome fashion; great music; constantly changing. Place to be in the mall.

    Cons

Nothing is ever good enough for upper management. Always cutting payroll but adding tasks. Compensation minimal. Opportunity for advancement if willing to relocate. Only pays minimum wage to associates so nearly impossible to keep competent staff. No work life balance. Used to be a fun place to work but now it's way too serious and stressful. Not forced to wear current clothing but it's an "unspoken expectation". As a manger I used my own money for store meetings (refreshments, etc) and for in store contests.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more, be more flexible with store teams and encourage work life balance.

    Pros

Connect fast with how to improve metrics by reacting quickly to behaviors hour by hour & learn best practices in maximizing schedule impact and payroll control.

    Cons

Excessive turnover, many policies micromanage and restrict resourcefulness

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

An intense environment is conducive to burnout...find ways to increase work/life balance to retain amazing talent and increase loyalty, such as more consistent positive feedback on results but also values, effort, & teamwork.

I have been working at Express part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Express is a very welcoming and friendly company. I've had the best managers I've ever had at any job working at Express. They're willing to help you with any problems you may have, very hands on training and very understanding. They help you grow as a salesperson and push you to be your best. Anytime there has been any issues (which there have been very few) they're very attentive and helpful. I started working for Express while I was in school and with my constantly changing schedule they were very understanding and helped work around my classes without any problems. They want to see you do well so as long as you actually work and do your job they do as much as they can to give you the hours that you need. They are very big on customer experience which means you are able to create relationships with customers in the store and they expect you to go above and beyond for the customer. They want every interaction to be genuine and singular to make each customer feel like they're important and welcome. For associates, this means you just get to talk and have fun with the customers, its a very relaxed environment and a fun place to be.

    Cons

From my experience (and this may just be singular to my location) Express will pay you significantly less than competitors. The store I work for is in the top 100 and in a very busy location, we have extremely high sales goals and a lot of traffic on a regular basis, yet we are not paid as such. They are very open to workers with little to no experience (which is great, I came into work knowing nothing) but for those coming in with experience, the pay isn't so great. We are expected to work as if we are on commission but we don't see much compensation for it.
