I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of exposure. Big company that, theoretically, has a lot of opportunity.

    Cons

Ridiculously high work volume and manual process that make everything frustrating. At least in merchandising and supply chain, the majority of the middle managers are in their 20s and early 30s. They know nothing about how to manage effectively and are too arrogant to admit it. Upper management turns over every couple of years because, well, that's how upper management works at big publically-traded companies. Overall, it is pretty much a zoo, but FDO is a good company to have on your resume. Just know that no matter how much lip service the company may give to your "career development" (and they do love to give lip service to "succession"), ultimately you own your career and that will likely include moving to another company within 2-5 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensation, vacation, and work-from-home policies are starting to really lag the competition. Do another one of those completely unclassy rounds of mass layoffs and you'll be sure to be no one's employer of choice.

    Pros

flexible, friendly coworkers, good environment, not a large group of people to work with that is a plus.

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Large, growing company with good people at store level. Opportunity for career growth and advancement. Hourly associates are paid fairly and can maintain work-life balance. Good benefits for full-time associates.

    Cons

Upper management is not in touch with reality in daily store operational challenges. Payroll is rarely adequate to operate store effeciently. No work-life balance if on salary. Many more men at higher management levels.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Honestly, there wasn't anything about this company really that I liked. It was just a job I was offered at the time, and it didn't hurt to take it up.

    Cons

Theft Accusations, Managers played games, Managers stole then tried to blame it on staff, they belittle you, and make you feel like you don't deserve to work there, because they watch your every little move, even if you've done nothing wrong.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better background check on the people you hire, and train your employees properly. When management can get away with theft for a year, then there is a serious lack of communication, and proper management.

Pay roll and their merchandising suck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Cons

Compensation tends to be lower and benefits more expensive. Organizations and systems are not designed to work with each other. Upper management not connected to their day to day and manages in reactive spasms.
