I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good pay & benefits.
    Depending on assignment, good co-workers.

    Cons

Forced ranking process, completely depends on "who you know."
Black-box job assignment process - attempting to apply directly for a position is a no-no.
Management gives lipservice to work/life balance, but only promotes extended seat-warmers. Therefore, high hours = high performance (a strict performance comparison is apparently just too difficult).
"Nanny" safety policies - must hold handrails on stairs, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lose the ranking system. At best, it ensures the best butt-kissers get promoted. At worst, it encourages a short-sighted culture, since prior years are ignored. This is why there are so many projects that look good on paper, but afterwards turn out to be useless, or worse. Even pro-ranking experts seem to agree that it only works for a couple of years.

I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Strong training program, great experience early on

    Cons

All about how much your supervisor likes you, if you get stuck with a weak one who will not fight for you your ranking will not go well no matter your performance. Evaluations and raises are very secretive, not really sure why things go the way they do and its all about who you know in the company that gets you ahead. Horrible retention rate at this company of young engineers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication is a problem in this company, make sure you reward those who work hard and not just the ones who play the game

    Pros

They have a pension plans and fringe benefits...they also challenge you on a day basis!!

    Cons

They compare you to all employees and give you a ranking which is so archaic and not motivating...nobody wants to hate their coworker and ranking against one another is not cool

Current Employee - Corrosion Engineer in Baton Rouge, LA

I have been working at ExxonMobil full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

High Salaries, Great coworkers, Very diverse workforce, Excellent retirement benefits, Allows employees to quickly move up the ranks, Very safety oriented environment

    Cons

Poor hours, Little to no recognition, No transparent ranking system, Employees do not control their own moves within the company, Superficial improvement programs, "Good Old Boy" mentality, Out of date benefits

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People are promoted too quickly and without the proper training to be able to lead efficient teams. This leads to a poor managing system all the way up the chain of command. Additionally, the work hours are not comparable to the rest of the industry leaders. It seems as if the benefits have not been updated for the younger workforce and are still geared to the baby-boomer generation.

Former Employee - Process Engineer in Baytown, TX
Former Employee - Process Engineer in Baytown, TX

I worked at ExxonMobil full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Pay is best in industry typically 10-15% over Hayes study. Very stable company with freebies over meetings like cokes and snacks. Excellent safety record - best in industry.

    Cons

You will have every mistake you made and might have made persecuted endlessly. Don't think for yourself here you will be very disappointed. The most conformist culture and "nice guy" cutthroat backstabbers who "like you" but would never defend you. Do not stand out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You might want to relax a little. Apple beat you in market cap not just because you are commodity and they are niche. There approach with their employees and public is like a normal human being and not a robot. You don't have to put a foot to a guy's throat to get work done. Niceness goes a long way and my god maybe even a compliment once in a while wouldn't hurt. Your company isn't the military so don't pretend it is. The company's success is not due to its environment of strict "tow the line" cog in a wheel but in spite of it.
