I have been working at FDA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Public health mission underneath it all. In general, people who work there are good, dedicated in my opinion. For those early in career, you'll learn quite a bit and gain broad exposure. For those late in career, stability. Work-life balance is what you make of it. Flexible workplace arrangements, when exercised, are a good option for all.

    Cons

Government bureaucracy can be frustrating. Change is non-existent at times. The negative effects of the political process (e.g. Shutdown) at times can be maddening.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change culture to empower employees. They work for the public, not for you.

    Pros

As a research fellow, the pay rate is OK. Of course higher than being a research assistant at school. Good life-work balance.

    Cons

Such life style may not be what you like ......

I have been working at FDA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very good opportunity for those wanting stability and work-life balance. Many people are drawn to mission focus and are dedicated to their work. If not experienced, the breadth of exposure and training opportunities are generally a plus. People are generally good.

    Cons

Government bureaucracy and typical federal employee stereotypes exist. Career advancement can be slow and you're affected by nonsensical political by products (budgets, shutdowns). Management lacks leadership and increasingly resembles political employees the higher you go up the chain. Risk averse culture of thinking in all ways and inability of system to change for the better.

I have been working at FDA full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work/life balance as long as your group is not under staffed. People are friendly. Good benefits. Great job security.

    Cons

Very political. Things move super slow. The same few are hand-picked for opportunities. Most of the decisions made by management are illogical and reduce efficiency. Bad workers seem to be rewarded/recognized more than great employees. Some managers and team leaders lack adequate knowledge and management skills for their positions. Few opportunities for professional development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward/recognize talented employees. Get rid of horrible workers. Give opportunities to people who deserve them. Allow employees to get better training and professional development. Listen to employee feedback and take them into consideration when making decisions that affect the work that employees do. We actually really know what we're talking about.

I worked at FDA as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Exposure to many different processes and devices. People are very intelligent and hardworking, and care about the work they do.

    Cons

Low pay, although benefits and time off are quite good. Disorganized operations. Culture and experience highly dependent upon which division you are working in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to streamline operations. So many processes are sluggish because everything continues to be done the way it's always been done.
