Great place to start, getting ahead is about who you know

    Completion Engineer (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsStrong training program, great experience early on

ConsAll about how much your supervisor likes you, if you get stuck with a weak one who will not fight for you your ranking will not go well no matter your performance. Evaluations and raises are very secretive, not really sure why things go the way they do and its all about who you know in the company that gets you ahead. Horrible retention rate at this company of young engineers.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunication is a problem in this company, make sure you reward those who work hard and not just the ones who play the game

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Cashier

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

Prosits basically is a convenience store. You get paid for the hours you put in.

ConsIts tiring and if you have a big family you can't really support them with this income.

    Engineers overworked

    Engineer (Former Employee)
    Torrance, CA

ProsGood benefits, nice facility, structured corporation and policies.

ConsReduction in headcount, freeze in hiring = more work and less pay per hour on average.

Advice to Senior ManagementEngineers keep quitting, do something about it.

Great pay-benefits but horrible annual review

    Property Tax (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsThey have a pension plans and fringe benefits...they also challenge you on a day basis!!

ConsThey compare you to all employees and give you a ranking which is so archaic and not motivating...nobody wants to hate their coworker and ranking against one another is not cool

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the way you manage performance for employees

Great monetary compensation, but lacking in other areas

    Corrosion Engineer (Current Employee)
    Baton Rouge, LA

ProsHigh Salaries, Great coworkers, Very diverse workforce, Excellent retirement benefits, Allows employees to quickly move up the ranks, Very safety oriented environment

ConsPoor hours, Little to no recognition, No transparent ranking system, Employees do not control their own moves within the company, Superficial improvement programs, "Good Old Boy" mentality, Out of date benefits

Advice to Senior ManagementPeople are promoted too quickly and without the proper training to be able to lead efficient teams. This leads to a poor managing system all the way up the chain of command. Additionally, the work hours are not comparable to the rest of the industry leaders. It seems as if the benefits have not been updated for the younger workforce and are still geared to the baby-boomer generation.

Structure is all designed for a life long career although your path is determined very early.

    IT Analyst (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsStable and ability to rotate positions every 3-5 years.

ConsRanking system for raises is very subjective and quick determining career path.

Advice to Senior ManagementBuild structure for a better appraisal system and promotion

Good company but has employee issues.

    Supervisor (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsJob security and benefits. Advancement opportunities.

ConsExxonMobil does not pay competitively with other oil companies. Secretive and political ranking system for employees, at some point in your career you will be last and it can happen more than once.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the rank system and don't compare my salary to an airplane engineer for compensation and then tell me I'm well compensated.

The best of companies the worst of companies

    Senior Research Engineer (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsResearch freedom relatively high compared to other industries & competitors
High caliber colleagues (technically and morally)
    Safest place on earth
    Very stable

ConsRanking process is highly political, not based on performance or impact
Pay is 'just enough to keep you' according to Senior Management
    Employees not valued by management
No good locations (e.g., Houston, Houston, Houston)

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees are human beings. The ranking process is biased and discourages 70% of the workforce and makes them despise what otherwise would be a great company (Note: this comment comes from someone ranked in the top 1/3).

Very stable place to work. Great place to learn and acquire valuable experience.

    Procurement Associate (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsThe best healthcare benefits. Different options to take time off or work part time. Good for working mother with moderate career goals (not for VP to be working moms). College graduate advance pretty fast.

ConsCompany culture is very conservative and arrogant. The environment is extremely competitive. Performance evaluation process is very subjective; ranking can be very unfair if your boss doesn't fight for you. In XOM you can be just a number, it's toooooooo big.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the ranking system.
Copy the best from other companies (Google, Apple, etc.) Need to innovate more
Don't favor High Profile employees only.
