I have been working at FBI full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

People are wonderful to work with
    Work is interesting definitely unique
    Benefits are wonderful
Experiences are ones you'll never forget
Opportunities for the outside are great with the experience you gain here

    Cons

    Lack of upward mobility
    Too political

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop "rewarding" employees for doing such a great job by keeping them stuck in the same positions forever. Take the time to cultivate new employees to replace the ones that are "invaluable".

I have been working at FBI full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Reputation/status. Many opportunities as far as job function goes. Job security, and above average pay, keep employees on board.

    Cons

The F is for Federal, the B in FBI is for Bureaucracy. And that makes it a difficult atmosphere to accomplish much. You must relocate to promote up. The pay is above average, but the hours are above average.

I worked at FBI full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Prestige of employer; interesting and nationally followed cases

    Cons

Can't recommend working at Headquarters - more camaraderie in the field offices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Professional staff are treated as second-class citizens, little room for advancement if you're not a special agent.

I worked at FBI full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A career here can be absolutely amazing as can the work, camaraderie, and sense of accomplishment. The work can be challenging but is usually very meaningful to someone. Wonderful opportunity to make a difference is the life of at least one person. The compensation is fair when considered as a package.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the qualities listed above can also be highly variable depending on which office you are assigned to. Some offices are more progressive than others. The workforce and culture are not very tolerant of diversity but again, this is variable, depending upon your office of assignment.

Unfortunately, this is a government job and, as such, has been marginalized by many in Congress and the conservative media. If you choose to accept a position such as this you must do it based upon your core values, beliefs, and goals not on the expectation of praise, social gratitude, or validation that may or may not come.

Management tends to treat agents as interchangeable cogs with identical skill, oftentimes without regard to actual skill, strengths, or weaknesses.

The concept of highest and best use is foreign here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your people better and with the respect and gratitude they deserve. The reputation of the Bureau and shear will of the workforce has been carrying it more than leadership.

    Pros

Dedicated people. Great mission. Great benefits.

    Cons

Not a meritocracy. Politics and hierarchy are exhausting. Decision making not pushed down.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let smart people at lower levels make decisions. Promote based on merit, not on tenure. Develop talent.

I have been working at FBI

    Pros

Prestige of working for a great Law Enforcement Agency. The respect given, even today goes a long way. Ability to represent your country and serve is a great feeling.

    Cons

Upward Mobility is greatly diminished with constant budget battles within Government. Job security is no longer guaranteed. Very reactive as opposed to proactive.

    Typical government organization

Current Employee - IT Specialist in Washington, DC

I have been working at FBI

    Pros

    - Great federal government benefits
    - Flexible work hours (though dependent on each Unit)
    - Fair amount of opportunities to move around
    - Very supportive on work/life balance

    Cons

    - Bureaucratic, too much politics, etc.
    - "Old heads" tend to run the show regardless of whether they're competent or not
    - Extremely difficult to affect change for the better
    - Many mid-level and Senior level management seem to make decisions to make themselves look good but such decisions may not be better for the people under them

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward those employees that actually do the work and do it well. Have an open ear about ideas to improve the Unit's and FBI's overall mission and actually make a change. Don't base change on what the "old heads" say because 9 times out of 10 they just don't want change to be made.
