I worked at Family Dollar Stores part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working at Family Dollar had potential to be a decent job, but it wasn't. My location was close to home, and there was no problem getting along with the other employees.

    Cons

When I was hired, I was promised a full time position. I was told I would go for 2 weeks training and then start work at my home store. After 1 week of training, I was placed at my home store and expected to be familiar with all the things that were supposed to happen during the 2 week training. I constantly ran into issues that I had no knowledge of because they had never been mentioned to me whatsoever. I did get paid 40 hours for that 1 week of training, but I never got the mileage pay I was promised for going out of town. Once I was at my home store, I NEVER ONCE WORKED A 40 HOUR WEEK. The average week was 28 to 30 hours, and they claim that is full time. They make you work 4 or 5 hours a day, never a normal 8 hour shift so you are obligated 5 and 6 days a week like you would be with a full time job, but you only get a part time paycheck. There is no managing involved with being an assistant manager. My duties were either opening or closing the store, and the rest of the time I was simply a stock boy. I was supposed to stock hundreds of boxes of merch, even when the shelves were already full. They use an automatic replenishment system to order inventory, and it is terribly flawed. We received WAY MORE stuff than we needed each week. Every single carton must be unloaded by hand, because there is no forklift, and often 1 person had to do it by themselves even when we had 1000 or more boxes coming. The stock room was so full that at times you literally could not walk. Payroll budget is kept at a bare minimum, so you have nobody to help stock the massive amount of merch that you have on hand. They make you fill the shelves so full that the items fall in the floor every time somebody touches them. It's a mess. Also, they won't let you control the heating or air conditioning because they are afraid it will cost too much. They keep it nice and hot in the store all summer long, and customers even complain. The computers and registers are very old and outdated.

    Advice to Management

Please please PLEASE get rid of the automatic inventory replenishment. I does not work. And by the way, if you refuse to allow employees to control the heating and air, you need to turn it off in your office too so you can be miserable like everybody else.

    Pros

No hoity or pretentious buyers here. Everyone is focused on driving margin and sales here. Very collaborative environment, solid company invested and interested in the customer.

    Cons

Lots of uneasiness about dollar tree merger. Some people can be really rigid about processes. Otb process needs more structure.

    Pros

The pay in the office is good. The hours available work, at least for me.

    Cons

The company vibe is not family oriented. My department is awful at knowing what benefits the company versus what benefits themselves. Too much company waste as far as managers who don't know what they are doing.

    Advice to Management

Treat people the way you wanted to be treated and stop talking about people behind their backs.
