    Pros

Good pay and benefits. All the perks of working for a local government. You can join the union if you choose. Once you're in with the county, you can take advantage of frequent opportunities for lateral and even upward movement (although you will be competing).

    Cons

The Self-Sufficiency division is highly stratified. The higher-ups don't care what front-line workers have to say, and middle management are too concerned with advancing in their careers or retiring early to stand up for the workers. You are just a number. There is some favoritism.

    Pros

High level of creativity and artistic freedom, as well as working within a high-level creative team.

As a government agency, the pay for my position was lower then I had hoped, and due to budgetary restrictions and county cutbacks, the opportunity to become a full time staff member did not materialize.

I have been working at Fairfax County Virginia (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Compared to regional jurisdictions, Fairfax is well-run and fiscally responsible, while still providing good service. We have a lot of resources, despite recent budget shortfalls. There are a lot of really talented people in the county workforce who are in it for the right reasons. Generally speaking, employees are supported and the leadership is considerate of favorable work environments.

    Cons

In some ways, the county has been bypassed by more agile organizations. It is most definitely stuck in a past era of a good ol' boy network and a bygone era of bureaucratic hierarchy. There is a small group of decision makers at the top of the organization who seem to have specific agendas, and the rarefied air of the government center seems remote and very exclusive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The county would do well to take an objective viewpoint of its culture and structure. The quote "by the time an organization thinks of itself as great, the slide towards mediocrity will have already begun" is applicable here. Fairfax can be better, it has all the tools, it just needs the will at the top of the food chain to make changes that can be sustained over the long term.

I worked at Fairfax County Virginia as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Supportive if you have a good supervisor and you are able to move laterally fairly easily. Flexible scheduling available in most departments and you are able to have access to management. Job security is pretty good, but this can be a con as well.

    Cons

Like most government jobs, some of the management have been there forever and are inflexible and afraid of change. Too many jobs go to people known to the hiring manager. Some of the ways things are done are only known by the staff who have been there the longest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Monitor hiring more closely. Write more department procedures down so the knowledge is shared (and does not leave with the employee).

    Cons

The pay could be more competitive but is what's expected from a government position.
