decent place to work

Store Manager (Current Employee)
Ontario, CA

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

Prosdecent salary once you make store manager. Only have to work 48hrs a week. Off on Sundays as a store manager.

Conspay so low for cashiers and asms hard to retain people. Manager required to do most all the work. Only work 48hrs a week, but required to work 6 days. Would be better if we could work our Monday thru Friday 48hrs. Some processes are hard to deal with, such as if you want to transfer in your same position you have to re apply for your position.

Advice to Senior ManagementDoing an overall good job, management seems to care for employees

Could be worse.

Cashier (Current Employee)

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores part-time for more than a year

ProsFriendly coworkers, Low-ish stress, Flexible hours

ConsLow pay (although it is slightly more than minimum), No employee discount, I got a 10$ gift card as a christmas bonus, Lack of employee discount, Unpredictable hours

Advice to Senior ManagementGive some perks that aren't kind of insulting, Give us our schedule a week in advance so we can plan around it.

Overall it's not a bad company, good pay but expect you to work too many hours a week

Store Manager (Current Employee)
Akron, OH

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood pay, good inventory bonus, great job to gain retail management experience

ConsNot enough payroll to operate store on a daily basis, only closed one holiday per year, expect salaried managers to work too many hours per week, have stores in the worst locations possible

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't expect family dollar to be your whole life,be more reasonable when they visit stores

Keeping around your veterans, the leaders of the workforce

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Highland Springs, VA

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

ProsThis was a good start-up company for someone just getting into the world of retail

ConsAlot of the seasoned managers were not paid for their experience and left for new oppertunities

Advice to Senior ManagementMore detailed training for new hires and less hands on prevents alot of store issues. My time there was spent learning more in-depth about retail about the company. But when it came it came to promoting me further a member of my managers family who came in 6 months later came up to my position and i stayed an asm.

The pay frequency is the best but there's a lot more than customer service expected

Cashier (Former Employee)
Mount Oliver, PA

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for less than a year

ProsYou are paid weekly, have busy shifts around governent payday, and have regular customers that you will encounter.

ConsI adition oto customer service you are also expected to be a loss prevention agent, stock person, custodian, and when it comes to the registers and equipment it's difficult to complete a lot of transactions without management. This is mainly because voiding an item that wasn't the last item you scanned is impossible.

Ok

Assistant Manager (Current Employee)
North Myrtle Beach, Horry, SC

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

ProsGood customers, some great employees and friendships made

ConsLow pay, the world's worse workers compensation department, no training, no clear standard operating procedures. A new assistant with no experience started 10 months after me makes $2.50 more an hours and she doesn't do anything the manager tells her to but she has been offered a opportunity to get a promotion because she calls the district manager and kisses butt.

Advice to Senior ManagementOne of my employees ha been with the company for 12years not one raise 7.50 an hour still. Offer raise to employees or incentives. Not stock buying options it takes us 2 days pay to afford one share to line your pockets.
