The longer you stay, the more they try to get rid of you

    Buyer (Former Employee) Charlotte, NC

ProsUsed to be a great company to work for, was there for many years. But that has all changed. No pros now.

ConsWith new senior management came a mandate to evidently "purge" all those with several years of service, presumably to lower costs. Nearly every middle manager and most senior managers who were there prior to 2009 have now been fired or "eliminated." There was a big effort to change the "culture" when all they really wanted to do was eliminate all experience and hire "friends" of new senior managers who had been unemployed and knew little to nothing about this business. The political game is alive and well at Family Dollar. Don't disagree with anyone of a higher rank, or you will be eliminated or made so miserable that you will want to quit.

Advice to Senior ManagementI don't know where to start. At this point, it is pretty much hopeless. You have gotten caught up in implementing "initiatives" and have totally forgotten who your customer is. The processes are never ending and serve no purpose other than to produce a lovely powerpoint presentation to upper management.

    How was your 4th??

Store Manager (Current Employee) Warren, MI

ProsMeeting new people everyday. That is about it!

ConsPayroll... Payroll and more payroll. Give us what we need to run these stores.

Advice to Senior ManagementHow was your 4th?? I know mine was horrible!
I am sick and tired of customers yelling at us Sm's due to slow service.
Yes you lost sales in my store. People walked in and right out as soon as they see a line of people. Customers yelling because they waited to long. We cannot work in these stores like this.
2 people working on a holiday weekend not to mention it being the 1st of the month...it's impossible!!
Than you expect stores to be in tip top shape after doing 8,000 in sales with only 2 people? Again...impossible!
Stores are tore up and no payroll and I'm not staying in my store to midnight to recover because one, again, no payroll. Two, you decide to keep stores open to 10pm and no payroll to maintain these stores.
I am so sick of working under these poor conditions. You have control even with a/c and heat. You all sit in your offices and 75 degrees may feel great when your sitting down at a desk but, when it's 80+ degrees out and we are stocking, we have sweat dripping off our foreheads. We get so hot and sick to our stomachs. Than when it's sub zero we are wearing sweatshirts and jackets because again you have the heat set. This is unfair! We are human beings. I was called white trash today by a customer.. I don't deserve to be talked to like that and I sure in the heck do not get paid enough to deal with that kind of behavior but yet we are suppose to bite our tongues while customers continually bash on us and it's out of our control. We can only staff what you give us in payroll, Which is nothing!!!
We are 1 person but you all want us to be 5 or 6. We cannot do all of this and you expect stores to be 100%.
I'm working an average of 68-70hrs a week. If you work any less your store is failing. Than you divide the hours into our salary, we are working almost at a asm wage.
Open every Holiday now. Offloading trucks on Thanksgiving Day while I'm sure you all are having dinner with your families. As well as Christmas and Easter!
I wish peole would get on board and go union because there is noway on earth you could work us like you do and the sad thing is... You know that and that is why FD is so against it!
I hope you all enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend while we continue to work.

    Slave Labor

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) San Antonio, TX

    ProsThe customers, and some employees

ConsToo much concern with the employees stealing. While stealing a candy bar or soda is bad it was nothing to see customers walk out with bags of stuff and not be stopped. Supposedly the manager on duty went back to review the tape, but one can never be sure. The stores are a mess. Management insists on everything being out on the floor. Not sure what the point of a stock room is. There are so many things wrong it's hard to list everything.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop acting like the employees are thieves. They're not. No wonder you guys are going bankrupt. In all actuality it's such a waste of time. They don't care about anything but themselves. All the reviews in the world won't make them stop. What would is if all the current disgruntled employees quit, no one else applied, and customers stopped coming.

Very stressful job due to no payroll hours to properly operate the store on a daily basis.

    Management (Former Employee) Buffalo, NY

ProsWeekly salary good on one hand and then lousy on the other due to the hours that you work

Conshigh shoplifting issues and the upper management wouldn't help out at all blames the store management

Advice to Senior Managementto properly run a store is you need enough payroll to give to your team members to get all the work done and the store not look like a flea market due to the people that shop there being very disrespectful and just drop merchandise wherever. At no time should team members have to work alone whether you are in the suburbs or in the city. The company is putting everyone's life in jeopardy. The upper management feels it is easier to get rid of someone then try to help out the situation and not sweeping it under the rug. I am very dissatisfied with this company

Store Manager (Former Employee) Tucker, GA

ProsNot Many because the bad outweighed them.

ConsToo many to name. I was very exhausted and humiliated.

This is an honest review for this company, please read.

    Stocking (Former Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsThe co-workers were the only good part and a mere few customers.

ConsThis company deserves to be eliminated, i only worked for 2 and half months and i busted my backside multitasking for peanuts! the place was was pure bullcrap!, right from the beginning i would be looked as a thief while not being trained by anyone. And then nobody even works as a group, In fact, no one obeyed the so called "no cellphone while working" policy, not even the managers. They would leave me on the register by myself while they would stock items and be on their phones at the same time. Even the customers would ask me why there wasn't any more people helping at the front?. i didn't even know what to tell them. The managers are arrogant as hell! they think they always know better and focus on treating you like garbage because that's is the only way the store will perform better or so they assume. So you have to be constantly be looking out for thieves, be treated like a subhuman by the managers, and work with old and slow computing equipment while having a long line full of angry people waiting in front of you. No thank you, i'll pass. I got paid the same at my old job and didn't have to deal with this.

Advice to Senior ManagementThese store managers and stores need to be checked constantly.

My experience with this company was awful!

    Cashier (Former Employee) Clendenin, WV

ProsThere were very few pros. The best pro would have to be I was able to get well above full time hours ? There were only 3 of us that worked there!!

ConsAlso, the cons would be there were only 3 of us working there.. If you needed a day off it was out of the question, unless you wanted wrote up for it.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a better manager.

    Terrible company to work for!!

Store Manager (Former Employee) Fontana, CA

ProsOk for a student to work as an associate to make a little extra money to get by while going to school.

ConsFor management you work with a skeleton crew and the busier store don't get much more if any help then the slower stores. I ran the busiest store in the district and was given only a few more hours then the worst store which did less then half the business and was expected to have store conditions jus as good as the slower store.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet your busier stores have the amount of help that is needed to run a good store don't try and make yourself look like u know how to save so much money as a district manager.

    Feel Like a Caged Animal

    Buyer (Current Employee) Charlotte, NC

ProsThe people that I work with are wonderful.

ConsThe benefits are less than subpar. There is not much upward mobility unless you play into the company politics. Senior managment has poor judgment and sense of direction. Senior management also micromanages every process and every decision made down to how much product is ordered. The work/life balance is so terrible that I have to take a vacation day to work a half day. There is so much work to do that working from home one day a year is looked down upon.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust the people you hire to do their jobs.

Family Dollar is trying to kill their managers

Store Manager (Former Employee) Dallas, TX

Prosdecent pay for managers, good insurance

Cons6 day, 52+ hour work week, only 2 paid holidays. Insufficient payroll to run Your store correctly. Hourly employees can't budget because payroll greatly varies from week to week. Outdated equipment . Too much inventory in stores,.Dangerous environment because of low payroll ( You work alone most of the day in horrible neighborhoods).

Advice to Senior ManagementWould You want Your wives and daughters want to work in one of Your stores? Why do we have to work under the conditions You subject us to? I think everybody at corporate level should have to work at one of the stores for a week under the same conditions we endure! Maybe things would change? Contrary to Your believe we are human beings and deserve some dignity! There is a reason this company is enormous turnover!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
