I have been working at FAA

    Pros

Very fast paced and exciting place to work, I learned so much about the aviation field. I definitely appreciate the opportunity to be a part of something so special.

    Cons

I felt out of place being the only african american and the only women at my airport. Nothing against the field it self just wasn't for me.

I worked at FAA full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Extensive knowledge gained, amazing income potential, great benefits, and you get to have a rewarding career with great retirement options.

    Cons

You have to get through the academy with at least a 70. There is a lot of information to learn in a short period of time. I don't think the academy should be graded as you will get training on how your facility wants you to operate when you get there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow instructors at the academy to give help to the students who ask for it without repercussion.

I have been working at FAA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits and job security of working for the Government are undeniable. It's a very rewarding profession. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to have this as my career.

    Cons

There is a lot of stress, not a lot of mobility, upper levels of management can be heavy handed. Congress controls the budget so you work with less resources than necessary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop interfering in things you know little to nothing about. The controllers are the stakeholders and know what works and what doesn't. Our involvement has proven to deliver equipment on time and at a reduced cost.

I worked at FAA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

This work is not for the weak at heart. It will demand your best, but it will also welcome everything you offer

    Cons

As with every J O B out there you will encounter negativity, but you make it what you want it to be and be an overcomer

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If the workplace is defined by the people that work there and their leaders are no stronger than the efforts of its team. Then we owe our customers, our families and ourselves OUR BEST!! Let do that before we talk about benefits and perks.

I worked at FAA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excitement, job satisfaction, doing something that gives one a great sense of self worth and good pay and good benefits make it a good job.

    Cons

Top heavy management, getting a new boss every 2-4 years when there are national elections. Controllers often don't make good Supervisors of people. The skills that make someone an excellent controller don't often transfer to the management of human beings. There are some that are great, but the vast majority don't do well at it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn that you are not needed often in day to day operations. You need to learn to back off and trust the people doing the work to do a good job. The best Supervisors are ones that don't have to always be "in charge."
