A lot of work, but with smart people for decent pay

    Advisor (Current Employee) Fairfax, VA

ProsWorking with smart people is the best benefit. Additionally, the company does not skimp on international cross functional team and traveling to international locations to work with global counterparts is a huge plus. The maternity leave is very generous versus other companies as is the flexibility with unpaid leave and returning part time for a period.

ConsNo control / limited over your career as everything is done in secret and new positions can be foisted on you two days before you start them. Work life balance is scoffed at. Paternal leave is non existent and the gap makes female employees using the program look weaker. Moving from DC area to Houston.

Autonomy is great; very bureaucratic; pay and benefits are excellent

    Attorney (Current Employee) Houston, TX

ProsProfessionals are given freedom to do their jobs without interference; very dynamic pace; exposure to issues you'll not see anywhere else; pay and benefits are excellent

ConsMany in management need to work on their people skills (a good technician isn't necessarily cut out to manage a staff)

Advice to Senior ManagementThin staffing is a frequent challenge

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

No surprises. What you expect is what you get from a large company.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Houston, TX

ProsStability in income. Great benefits. Good group of people to work with, mostly nice people. Risk averse, lot of layers of management makes sure that the project that is eventually done is a project that is worth doing.

ConsLarge company that moves slowly. Lot of layers of management. Few people working and lot of people taking credit for their work. Painful to get projects done.

Advice to Senior ManagementCut the fat in middle management. Senior management has some really good ideas that if implemented would make this company even greater. The ideas eerily resemble what the working class level people want to do and think is great. However, the middle management acts as a shock absorber leaving it difficult for any change to happen.

    Impressive company to work for

Core Process Control Intern (Former Employee) Baytown, TX

ProsThe company offers great pay and benefits. They also have a strong commitment to excellence and safety. A career at ExxonMobil offers the potential for lots of travel and career development. Expect to be challenged intellectually and learn on a daily basis. Also, everyone I have had the pleasure of working with is very outgoing and I didnt work with anyone I didn't like.

ConsThe downside of working at ExxonMobil is they tend to hire overachievers. This can be a good thing, but not when you desire a strong work/life balance.

    Brief but valuable experience

Intern (Former Employee) Baton Rouge, LA

ProsGood experience. Nice people. Good for a resume. Well run company. Solid employee benefits. Overall an enjoyable and valuable experience

ConsTough to manage work and home life although that could be said of any job. Not a very challenging job although this could also be listed as a pro for some people.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work

    Intern (Former Employee) Houston, TX

ProsBest at what they do (arguably)

ConsA true, modern mega-corp (tremendous compartmentalization)

Advice to Senior ManagementThis train has already left the station - no stopping it now.

Exxon Mobil provides good career opportunities but has a rigid corporate structure and is not for everyone.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExxon Mobil employees tend to be very bright and dedicated to their work. You get job security and opportunities for different assignments.

ConsExxon Mobil is a very rigid corporate structure and there's not a lot of room for original thinking. If you do not fit the culture or their idea of a good engineer you will not be happy. Their compensation is average compared to most large companies and below average compared to other oil & gas majors or energy companies.
