    Pros

The other operators you work with are very helpful and willing to share their knowledge. The benefits are pretty good.

    Cons

The plant in Midvale, Utah is shut down. Upper management is very hard to work with, they act like the operators are not competent enough to know how to do their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Your greatest asset to the company walks through the doors every day.

    Pros

Fairchild Semiconductor has a fair benefits program along with a good choice of medical health care options. Dental coverage for full-time employees is also an option.

    Cons

Fairchild Semiconductor will start you at a minimum wage and part-time hours. Depending on the supervisor it will be very hard to get any kind of a merit increase.

    Advice to Management

The Management in Utah picks the worst people possible to be the operations supervisors. These individuals have very poor people skills.

    Pros

Casual work environment and good team work mentality. Most people really want to figure out the root cause of our problems and get them fixed. Flexible hours as long as the work gets done. They've been incredibly generous with providing job search coaching to deal with the impending plant closure in Utah. They're pretty good at recognizing talent and making sure it's retained.

    Cons

They seem to be stuck in the cliche that sending jobs overseas is the best way to run a business in America. They are closing down the factory that has their highest gross margins of all the fabs worldwide, it just doesn't make much sense for the longevity of the company.

    Advice to Management

Keep the jobs in the United States. If you do make this realization, I suggest giving all the management training on how to make the most of the employees they have.

    Pros

A bittersweet review of the Pros since ultimately, we will be out of a job next year, but Fairchild has offered many opportunities in the 20+ years I have worked there. They offered very good benefits. They have the best Educational Assistance program I have ever known. They allowed for me to get a degree and other certificates without incurring any debt. They paid for it all and it is something that will help me move forward after I am no longer an employee. Ever since the announcement of the closure, and even before then when the rumors were going around, the site management has encouraged employees to take advantage of the educational assistance and any other opportunities to help us when it's time to move on. The severance package they are offering is fair. They are providing out placement, a job fair, and other support services to help us out. I'll miss the on-site gym which included a variety of classes for a minimum monthly fee. I will miss the great people that work there too. I am definitely leaving there much better off than when I started.

    Cons

I used to have great respect for Mark Thompson. At one time, he wanted to keep manufacturing jobs in the U.S. He made a deal with our then governor, Jon Huntsman, five years ago that our site would provide more high paying jobs in exchange for tax breaks and other business-friendly perks. They even started to convert our site to an 8" facility to keep us competitive. It gave us a false sense of security. Meanwhile, Mark brought in the new COO, and it went downhill fast. They pulled the plug on the 8" conversion, and as soon as the five year agreement time was up, they pulled the plug on the whole site.

    Advice to Management

Not much to say here. Fairchild corporate management has gutted the company of personality and is only focused on what they can get out of it.
