I worked at Express part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you are young it is a great place to develop relationships with young people. Friendly environment(sometimes catty). If you have a passion for fashion, it's a good place to start.

    Cons

Lack of hours. Constant change in management. And inconsistent.
Something that really bothered me was that they were extremely pushy around the time we would get our paychecks to spend our paychecks on the product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more opportunities, don't hire managers still stuck in high schools, and please, do make employees feel obligated to spend their paychecks on your product.

I worked at Express full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It's fun at times, but it depends on the store and the co-workers you have.

    Cons

For the most part, the low pay isn't a great thing while on the job and they also have a high employee turnover.

    Pros

Very ethnically diverse of people to work with. if you love fashion/clothing you'll learn to appreciate your job as a sales associate and gain a greater appreciation for the brand/branding. discount is decent. Retail is a challenge, but interacting with demanding customers you gain the skills that enable you to sell anything. Its always a plus to work for a brand that you are a fan of, and the discount definitely comes in handy. easy to get promoted if you work hard…got recommended by CSL for the Fashion Expert/stylist position which I was very happy about and I have followed up waiting to hear more about it (you sometimes have to follow up/remind managers about things of they will forget).

    Cons

for all the work that goes into being a sales associate, pay should be more than minimum wage. after all, sales associates represent the brand more than those behind the scenes ( i.e. managers, stock experts etc…not discrediting all the hard work that they do but we are responsible for carrying the sales through to the register, we directly interact with the customers on the front line )...training for new hires needs to be mandatory and a priority…I've been working for 2 months and only just started learning how to ring the cash wrap…understaffed..also having a college degree I would've expected to be hired full-time , so that I can receive benefits etc. but yet I was only offered part-time…that rubbed me the wrong way, nonetheless I'm very professional and have not missed a day of work yet hoping my performance and behavior won't go unnoticed…also, although I have never called in sick or had to have my shift covered, my coworkers have and it seems like the hardest thing is to get you shift covered…managers are no nonsense when it comes to people being tardy for their shift ( more than 10 minutes)...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement a limit to the number of items allowed to bring in fitting rooms…that would greatly help with LP…because its the sales associates who get thrown under the bus when someone is shoplifting because we "aren't offering them enough assistance" or whatever excuses our CSL's come up with.

    Cons

Low pay, too much work for the lousy pay they give us. Can not use coupons as an employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to pay us a little more for the associates who know how to do everything. ie Floorsets, Shipment,

The Discount, People you work with, music. Clothing.
    The love of Fashion

    Cons

Amount of Product shipped and the wrong product shipped, Super high standards for brand however no hours to keep the store maintained. low wages, long hours, Customers trash the store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow more freedom with Merchandising to allow key pieces that that store's customer would like to purchase. Give more hours for floor-set and keeping the store maintained. Promote within more.

I worked at Express full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You get a decent discount on top of specific sales and its very fast pace. The fashion is great and flexible hours.

    Cons

Depending on management, the work environment will either be dreadful or amazing. Pay is not equal to the amount of work you do. Benefits are only available to full-time employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promoting internal growth is a really great way to retain employees and motivate them. A management team that works united is a team that will make the best working environment. Don't allow your ego / tittle get in the way of someone else's rise to the top.
